Coming into Writing 39B I did not know what to expect of the western genre, but I became eager to learn more about the genre as I was exposed to the films. During the second lecture, I felt as though I knew very little about the concept so I became too shy to discuss the character traits. That later changed when a peer of mine described a cowboy’s physical and metaphorical traits. That provoked a flashbulb memory to occur from when I was a child. I remembered always walking into my mother’s room and seeing her watching old western style, black and white movies that were very comical to me but to her they were very interesting. I would always ask her why she watched such boring, terribly directed movies and she would simply respond, “This is
The lead woman in this movie comes into town with an acting troupe and says that her heaven is "room service" and traveling around the world. This is a typical draw for Easterners to come to the West as it was a wildly different place they did not need to cross an Ocean for. This woman, Josie Marcus, also is seen as "vile" for being with a man for looks but not love. Calamity Jane ran into similar issues with her persona as evidenced by this situation: "Her 'masculine' prowess, symbolized by her aggressive movements, conventional male clothing, and gun were acceptable in the ring, but not 'back stage' (Russel 30)." Even on the men's side where Wyatt Earp is seen as the quintessential frontiersman as stated by Fabian, "note the lean silhouette, eyes closed by the sun yet sharp as a hawk, he's got the look of both predator and prey," there are men who show different traits. Billy is a character who seems to be on the outskirts of society as he calls the Cowboys his friends yet "all they ever do is laugh at him." The reason for this may be revealed through later revelations as he shows homosexual feelings for Fabian. This is shown through his words and tone when speaking about him as well as how he reacts to Fabians death: quickly squeezing the dead hand and running from the Cowboys. Public perception of homosexuality at the time was that it was scientifically reviled. Peter Boag found in his report of this subject that, "precisely at this time so-called experts began to classify unusual sexualities as medical issues. They lumped together under the rubric sexual inversion a host of what they considered 'perversions,' including what later would be separately understood as homosexuality, transsexuality, and hermaphroditism." Together, these themes show great detail into what gender roles were in 1881 Arizona and how strictly they were
I approached my genre writing based on Writing in the Health Sciences guidelines for research papers. Since my chosen paper was a research paper, I looked for the sections in a research paper that included the abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion, and references. This helped me decide what needed to be in each section so I could elaborate on if it was included or was not.
Throughout the novel McCarthy discusses how John Grady Cole’s beloved cowboy culture is slowly dying. John Grady Cole's father says “People don’t feel safe no more, he said. We’re like the Comanches two hundred years ago. We don’t know what’s going to show up here come daylight. We don’t even know what color they’ll be” to tell John Grady Cole about his grandfather's cowboy way of life (pg 60). His Father continues to talk about their beloved cowboy way of life, that is dying because of the industrialization that is making its way to west. With industrialization slowly heading towards the west, the cowboy way of life started to become uncertain just like how the Comanches life was uncertain 2 hundred years previous. The parallelism here shows the reader how the ending of the cowboy culture made John Grady Cole leave Texas and got him in trouble in
The American Civil War is one of the most impactful course of events in American History due to the massive violence, inadequate medical care, and destruction of the southern landscape. The war, which last from 1861-1865, resulted in over 625,000 casualties on the battlefield and a large unknown number of civilian and slave deaths. Due to the horrifying conditions of battle and of grossly understaffed and unequipped field hospitals, many soldiers deserted their positions and attempted to return home; such is the story of a confederate soldier named Inman in the novel Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. The Civil War also massively impacted the nations African-American populations as slaves were now free, however,
With her West Virginia upbringing and living in a coal town, she was inspired to write about “rednecks” in a more positive way. The main way of her doing so was to bring to light the characters of the novel and their loyalty to family, the land and values. The characters are very relatable, the characters manage to wiggle their way into the reader’s heart. It is easy for the reader to become attached characters and to the issues arising in the book. It is in fact a part of our history, native to Appalachia or
“John B McLemore lives in Shittown, Alabama,” Brian Reed quoted. Many people today can relate to some of the problems John faces in S-Town. Most of these problems are derived from southern gothic characteristics within the podcast. The podcast uses many different southern gothic characteristics in order to make it more interesting. Many of the examples of these characteristics are more modern so that they relate to our current society. S-Town is a piece of contemporary Southern Gothic Literature because of its use of social issues, irony, and outsiders.
In the book Everything I Never Told You, there are many different elements and techniques used within the book. The technique that I want to go into more depth on is the use of symbolism. I specifically want to focus on the symbolism in regards to Lydia, Hannah, and Nath’s love of astronauts and space.
In Gordimers story “Once upon a time” uses the genre of a children’s story to articulate monsters in a suburban family by using the theme of a fairytale that clashes with the theme of a childrens story so he can use “monsters” in a suburban family. Gordimer uses phrases that kind of gives him the excuse to go in and articulate the monsters into the genre of a children’s story. Gordimer knew how to put everything in place to make it be called a “children’s story” Also, she the setting of the story in a good neighborhood, just people
The Union enjoyed overall success in the Western Theater in 1862, but the year also brought defeat and setbacks between the times of Grant’s River War and the Battle at Stones River during the Civil War. These events contradicted the Unions success with strategic embarrassments that demonstrated the Union’s youth in military strategy in handling two separate theaters and management of men and goods.
Cowboys and Indians come to mind for many people when the idea of Southwestern literature is presented. The scene of a saloon shootout and John Wayne materialize. Southwestern literature is more than the O.K. Corral. Writers such as Willa Cather and Catherine Porter do not have the prototypical storyline stated above, but they are writers of Southwestern literature. In order to understand why Willa Cather and Catherine Porter should be considered a part of Southwestern literature, one must consider the difference between the American West and Southwest and understand that their writing is deeply influenced by the landscape and culture of the Southwest and centered on issues faced by inhabitants of the region.
The musical film has always held a special place for me. From my time as a drama student in high school, my eyes have been opened to the amazing world of the musical and especially the musical film. The musical film is a film genre in which the characters sing songs that are integrated into the overall story. Since musicals first began in theaters, musical films usually contain similar elements. These elements often simulate that there is a live audience watching. In a sense, the film viewers become the audience members, at a theater production, as the actor performs directly to them. Due to the popularity of musicals in the theater, the style was quickly brought over into film. In 1927, the musical film genre began
The Western genre tended to portray Native Americans stereotypically; males were often shown as barbaric and the antagonist to the masculine Western cowboy. This links back to the savage stereotype, and how Westerners are often shown in a positive and heroic light whereas other ethnicities are demoralized and shown as negative characters. There are a select few stereotypical representations of Native Americans which are highly common in film, for example Native Americans typically speak “with a broken dialect of ‘baby’ English. They are not able to fully understand or express thoughts in the English language” (“The role of Native Americans in film, n.d.). This representation has changed in recent years with the
The film genre of the Western has long since proven to be more about the conflict and showdowns that occur in the storyline. Usually the western genre incorporates traditional western motifs and icons and adheres to those common plot structures of the genre, but Brokeback Mountain is different from what is to be normally expected because it does not seem like a traditional and conventional Western film at all. Brokeback Mountain has several different twists to it, like the more modern take on it – traditionally, characters in Western films were riding horses, but because Brokeback Mountain is a more modern movie, the two characters Jack and Ennis are seen traveling in cars and trucks most of the time. This alteration is very
No matter which type of job or career the author is looking for, a resume is a great first step. Generally, resumes are built and created in early adulthood by the author them self. There are a few things that can be assumed about the authors. First, they are middle to upper class individuals who like to show off their own personal qualifications, education, and academic and professional experiences they have obtained throughout their life. The audience in which will be looking over these resumes could be a pretty broad range generally speaking, but for the most part whoever the author is submitting the resume to will be the intended audience for this genre. I think it is safe to say this genre will be around for many years to come,
The Western film genre is typically set in a secluded village in the middle of the desert, normally in the American West. The setting includes wooden buildings, tumble weed, cacti, trains, horses and carriages. The storyline for western films is usually the same, namely, a hero travels to a remote village, usually on a horse, and brings peace to the warring villagers.
