Personally, I feel the textbook is extremely difficult for our students to understand. The amount of reading and the difficulty of the reading is hard for my students, especially my IEP learners. In order to master this skill I need to remember to use the SQ3R study technique. SQ3R stands for survey, question, read, recite and review. By surveying before I read it gives me an idea of what I am going to be reading about which will prepare my mind for what it is about take in. Asking questions and then answering them as I read will help information stick in my mind. When I read something, I need to remember not to get frustrated because I’m obviously not going to remember everything the first time. It’s okay to have to read things more than once. Also if I recite and review things over and over it will help me retain information as well. The more I use the SQ3R study technique the more comfortable I will become in reading. By doing this routinely it should help me improve my study skills and my academic success.

Critical reading for this class comes easily. Reading the chapter, highlighting certain points and writing notes helps to understand the content. The topics mentioned thus far have all been fairly easy to grasp, especially since they are familiar topics but as time progresses and the reading become more in depth, this strategy will be increasingly more helpful. Critical reading is always a struggle but hopefully this class, with all of the assigned reading, will help teach how to properly read a textbook, fully understanding each and every phrase mentioned. While reading a textbook, it is easy to get distracted and forget everything that was just read, by taking notes and highlighting while reading, it is easier to grasp the information given. Being able to stay focused and be more insightful throughout this class is a definite growing

Taking the SAT math practice tests was an informative experience. First, I followed the link to majortests.com to access the web page of SAT math practice tests. Then I took three practice tests to familiarize myself with the types of questions on the test. Each practice test consisted of ten questions and took approximately twenty minutes to complete. After finishing the third practice test, I was able to recognize the types of problems I found easy and the types of problems I found difficult. Finally, I reviewed the questions I answered incorrectly to identify the specific types of problems I need to learn more about, so I can better prepare for the math section of the SAT.

The majority of the population who hate math originate from the same perspective of the new and future students. So, what goes wrong? Basically, the students are not taught the seemingly simple (or complex) words that mathematicians use in their field of study. The small words in math are just as crucial to learn and understand as the more complex words. So I make a step to seek and think what the main concept is, and I try relating all the ideas of the course so that I can see clearly the overall picture and understand the topics that I learn. I also read the notes and make an effort to understand the lesson that will teach before going to the lecture. This helps me to give the overall idea of new topic that I will learn.
