Taking the SAT math practice tests was an informative experience. First, I followed the link to majortests.com to access the web page of SAT math practice tests. Then I took three practice tests to familiarize myself with the types of questions on the test. Each practice test consisted of ten questions and took approximately twenty minutes to complete. After finishing the third practice test, I was able to recognize the types of problems I found easy and the types of problems I found difficult. Finally, I reviewed the questions I answered incorrectly to identify the specific types of problems I need to learn more about, so I can better prepare for the math section of the SAT. There were numerous types of problems I had difficulty with on the SAT math practice tests and need to learn more about. The most challenging types of questions were the problems …show more content…
One way I plan to learn more about the types of problems is by watching the SAT math practice videos at khanacademy.org. I also plan to watch the videos and complete the exercises for the specific concepts I struggled with, located in the geometry, trigonometry, and algebra sections at Khan Academy. Moreover, I will review the postulates, theorems, and formulas used to answer the numerous types of math questions. Regarding the videos, I plan to watch three to five videos at a time, depending on the length of the videos, and complete the practice exercises on the website that correspond with the videos. I will review the related postulates, theorems, and formulas as I watch the videos and complete the exercises. I intend to accomplish these tasks two to three afternoons a week in the following months until I can solve the questions correctly and quickly. Finally, by taking the practice tests, determining the difficult types of questions, and making a plan to improve, I will better prepare for the
Each week there are several videos to view and websites to read that help me to understand the step by step process of each concept. I find that if I copy the examples in the video into my weekly notes assignment, I can refer back to those often while I take my weekly quizzes. Most of the time there is an example problem that is identical to a quiz question I am struggling with. There have been times that I search a subject for more videos if I am struggling.
To help students prepare well for any test, Gardner, Jewler and Barefoot (2008) offer some useful suggestions, some of which I will highlight herein. To begin with, one should attempt to gather as much
Math for me has always been difficult. I did struggle in middle school, I had both just a math class and an algebra class and I hated both classes. Algebra was what I struggled with the most, a had an F in that class and I don't remember if I ever brought that grade up. In the past, when I struggled on a problem I felt stupid. I didn't understand anything meanwhile, all my classmates were halfway done. If I were struggling on a difficult problem I would usually just give up and ask someone for the answers and I would just copy down their work. I would struggle for about half the class time until I just decided to give up.
and types of questions) will be presented at the start of the class prior to the exam. The
I also now know that I need additional time to devote to this class. Where in other classes, I do not seem to struggle on assignments and clarification. I am a hands-on learner, so with on-line courses it is sometimes difficult to understand what is expected of the assignment, having the rubric helps though.
The test is kind of short, and so I only really got one more question right in the math section than in each of the other sections
Although students may have enough time to prepare for the SAT/ACT, there are many distractions that could prevent the student from getting a good score. The SAT/ACT both require students to answer a load of questions in little time; the student would be more focused on trying to answer all questions rather than getting as many right as they can. One other distraction could be the student’s testing environment. The student may have
“The SAT in recent years has become the main assessment used in some states to measure how much high school students have learned” (Zinshteyn), it is big step into becoming a college a student since the year it was enacted in 1926. The SAT is a standardized test that measures your skills in both math and english, along with your writing, it is mainly taken between junior and senior year of high school and is a major impact on deciding your college admittance depending on your college. A new SAT was enacted recently claiming to level the playing field for all students who deserve and are willing to work hard for en education, “The overall topics have not changed the SAT still quizzes you on math, english and writing. The only difference is that the new SAT combines reading and writing into one section within the SAT”
1. Give you information on what to expect, and how this course is different from other math courses.
Keep in mind that high school students have a lot going on in their minds and something such as the SAT test can really be overwhelming. Students try their best to prepare themselves for months and months and then in the blink of an eye they are sitting down staring at a four hour test, trying to focus because it is so crucial to their future. Well, thoughts like this are what soar through kids minds’ in these moments, It happens oh so often, when kids show up to take their SAT test mentally exhausted because they could not get any sleep the night before. And then despite being exhausted before the test even begins, three hours into the test kids are almost brain dead at that point. But we have to deal with it because being only three hours in means we got a whole other hour of scratching our brains trying to gather ourselves mentally to finish the test. This brings up the question, how can a test that weighs so much on our future be given all in one day over the course of four long hours? Well, that is a good question; the simple answer is it shouldn’t be this way. Students should have the luxury of taking different sections of the tests on different days or at least have more than a five minute break in between every other section. By doing this, student will be able to regain their mental composure and not be totally mush brain by the time they are half way done the
There are 16 states that are required to take the end-year test. The law says that students who don’t take the test and are not ready to pass will most likely struggle through school. If you fail the end-year test you will have to repeat the same grade again. The test determines if you ca move on or not. Students should be required to take the end-year test to move on to the next grade.
Fourth, study throughout the course; do not wait till the last day before the test to sit and cram your notes. In order to follow your course material schedule, you will have to decide approximately how many hours you will need to study for tests. Get a calendar and clearly mark off the hours each week that
In Honors Algebra II, such topics that are covered include equations and inequalities, linear relations and functions, systems of equations and inequalities, polynomials and their functions, conic sections, complex numbers and quadratic functions, parabolas, radical expressions, and rational expressions. In terms of difficulty, according to the PVI grouping, it is a group 4 class, meaning that out of the 1 to 5 scale, it is a class that is very fast-paced, involves a lot of work, and takes a lot to navigate through.
I spent the summer and the majority of the next semester polishing my skills and learning new methods through online classes and an extensive supply of problems. Math constantly gave me something to do, even in the busy frenzy that was Sophomore year. Many times, I frantically rushed through homework, or foolishly procrastinated it in order to spend a few hours holed up in my room on a Saturday with pencils, papers, and practice problems. Though sometimes stressful, I found joy in the long hours spent in my room working difficult problems. The multistep process of problem solving intrigued me; the beauty
The SAT is a standardized test widely used for college and university admissions in the United States. It was first introduced in 1926, and its name and scoring system have changed several times throughout the years. Many students around the world that want to pursue post-secondary institutions in the US make it a point to write the SAT at least once in their high school career to better their chances of getting a higher score. This test has three parts to it – one reading, writing and one math. In order to achieve the best score that they can possibly get and be placed in the highest possible percentile, students may decide to attend SAT preparation classes starting from the early years of High/Middle School. The unfortunate reality of these extra preparation courses is that they are quite expensive, and due to this, they mostly cater towards to higher or higher-middle class families. Courses that provide extra preparation such as Ivy Global are not very affordable to many families and so students. According to many statistics and news reports, the higher the test taker’s family income, the higher their scores in the test. This has been a topic of great controversy as we have grown in the modern society
