A. Throughout the first week of THE 225, many events took place within America that took the country by surprise. Trump’s inauguration was last Friday, January 20th, and already he has made drastic changes that will affect the lives of millions. His policies are based off sexist and racist claims that people have, for some odd reason, supported. With his new, corrupt policies, life in America will soon be set back decades because of his white supremacy mentality. Because of this, the nation has never been so divided since the Civil Rights Movement, something that was seemingly done with but clearly not if white supremacy becomes an issue. Although Trump’s America is not an ideal America and his claim to “Make American Great Again” implies …show more content…
Friday, January 27th, March for Life took place in Washington D.C., a march against abortion, a pro-life march. An issue arises with this pro-life stance because this march tells women they are wrong for getting an abortion, no matter what the reason was for the abortion. The “Pro-Life Generation” wants to make decisions for women rather than women making decisions on their own, taking their rights away from them. Being pro-choice in no way means pro-abortion, it means that women can decide for themselves whether or not they want to keep the baby because it is no one else’s decision to make. There are thousands of kids in foster care waiting to be adopted that will never be adopted because of this movement and that, in no way, is a good life to live yet these “pro-life generation” is simply saying these unborn fetuses and more important and deserve more than the already living child who just wants a …show more content…
Critical reading for this class comes easily. Reading the chapter, highlighting certain points and writing notes helps to understand the content. The topics mentioned thus far have all been fairly easy to grasp, especially since they are familiar topics but as time progresses and the reading become more in depth, this strategy will be increasingly more helpful. Critical reading is always a struggle but hopefully this class, with all of the assigned reading, will help teach how to properly read a textbook, fully understanding each and every phrase mentioned. While reading a textbook, it is easy to get distracted and forget everything that was just read, by taking notes and highlighting while reading, it is easier to grasp the information given. Being able to stay focused and be more insightful throughout this class is a definite growing
Donald Trump before he became the 45th president, his famous campaign motto “Make America Great Again” caught the attention of many Americans, but mostly by white Americans. Trump’s tactics made him a very clever man throughout the election, he had many techniques on how to gain the American vote. Throughout his campaign, he was attentive of the men around him. For example, Trump knew exactly what to say to get the attention of the American people. He already had in mind who he was going to pick in position for foreign policy, national security, and defense (“Donald Trump is the ultimate Machiavellian prince”). With this intention, he brought comfort to Americans, yet the people he was going to pick for these positions all have a common trait, which was all of them are specialist in the Middle East and Russia. Not only, was Trump attentive of America, yet he kept in mind how it was going to affect
In Langston Hughes poem “Let America be America Again” he talks about how America should return to the way that it was perceived to be in the dreams before America was truly America. Throughout the poem he uses various methods to evoke the patriotic images and dreams that he feels America should and will eventually be. Hughes states that America is supposed to be a place of equality for everyone including both white and colored people. During this period in time though there was not equality for everyone. Hughes talks about an America where both whites and colored people will have equality in all aspects socially, politically, and economically. What Hughes is saying is that both whites and colored
As I slowly marched the 2.5 mile walk from the Lincoln Memorial to the Supreme Court in Washington DC, I was astonished to see the mass amount of people marching in unison with me. Chants such as, “Hey Hey! Ho Ho! Roe v. Wade has got to go!” rang through the air, and signs saying, “I am the Pro-Life Generation” were hoisted up into the sky, proudly presented to the crowd. A sense of unity lingered over the multitude of people. Traveling from states such as Hawaii, Alabama, and New York, people met at the nation’s capital, standing together for the fight for a human life. This was the March for Life. The United States is in a constant battle against the Catholic Church and its teachings about human life. Additionally, some Catholics disagree with the Church’s stance on this particular issue. The main cause of this debate revolves around when a human life begins.
Even though these “Pro Life supporters” think giving up your child for adoption is a better choice than an abortion, but those children would be forced to live in an unfit foster home till they age out of the system. After they turn 18 they are out on the streets what makes the women who would rather just have an abortion have to think about when they know their child is in a foster home and probably no better off than where they would be if she would have just kept it? You have to deal with the emotional circumstances after an abortion for a while but you have to deal with not knowing what the child you gave up has to go through on a daily basis everyday of your life is a lot harder than the emotional toll of an abortion
With the inauguration of Donald Trump rapidly approaching, there has been a much needed resurgence of interest in the progressive movement around the country, as well as an awakening to the need of an actual revolution by more moderate liberals. The Republican sweep of all levels of government indicates an all too familiar conservative backlash against the social progress that has been steadily building over the last eight years. Historically, this has ultimately led to the empowerment of emboldened racists and bigots of all ilks, which we are presently seeing.
The Women’s March on January 21, 2017 also stirred the emotions of American citizens, for different reason. The vast response to the March throughout the country left some wondering why such action was needed, when women’s rights have come such a long way from when the US was founded. Those unware of the March’s mission are likely unaware that it was centered around many principles including: ending violence, LQBTQIA rights, worker’s rights, civil rights, disability rights, immigrant rights, environmental justice, and reproductive rights (Women’s March, 2017). The focus on reproductive right’s centered on reproductive freedom and an access to quality reproductive healthcare services, birth control, HIV/AIDS care and prevention, medically accurate sexuality education, and access to safe, legal, affordable abortion (Women’s March,2017). Access to abortion is an issue that varies state to state, similar to the issue of gun regulation.
Trump as the president-elect has divided the country more than it has brought it’s people together. ‘There has always been hate and divisions,’ some would say. While this is true, this kind of prevalence has not been at the forefront of the political, personal, social, etc. sphere in a long while. Headlines are becoming more trigger inducing and there has been an uproar of hate crimes across the nation. While both sides have contributed to the hatefulness, the way that the hate is manifested is more rampant among supporters of Trump. This is seen through the way that the hate crime rate has gone up since November 8th. In more ways than one Trump’s election into office has given these people that have hate in them a pass, of sorts, to act on that hate and victimize others.
The importance of this article is Women's Right are equal to human rights. Donald Trump saying was “Make America Great Again” but my question is what does it mean because nothing was great. For example Women did have rights as a whole while men fought in war boys could be sent to War before puberty. This relates to history for example Susan B. Anthony who fought for women's right. I would just like to finish off is this is history and I stand with all the women who march or would have been there to march.
Written in the first half of the 20th century, “Let America Be America” is a poem that documents and responds to the oppressed state of the United States, in both the past and present. The poem is a plea for a return to the original principles of freedom that our country has seemingly forgotten. Additionally, the speaker sees America as the broken home to oppressed people who have lost sight of the ultimate goal of freedom and happiness. Although America is often perceived as the “land of the free,” Langston Hughes’s poem contradicts this ideology by not only painting a vivid picture of oppression in America but also by providing a desperate hope for the future.
Different ideologies tend to appeal to different demographic characteristics such as gender, class, race, etc. because a person’s background will affect which system of ideas they most closely align with. Liberalism and conservatism, for example, are ideologies that regularly contradict each other, because they appeal to different demographics based upon many factors such as class, race, gender, religion, etc. The general worldview of liberalism is that people have individual rights and liberty, while promoting progress. On the other hand, conservatism places greater importance of keeping tradition and strict regulation of rules. In determining the extent of appeal to different demographics, one must assess the ways in which both ideologies
Many recent protests in modern times support causes and stances against unjust laws in a nonviolent manner. Martin Luther King Jr., known for preaching brotherly love in his civil rights movements, explains how to identify an unjust law, saying how if a “minority had no part in enacting or creating” the law because they didn’t have the right to vote then it is unjust (pg 281). Movements against abortion and for stricter gun laws have been becoming increasingly popular throughout the years. The Pro Life movement addresses their first amendment rights as well as the belief to civilly disobey in their fight for life. The organization believes that the precedent set in Roe v. Wade is unjust and therefore allows the organization to March
President Trump had the ability to capture the votes of whites not only because of his enthusiasm and charisma but also because of his Hitler-related ideals and beliefs about minorities. He constantly demeaned minorities and spoke of them as if they are inferior. His promise to “Make America Great” captured many demographics because it meant to relive what they imagine was a better time. Trump degraded many races, ethnicities, and religions in order to gain political power. For these reasons, it is safe to say that some of Trump’s election was influenced by his tendency to speak using racial
Donald Trump, our 45th president, is a tyrant; who has many fearing for their lives. In his one year of the presidency, he has made an abominable impact on society and the lives of our citizens. Consequently, women and minorities are unaware of where their future stands or if they have a future. In addition, the safety of these targeted individuals is in jeopardy, the government have rejected their rights and silenced their voices. Our president has a negative impact on society and has affected the structure of our lives; specifically, women and minorities because of his racial views and gender discrimination.
To add, the citizens of the US and others around the world have demonstrated that by standing together and taking matters of national security seriously promotes solidarity on issues pertaining to discrimination. Some can argue that President-elect Donald Trump is abusing is ability as president to enact policies and instill executive orders. Ultimately, it's been debated if Trumps ideology steams of Ethnocentrism due to the fact that he views other cultures, groups of people, and religions based on standards of his own culture. Above all, the promises made prior to his win as President-elect are turning out for the worst. Many are beginning to see that the assumptions and "what-ifs" are turning into reality----- real culture. Its known that culture can be divided into an ideal version of itself, as advertised throughout the entire election, although the culture and reputation of the US should be based on how reality is actually portraying itself and the values instilled by our Founding
Donald Trump was elected president of the United States of America on November 8th, 2016, and now has been running our country for over a year. As Trump’s first year in office slowly began, his reputation seems to be creating different outside views of our nation and arguments started producing everywhere. After competing with Hillary Clinton for the presidential term in office, Trump defeated her along with her democratic supporters causing one of the most shocking elections in U.S. history. Using public media web pages, we are reviewing both sides of the argument regarding Trump’s election and we are going to decipher why each arguer supports their side, and why each side is reasonable for the benefit of our country.
