Prompt: In what ways did developments in transportation bring about economic and social change in the United States in the period 1820-1860?

In the 1700s, it would have taken 2 years to navigate round the globe. In the 1930s, it would have taken only 8 days. In the 1990s, an increase in technology and transport have been able to lower this time to only 31 hours. These transport improvements have been able to create a ‘shrinking world, which, in turn, creates a much more interconnected world.

Transportation in the United States has changed dramatically in the past few hundred years, from dirt roads, to canals, to railroads, and back to roads to again. Improvements in transportation between the years 1820 and 1860 allowed for almost all of America to be accessible which caused the US economy to explode. Transportation turned the U.S. into a flourishing economy and caused a large increase in sectionalism, industrialization, and expansion.

One of the first ways that changed New Rochelle was the transportation. Transportation started developing a long time ago, all the way back in the 1600s. Transportation first started with stagecoaches also known as horse-drawn carriages. At the border of Pelham and New Rochelle, there is a sign, famously created by Edward Penfield, showing this way of traveling. This was the only way to travel other than horseback itself. So when in 1811 the British made the first successful railroad it did not take long for Americans to start building the first common railroad the Baltimore and Ohio in 1828. After the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad was built America felt railroad fever and hundreds of railroads were built. The Railroad changed the American economy and culture in just a few years.
