Being raised in two countries, Mexico and the United States, shaped me into the person I am today, a fluent bilingual and independent young woman who enjoys helping others. I’m from a small town in Spain named Chipiona. Chipiona had been always sunny and happy, but every day was the same to me. So when my parents told me we were going to America I was enthusiastic. It seemed like an adventure to me. I still recall the day we left. We spent the whole morning surrounded by our family members. By the afternoon, everyone had said his or her goodbyes and we were on our way to the airport.

I was born in Chihuahua, Chihuahua, Mexico. Although you may assume that I possess a lot of traits of a stereotypical “Latina” I do not. I wasn't raised in a big family. It was just my parents, my younger brother, and me. I was raised by an engineer and an economist both of whom have always encouraged the idea of creativity, curiosity, and innovation. Traveling is big part of my life, and helped shape me at a very early age. Along with traveling came moving to the United States, which made it hard not to reflect on identity and heritage.

Most of my life, I have lived in a small town in the mountains of Oaxaca. Surrounded by beautiful Mexican traditions, and the culture inherited by the Zapotec indigenous people. My parents are originally from this community. But they had to immigrate in order to obtain better living conditions. In this way, I was able to reach the state of Oregon where my sister and I were born but soon after they were forced to return to Mexico.

I was born twenty years ago in Tehran, Iran. My parents and I moved to America when I was about seven years old. Moving to America was an amazing experience, even though it was hard to leave all of our relatives behind.

I would like to start this letter off by thanking you for a wonderful and enlightening summer session! This was the first summer session I have ever taken and I was quite concerned being unfamiliar with taking a class at this time of the year, with such a busy schedule, how it was going to go. I had a great time in your class and can say I enjoy writing more because of your class. Throughout this class I have learned many things. I have learned that writing is not just a boring skill or assignment, but it is an art. In the same way, I learned that as a writer it is important to find a topic you really enjoy writing about, because, it makes the process easier and more enjoyable. In addition, it is important that your writing makes sense not only to you, but also to your audience. I now know how important it is to double check for grammar errors to get your point across, as well as, to help sentences flow together with ease.

When I was seven my family took a three week long trip to Costa Rica, where I was exposed to both latino culture and the Spanish language for the first time. I fell in love with Costa Rica. Everyone was so friendly, local children invited my brother and I to play soccer and chess with them, people would smile at us on the street and ask us where we were from, genuinely interested to meet someone from somewhere different. Later on my family backpacked around Cuba, where once again the latino culture was evident. The beautiful lively and expressive Spanish language paired so well the colourful and welcoming cultures of Central America. During both of these trips I remember wishing I could speak the language in order to have more meaningful conversations and encounters, but in truth it felt like more trouble than it was worth.

I plan to earn a major in Biological Systems Engineering accompanied by a double minor in Green Engineering and Arabic. My curiosity and dedication to my learning has driven me to pursue these fields. In my time at Virginia Tech I hope to complete a study abroad program in an Arabic speaking country. A scholarship
