The Synthesis Essay
This assignment was somewhat challenging for me, however I felt as though this type of essay was the easiest for me to write because all of the information was right in front of me. These types of essays require you to synthesis sources and then write an essay about them. This means that the writer must look at a certain number of sources and determine the relationships that they have with the prompt and with each other. After they do this they must write a well-developed essay about those relationships. Some of my strengths in terms of the synthesis essay include being able to quickly read through the sources, determine the main points of my essay based on the sources, and being able incorporate the sources into my writing
For years adults have been questioning whether or not college is worth its cost. Over time the price for college has increased drastically and the potential income of a college graduate is barely following that trend. As colleges become more wealthy and powerful, they’re too pricy for someone to afford without help and debt.
When we synthesize, we are trying to put together material from two or more sources to help us to develop new outlook or to emphasize a new context to help us to determine what we are trying to say. Our mission as a writer is to gather as much information as we can on our topic then gather all the information that is going to help us to support what we are writing about (The Norton Field Guide to Writing). “When you synthesize, you group similar bits of information together, looking for patterns or themes or trends and trying to identify the key points” (457) Enclosed are some guidelines for doing so: (The Norton Field Guide to Writing) Read all the sources with an open mind. Take notes and write a brief summary. Pay attention to your first
With eyes closed I stand alone, in the dark I smell the sweet scent of fresh-cut grass and feel the soft dirt under my feet. I feel the sunshine on my skin, though I cannot see it. I stand in this blissful moment until I hear a call. Desperation and panic fill the air as I blindly run towards the unknown voice. “HELP ME!” it shouts. I stumble over a log; I can feel the blood trickle down my leg. “HELP ME” another voice shouts. Gradually more and more voices call out for help tugging at my heart. I try to bury myself in my hands and collapse into the soft earth. I jump back in surprise as a cold hand gently traces my face. Tears spill out of my eyes allowing them to open; I look up and see a woman. She wears all black and has a veil over her
Many people have various valuable items that they cherish, some only have a few but everyone has that one thing that hey hold close to their heart over everything. My one item happens to be a necklace that my papa got me for Christmas right after he was diagnosed with liver cancer. This necklace means so much to me because of the character behind it, the many feelings it gives me and the heartfelt memories behind this one simple gift.
In the first synthesis essay, examination of worldview was identified as one of the most important concepts necessary to understand and interpret medical anthropology. Worldview is the reason that there are many different types of medical systems. As explained in lecture, these include diagnosis, healing, and some form of payment to the healer. The study of these different medical systems falls under the term ethnomedicine. Singer describes ethnomedicine as the idea that all medical systems develop from “particular sociocultural systems regardless of the scale of the society.” For example our US healthcare system, based on western worldview, is a hierarchy of administrators who tell the doctors what they can and cannot do. Our devotion to the US healthcare system stems from our need to label the symptom or disease such as nasal drip and a cough can be labeled as a common cold. The worldview seen here is the need for immediate cures to avoid interrupting our busy lives. On the other hand, in “Touching the Timeless” with Billy Yellow from the Navajo tribe, there are many steps to prepare for his healing ritual such as the sweat hogan, where purification rituals are performed, in this case, before a strong spiritual ritual can be done. Thus understanding the worldview that comes with the development of medical systems is vital to understanding why the practices are being used and being able to compare these medical systems cross culturally.
How to best prepare for a Calculus/Physics test? Many college professors would recommend students to practice a variety of challenging problems. However, those problems often require students to use logical thinking and be able to apply multiple concepts to solve, and each can take from a couple minutes to an hour. Not many students can dedicate all of their time to one course, especially if they have other courses’ assignments as well. One good thing, at Everett Community College, students can get help with homework and prepare for their test in the Annex tutoring center, a center that is specifically for advanced Mathematics and Physics. If there’s one thing that prevents students from getting the maximum benefits from the center is that
College tuition costs thousands of dollars, but is it worth the cost? Recent college graduates have been facing unemployment. The high rate of unemployment has people wondering if the benefits truly outweigh the exorbitant costs. Some people believe through not attending college you can save money and still be successful in life, but the benefits of attending college such as respect, higher wages, and better jobs clearly outweigh the high price.
Writing a synthesis essay is not easily. It is different than the previous essay I had written because the synthetic article requires me to have more experience in my life, and I have the flexibility to view. As the source of Baca, Rodriguez, Fatima, and the film Quinceanera, they have shown a lot of their experiences, especially the experiences of immigrants. Through this article gave me a lot of experience in life, I was seeing myself in the past even though they and I have different the language, culture, family, and knowledge. Besides, I also learned how to write a synthesis essay. When I reread the stories and picked the relevant issues, it helped me to understand the psychological, circumstances of writers and characters in their stories.
The economy does not have free community college. They have made it about increasing the level of debt. Many people have introduced free community college. This would affect a lot of people on our economy. This would also decrease personal freedoms for a lot of the public, reduce quality, and send the wrong message to students.
My research on free community college has brought me to your article in the Los Angeles Times “Why Obama's plan for tuition-free community colleges is a good idea” in which you describe how free community college would benefit this nation and exemplify national principals. Your opinion is similar to that of the President, and the democratic presidential candidates. What differentiated you from the others with your stance is your genuine belief in you argument. You were not trying to sell us the plan like the President was, but you were stating what your truly thought was the best for America. The article was written in a very timely manner as America is searching for ways to revitalize our economy and educational system. As you may know, I
Coach Dean Smith was head coach of the University of North Carolina (UNC) men’s basketball team for 36 years, from 1961 to 1997. He tallied 879 wins during his tenure at UNC, with his teams appearing in 11 Final Fours and winning two National Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships. He also coached the 1976 United States men’s basketball team to an Olympic gold medal. Coach Smith led and mentored many future National Basketball Association (NBA) legends such as James Worthy, Sam Perkins, Vince Carter, Jerry Stackhouse and Michael Jordan, to name a few. His successful basketball strategies and game innovations no doubt contributed to his wins on the court, but as important to his sustained team success was his methodical approach to team building and genuine care for his players as individuals. Dean Smith was both a visionary and ethical leader. This essay will detail how Coach Smith was a visionary leader that fostered an inclusive environment and used transformational leadership, with a focus on individual consideration, to methodically mold his teams. Additionally, the essay will show how Coach Smith was an ethical leader as he avoided falling into the ethical trap of worry over image and used the essential intellectual trait of intellectual perseverance in confronting the ethical
Every year, college tuitions are increasing drastically. The thought of college goes through the minds of students if it’s genuinely worth paying for. College is worth the cost because it benefits the society with well-educated people socially and it gives financial stability economically.
When students reach their junior and senior years of high school, they are faced with pressure from teachers, counselors, and parents to choose and apply to colleges. Instead of succumbing to the pressure, some students choose to pursue careers with no degree necessary or careers in the military. Other students are still left contemplating whether or not college is worth the financial strain. When other factors such as future career earnings, personal growth, and potential friendships and relationships are considered, it becomes clear that college truly is worth the cost.
The use of language is a crucial role in debates. If used correctly, language can effectively boost an author’s argument and swoon the audience into joining their side. This debate on whether college education should be free or not perfectly shows this. When Sarah first argues that college education should be free, she appeals to the general audience.
In the synthesis essay prompt there are a multitude of different sources. With three sources supporting mission trips and four against, photos, charts, articles from blogs, and satire, the student has many choices to write the essay with.
