English 111 Reflection

I also now know that I need additional time to devote to this class. Where in other classes, I do not seem to struggle on assignments and clarification. I am a hands-on learner, so with on-line courses it is sometimes difficult to understand what is expected of the assignment, having the rubric helps though.

On assignment 4 I did not really excel on the paper at all. There were many mistakes that could have been simply corrected if I had went back over and reread my assignment. For my research paper I received a grade of 79 and on the AP scale it was a 6 paper. I am sort of proud of myself of getting a 6 because it demonstrates my progress and growth with writing papers on an AP academic level. If I were to be brutally honest I never quite was outstanding at writing research papers, I have always had difficulties writing them. Some of the reasons being having trouble citing sources, and having trouble expressing my argument. Ideally, I was aiming for a 7 for this paper, but unfortunately I messed up the bibliography and botched the CEWEW sets for

I intend on acing English 1102 online. Prior to this course, I was home schooled for three and a half years, and many of my classes were online. One of the online programs I used was Florida Virtual. Additionally, I have completed three online college courses—including English 1101. Because I have engaged in online schooling, I have established the skills necessary to devote myself not only to a physical classroom, but also to online environment. In the beginning, being self-motivated was difficult. I transitioned from a public middle school to a self-disciplined online program. My senior year AP English teacher is well known throughout the school for being the hardest grading teacher there is. An argumentative research paper comprises a significant part of our grade. Although he assigned us the research paper at the beginning of the year, most people procrastinated until it was due in two weeks. I along with handful of people had finished and turned it in two weeks before the due date. My teacher quickly reviewed my essay and said to the class that I had written a good paper. This prompted a wake-up call for the whole entire class. Word spread, and I found myself surrounded by many people who desperately needed my help.

As the Fall 2017 term comes to end, I look back on what I have accomplished in this class. English 102 – Composition II was one of the most challenging and toughest class I have taken at UW-Stout, but feel as though it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even before the semester started the feeling of anxiety had taken over, as writing has never been my strongest skill, but stayed positive and confident I would be successful. Much to my surprise, my instructor, Michael Critchfield quickly addressed that this class would not be easy and amazingly changed my views of writing throughout the entire semester.

I thought, “There are not that many papers. This should be my easiest English class so far!” and I happily put all of the due dates into my agenda. There was a time close to the end of the first week where I realized how hard this class might actually be. A few hours before I needed to be at work I submitted my rough draft paper early. Every ten minutes I was checking my submission on the discussion board to make sure that I could make any changes that needed to be done before the due date that night. Overall, I enjoyed English 331 this semester. This class has helped me become a better writer and speaker. I have improved on my writing techniques, as well as word choice and grammar.

Throughout the course of English 16, I have improved my writing. The worksheets and notes provided helps me become a better writer than I was when I first stepped into the classroom. Revising my paper after the second draft or ‘final copy’ helped me better under the process and time that must be in to make a perfect paper. In the course, there were four assignments, a research paper, a research proposal, diagnostic essay and a essay about appearance.

From the first assignment to the last, I realized that my writing process has changed a lot. I usually write my papers in my room, whether on a desk or on my bed. I did not organize my thoughts as eloquently as I should have. My ideas were more sporadic, and I did not give myself as much time to write it out. In addition, I was more worried about the page limit rather than the content of my work. Similar to the other assignments, I did not start my process with an outline. I went straight towards writing my paper without giving any structure, which did not help with the organization of my papers in this class.

It took me a couple of days to decide what book to choose. When I finally chose and was ready to start my paper, I wasn't really sure what I was supposed to do. I think that I have a good idea of what to do, however, I wasn't positive. I wrote my paper even though I wasn't sure that I was doing it right. By the time I had even thought to contact my professor it was the night it was due. I had already wrote and proofread the assignment, however, I didn't feel that I was doing it right. Panic began to rise in my chest as j realized that I had to pass this assignment if I wanted a chance of passing the class. I had to turn it in now because the time was just after eleven forty. I clicked submit not even aware that I didn't feel the need to make sure it was the right assignment. I was really nervous to get the results back. I had to pass. When I got the email that it was graded I hesitated. When I worked up the courage to read the feedback. I felt a grin make its way onto my face. I had passed this assignment with flying

Throughout this past semester, I came to enjoy visualizing my ideas and transferring them into writing through finding the meaning behind images. In English 1102, I was able to create topics and techniques that I had interest in. I discovered that I like to use visual details and imagery as evidence to make my arguments. If I consider the time frame along with visual details, I can push my arguments further to make predictions and deeper analyses of the character’s life. Combining visual art and time has been an inspiration for my work this year, not only in English 1102, but in my personal projects as well.

English Composition is a college accredited course offered to all students, typically most are seniors. As the only junior that would be taking English Composition I felt compelled to prove my worth of being capable of handling the course. Since the goal of the class is to introduce students to college writing the final was a research paper worth 20% of our grade. The subject I choose to write about was whether or not learning in front of a screen can replace the human face or not. After submitting this paper I felt like I had undoubtedly put my best foot forward and completed the assignment to the best of my ability. As a result, not only received an A on the paper, but I had successfully showed that I was capable of higher

But as the semester went on, I started feeling lost. I thought I knew what the teacher was saying. I participated in the class and took notes, but I began to feel numb. I did not know what I was doing. I had lost my confidence and the thought haunted me. The first draft deadline came and went. I freaked out because I thought I would lose points for not turning in my first draft in on time. I frantically emailed my professor because he never really mentioned deadlines in class and I was worried that I had missed something. He emailed back: “Do not worry about the essay being late. There's no grade penalty. On Blackboard, all first draft deadlines are listed on the Class Schedule. The assignments themselves also have the deadlines listed.” I checked the deadlines online and I was so relieved. I only had to turn in the final essays at the end of the semester. This was perfect for me because by the end of the semester I felt I would be ready to sit down and write the essays. As time went by, I tried sitting down a couple times to start my essays. There were four due, I knew that I did not want to be a week out from turning them in and be panicking to finish them. As I stared at my computer screen, I just could not find the right words. Everything seemed wrong. I felt I had no idea what I was supposed to be doing and I just could not handle not doing the assignment right the first time. I knew I had time, so I avoided doing them. I took me a few hours to finish the project and I wrote alot of the project in the first draft. I visited Mill Avenue the place of my profile several times to collect data and anaylze the surronding so that I would be able to descibe it properly. The assignments we had in the build up to submitting the final draft helped alot as well and helped me understand the importance of having a writing process as it gave me a clear idea about what I was writing and how to write it. We also had to find credible secondary sources and not the first link we would find on google. I had to read various articles and then decide which would fit the criteria of the place I was writing about. I did not know how to properly cite my sources so I used the website the professor sugessted and gained a rough idea about how I should cite my sources. I reccieved reviews of my rough draft from my peers and my prfoessor who said they understood the place I was trying to describe but it needed work as it was not as strong an explaniation as it could be. I had also not added a picture to my essay and that was something I added to give a better image of the place I was trying to describe. Before submitting the final draft I would write a paragraph almost every day and save these as new drafts. In the end I got feedback from a few of my friends and asked them which paragraphs they felt were a good description of the place I was trying to descibe. I feel that this paper was a good learning experience as I learned where my shortcomings are while writing this paper but I did not fully implement them in this paper and that is something I will be doing in Project 2. This paper was a good learning experience and I felt that my final draft was a good representaion of my work but in project 2 I will try and make sure that it is a representaion of my best
