Growing Through Reading “The more that you read, the more things you will know, the more that you learn the more places you’ll go,” says the famous author Dr. Seuss. In today’s culture though, many children spend great amounts of time staring at their personal devices or watching television. Children do not realize that reading provides a form of entertainment that proves not only educational but fun, too. Providing an exciting way to learn, books offer better entertainment than a movie, since books last longer than a movie because reading takes longer, as a result of this, they give more detail. Also, books grow the reader’s imagination because they allow the reader to envision the setting themselves. Whether through fairy tales, historical …show more content…
The reader must use his imagination to create the characters and the setting in his mind. Movies do not allow the viewer to enhance their imagination because the movie scenes only show the characters and setting through the director’s eyes. Everyone’s mind differ than another and each person imagines things differently than another might. By reading books, people can stretch their own unique imagination. Additionally, movies may not portray the characters or setting in the way that the reader imagined it. When watching a movie, often the movie shows a scene differently than the reader thought and can ruin the book for the reader. For example, when I read J.R.R Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings, I had imagined the forest of Lothlorien as beautiful Elven buildings in a wonderful forest, but when I watched the movies, Lothlorien was large Elven houses built in the trees. As a result of watching the movies, my way of thinking of Lothlorien is ruined. Even though movies visually appeal to people, with the CG characters and special effects, they do not let you think about the characters and setting for yourself. Watching a movie do not let the viewer stretch his imagination and challenge himself. Books allow the reader to imagine the setting and characters for themselves with no input from …show more content…
Reading a book outranks watching a movie because books develop the imagination, they provide more backstory than a movie could and they last longer than a movie. Books engage the reader more than a movie, letting the reader think for themselves. A book provides more information to the story than a movie could, and the entertainment of a book last for days while a movie only last for a few hours. When I was younger, I did to not enjoy reading, but then I found genres that appealed more to me, and now I continue to devour books. When I read, I love “becoming” another person if only for a little while. Through reading, I have grown not only in spelling and vocabulary, but also in my own writing as well. Illiteracy remains a common in the world and, in the U.S many have the privilege to learn to read, but they waste that ability on simply watching television or staring at phone screens or other devices. God has given us the ability to read and write, so we should spend more time using that gift and appreciating the wonderful world of
What draws people into reading a book or watching a movie? Although they have many differences, there are similarities that cannot be overlooked. The science fiction book titled Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card was adapted into a movie that received mixed reviews concerning the justification of the book. Ender Wiggins, a genius, and a nobody on Earth, was the project of higher-ups in the world government. He was to be the next Commander of the Fleet that would destroy the Formic species in the Third Invasion. First, the character development in the movie had big differences to the book although the big picture was hardly altered. Next, the plot of the movie was altered from the book in a way that would grab an audience's attention in theater,
During his time in the war, Dr. Seuss learned so many things, uncovered so many talents, that he didn’t really know how and when to use them. He tried several different career options before he finally settled: he wrote articles for Life magazine, monthly children’s story for Redbook, submitted advertising concepts for Ford Motors, created film strips, drew political cartoons for The New Republic, lectured on children’s literature and produce animated cartoons.
Through over forty-two books Dr. Seuss has been able to encourage children to seek delight in reading and has opened the minds of successive
"Seuss..!!. Seuss...!!" I heard the familiar voice calling my name. I squirmed my eyes and again my name yelled "Seuss..!! Dinner is ready!!"
Reading a book and watching a movie is different because when you read a book you can use the world of imagination. You get to make up the characters voices, imagine what they look like, and read at the pace you want to read in.
Books give you the opportunity to let your mind make up the pictures about the story, based on how you want. It allows your mind to think outside the box and use your imagination. In a movie or show, the television shows the picture for you, without having to think or question why it is that way. Books also give the reader more details and information about the story, while movies just show it the way they think it should be. Lots of people claim that when you read a book and watch a movie over the same topic, the movie is always better. In that case, you should open a book and dive into your own
It is seven forty-five. There are still a few precious minutes until bedtime. My younger sister and I have already dressed for bed, but our plot is to drag out every second we have left before eight o’clock. Only one thing remains for us to do to accomplish our mission: read. We beg our parents to read to us, and they, as predicted, agree. The two of us sprint to our shared bedroom in order to stare at the bookshelf. Two toddlers find it difficult to the correct book. We must choose a book that both of us will enjoy, we must choose a book on a shelf that one of us can actually reach, but most importantly, we must choose a lengthy book. So we, of course, choose the longest two books we can reach. I snatch a treasury of children’s stories, and my sister selects a treasury of Dora the Explorer stories. Never had we read either one of these in one sitting, but we regularly tried to push the boundaries just a bit farther.
The work of Dr. Seuss is a vast collection of critiques, whimsical thinking, and savvy life learning lessons for both children and adults. This paper considers how influenced the narrative and storytelling throughout Theodor’s vast career. First in his childhood, Sundays in the zoo with his father where animals had too many knuckles. In the same fashion later on, his sketches in Dartmouth College’s rag the Jack’o ‘Lantern. Throughout his career Dr. Seuss wrote about topics close to his heart and experiences that shaped his life and perspective from his youth in Springfield Massachusetts. Likewise these connections of Seuss’s , political position run through much of his public work seen in illustrations published in PM Magazine Vanity Fair and Life Magazine later in his profession. Analyzing his political position on such issues like Hitler, Stalin and the Japanese around WW2 in his first half of advertisement and production occupation.
Reading was the new outlet for my imagination and the stories I read fascinated me. They weren’t too unlike the scripts of computer games or the own stories I came up with on my own, but books actually had the action and emotional aspects written out. And again, while my peers were reading things about growing up, things that had morals and would teach valuable lessons (I remember one book about a shoplifter who had to do community service at an animal shelter), I read real fiction: Jurassic Park, Dragonriders of Pern, Lord of the Rings… Stuff of fantasy and science-fiction that let my mind stray from reality. Stuff that kept my imagination alive while I was being forced to learn multiplication and the names of countries. Of course, my teachers encouraged me to keep reading, as long as I wasn’t doing the reading in the middle of their lectures. But it wasn’t because of their influence, however, that kept me interested in books. It was because I loved it. It put pictures into my head and made me think. So I kept reading. But even then I knew reading wasn’t enough… Yes, the stories were fascinating, but they weren’t what I wanted. Back then I wasn’t sure what I wanted, but as middle school came to a close, I found it.
In the world of modern technology there are many ways to keep one entertained and informed. Two of the best ways are through the reading of books, and the watching of movies: both are eternal works of art designed for those who would wish to momentarily leave the existent of reality and dive into a world unknown or to question the known world through stories of factual relevance. Both take the entertained on a journey that has been created in the minds of a genius, but, it is the way they take the entertained into their imagery worlds that are different. Books, for example require the reader to use there imagination to mentally visualize the image the author is trying to perceive. Movies, on the other hand, will have the audience mesmerized as the picture comes to life right before their eyes. Both books and movies are great evening actives
These people enjoy the relaxation and the plot that the actors and actresses create. Some even get a kick out of the theatrics. Others, like myself, also enjoy sitting on that couch, but instead we prefer to hold a book in our hands and let our imaginations escape reality. True book lovers enter an entirely different world and become whichever character they desire. Whether you prefer the book or movie, it is entirely up to you.
Personally I find books to be better. Going back to what I said earlier about opening your mind, that's how it works for books and movies, When you’re watching the movie. You see through the story, you see what happens, you see the characters, you see everything left to right. While reading a book on the other hand. You visualize the story, you picture what happens, you picture how the characters look. For example let's take the movie and book “A Monster Calls”. A movie most grade 8’s have gone on a trip to watch, and you can definitely notice the mixed feelings about whether the book or movie is
Raymond Mar, a psychologist at Your University in Canada and Keith Oatley a professor An The University of Toronto, they both say that “individuals who often read fiction appear to be better able to understand other people, empathies with them and view the world from their perspectives.” I agree that reading certain types of books can help people further understand and see things from a different point of view. Reading helps to open people's eyes and to teach life lessons or to show there are other things to believe in and know other than what they have always been told to know. Getting different types of books, types that are not always the same as the books that you normally read can help you to view things differently. For example from personal experience a new book can help your imagination grow, readings helps me a lot when I need to come up with new ideas for an art class. The new places a book takes you the new images you see while you are reading the new stores you hear and the happy ending your book might have can change the way you are feeling it can brighten up your day.
When a person reads a book they are entranced in the plot line. They have to comprehend and understand in order to finish the book and have it make sense. Movies can just be idly watched without gaining attention or intellect. Due to this, movies do not leave an impression.
Reading develops a person’s creativity. Unlike movies where everything is determined by the producer, writer and director, books allow students to create in their minds how a particular character looks like or imagine how a scene plays out.
