1) What are 5 key points made by the speaker? Write a short paragraph for each one The first key point that the author made is that there is a lot of people in the world that are non-informed about what was going on in the world. He says that people tends to think that things are becoming worst or didn’t change which is not true. He said that there is a need to communicate because the data of what happening in the world is well aware. He compares the life expectancy and fertility rate of many countries since 1960. He found out that they is a lot of countries that have improved in term of life expectancy. As example China and India has improved and are moving toward better health care and small families like develop countries. He also compared the income distribution in the world and found out that there wasn’t a gap between rich and poor anymore and that there were a lot of countries that were in the middle and had 24% of the income. Looking at the graph, the actual distribution was mounded shaped while it used to be a bump. He shows that it is dangerous to use average data because there is a lot of differences between countries and that policy makers have to take that into consideration while designing the laws for one region. He thinks that data should be used more often and that organization should be will willing to release these information’s and make it available to the rest of the world. 2) Read the power point posted on Canvas entitled "Politics in the developing
The short story “Speech Sounds” is a science fiction story written by Octavia Butler. This essay portrays a central theme that really opened my eyes as well as many others. This theme is to never take your ability to communicate for granted. Communication is a huge part of our culture and civilization. I never truly realized how important communication really was until reading this story. Without it, we cannot express our feelings in a correct manner. Not being able to connect with other individuals results in it being very hard to cooperate with others, causing chaos amongst society. In a short amount of time, the world would turn on each other causing mass amounts of violence. Likewise, this is similar to the story “Speech Sounds.” There are many takeaways one can have after reading this story.
In the video with Jake Porway, he discusses the amount of big data that is available to the population, which is an advantage to everyone. He also discusses how another advantage besides assisting people pick a movies or a restaurant, is how social organizations can use this data to analyze particular occurrences and bring about change for the greater society (Porway, 2012). However, there are some disadvantages to big data. The data can be difficult to assess for those not experienced with using it, and it can be very expensive to hire someone to analyze the data Porway, 2012. The cost can be especially difficult for non-profits to afford (Porway, 2012). In the article by Peysakhovich and Stephens-Davidowitz, the authors explain how knowing how many times an article is clicked on in
Accordingly, the only semblance of a thesis statement was found half way through the article and does not even cover what allot of the article is about. It reads: “Already, nearly half the world’s population lives in countries with birthrates below the replacement level.” Due to his scatter brained writing style it is hard ascertain what his greater point is. He first talks about the fertility drop in Iran, then randomly compares the rate to New England, then says fertility rates have dropped in Morocco, Syria and Saudi Arabia, then bounces back to Iran but instead talks about the economic implications, then swaps to Russia’s fertility drop, then to the effect of the fertility drop on Japan’s demographic profile, then India’s regional problems, and finally lands on how the US will be hurt by the fertility drop and simply stops there. He has no call to action and makes no effort to wrap his jumble up and tie it all together. His final statement is “In the 21st century, the U.S. could be the slowly aging leader of a rapidly aging world.” The sentence only has to do with less than ten percent of the article and leaves the reader utterly confused. In summation, the style of this article is highly ineffective because it is non-linear and
The Australian population is showing an increase each year from previous years. The natural increase of births minus deaths is on the rise and can be contributed to the nations advancement of healthcare technology increasing life expectancy and lower infant mortality and a decrease in fertility rates, mean we as a nation are living longer (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2011). Life expectancy rates have also risen due to the
Even though “big data” is very valuable and has made many great gains for society in both efficiency and knowledge, with the increase in data collection and analytics there are many ethical concerns of how the data is being used because evidence based decision making within the analytics is often done solely on quantitative information, this creates digital inequity. Comparing and examining the works of Socrates and Martin Luther King Jr., we can develop our own ethical belief regarding some of the analytics used with “big data”.
Many people utilize verbal communication, others prefer to do it by writing their feelings. Either way, the objective of this is to communicate their ideas, feelings and even a way to event impulse a movement. In addition, people utilize this forms of communication to express their most deep secrets or the most traumatic events that may have to affect their life. In every society, we can see how people can be part of a change, either in a positive or in a negative way. The decisions that are taking on a daily basis can possibly affect others within society. In the same matter, the decisions that people take can have a deep impact on their emotional state and the way they present their selves in society. The continues fight in order for their
The audience laughs and the idea she is proving is intensified. The moments in which she steps back and allows the audience to think are profoundly effective. The audience feels very engaged and claps when she discusses the moves America needs to take. She leaves the audience by saying, “you do the same thing. Go out, talk to people, listen to people, and, most importantly, be prepared to be amazed.”
During the cold war era the life expectancy grew by about 15 years, however in the 1980’s the world saw a decline in life expectancy especially in the USSR falling from 70 years down to 53 years old(C&C 1040). Along with this came an uncertainty for population growth in developed and underdeveloped countries. For example, in China Emperor Deng established a one child policy, in Iran and other Islam dominate countries governments were urging families to space out their conceptions(C&C 1041).
Big Data is one of the fastest growing fields in the world. Vast amounts of data are being produced by scientific researchers and social media users. Through the power of computing, humanity can analyze and gain useful information the mountains of data that have been collected. But are there any dangers? In their presentation Six Provocations for Big Data, Dana Boyd and Kate Crawford offer many logical and ethical challenges to the Big Data industry. The excerpt of this presentation in Everything’s an Argument contains two of the six claims in the full presentation. These two claims are that “automating research changes the definition of knowledge” and “just because it is accessible doesn’t make it ethical.” Boyd and Crawford, using ethos,
“Communication leads to community, that is, to understanding, intimacy and mutual valuing.” This quote by Rollo May demonstrates the importance of communication, it is how people get to know each other and grow closer as a community, or a family. Can you be a community without communication? Communities are made of people from all around the world, people with different backgrounds and upbringings, which leads to miscommunication throughout everyday life. The function of communication is a commonly debated topic, Margaret Atwood’s, “An End to Audience?” She focuses on the concept that writing is in danger of becoming extinct due to the miscommunication among cultures. Dean Barnlund’s, “Communication in a Global Village,” the main focus is on the cultural integration and the misperceptions that occur when communicating between foreign cultures. Both have common ties in communication, or the lack of. The changes in communication are due primarily to enhancements in technology and through cultural integration. The constant metamorphosis tends to disassemble the primary goals of communication, which are to bring the community together and to coexist and prosper with one another. Communication is what creates communities, hence the root commun, therefore, as a whole the community must come together to search for the solution; how does one clearly communicate to everyone?
In 1950, the average number of children per woman was around 5 and in 2010 that number decreased by 50 percent to 2.5. The major contributor to this dramatic change was advancements in medicine (i.e. birth control). In 1950 the life expectancy of a child was forty-seven and in 2010 it went to seventy. One of the major contributors to this shift was lifestyle changes to healthier living (exercise, diet and less smoking) and advancements in medicine. With aging societies, there comes some potential negative implications to international stability and US national security.
What were the speaker’s primary talking points? (Describe at least three major ideas that the speaker focused on in his/her talk?)
In the last 100 years’ medical advancements have dramatically impacted our society. Medical advancements such as antibiotics, vaccinations, organ transplants, pacemakers and other treatments has saved countless lives. These medical advancements allow people to live longer and healthier lives. Our society no longer lives in fear of getting a common cold or disease that used to be deadly since we know the doctor can prescribe a medication that will be effective. Although these medical advancements are mainly considered to have a positive impact they they do play an important role in our society. “A graph of global life expectancy over time looks like an escalator rising smoothly.
The critical point in communication is that the information is not only shared, but understood by the individual receiving the information. Crisis communication is simply the sharing of information and ideas with the common goal of preparing for, reducing, responding, and limiting the effect of the crisis on a group or community (Sellnow & Seeger, 2013). Communication has evolved with the utilization of social media, television, radio, and websites. The goal is to create a common understanding of the
Hans also talked about Income distribution throughout the world, he goes on to say in the video that there is no ‘gap’ between rich and poor (in that people earn incomes at all possible rates. The riches 20% take 74% of income, while the poorest 20%
