Reflection Paper

When I first decided to expand my education, it had been so long since I had been to school, and I was very hesitant. I talked at length about my decision with my husband and with his encouragement, decided to enroll but still was not quite sure which degree program to enroll in. I knew that this was something that I had always wanted to do since I obtained my Associates Degree in Nursing, but I did not have the courage, nor did I want to give up the time with my family and children. Throughout the course of this semester, I have continuously grown as a writer. Prior to taking this course, I had little experience or knowledge when it came to writing. I used to struggle with forming my thoughts into writing, let alone a paper. I was never confident with what I wrote. My writing had no greater purpose other than the assignment. My writing process included: writing my paper, proofreading it, and turning it in. Once the paper left my hands, it also left my mind. Throughout this course we worked with others, visited the writing lab, wrote critiques, and we were able to revise our papers. I believe that all of this is has caused me to grow greatly as a writer.

The best writing I’ve ever produced is from last semester I wrote a paper for Sociology on how the movie “Selma” related to what we were learning in class. This is the best writing I’ve produced because I thought long and hard about what I was going to write and ended up making a 100 on the paper which I was very excited about. Another reason is that I’m not particularly exceptional at writing I struggle with what words to use and how to really make my writing mean something to the person reading it, and my teacher left me a comment saying how I had thought outside the box and done very well. When I’m writing, my only fear is that I could be using better words so that’s why after I write a paper I always like to continuously edit it until I’m satisfied. Challenges for me are thinking of what to write I guess you could say that I get writers block and I must take breaks and really think about what I want my paper to convey, but once I get an idea usually I’m and can come up with more ideas it’s just really that first few sentences in a paragraph that get me.

Throughout my writing experience there have been many papers that I enjoyed writing and many that I did not. The writing experience that is the most memorable to me is in my freshman year of high school at University High School in Orange City, Florida. I wrote a short story called "Speech to Roseanne". This story was about a young southern female teenager who was just starting high school. During the previous summer time, she had a major dispute that happened between herself and best friend, Roseanne.This dispute carried over to the start of their freshman year in high school. With every paper I write I learn something new. Shortly after starting my first semester of college I realized I would be writing a lot of papers. From term papers in every class, to an English paper due every few weeks. In English 101 I wrote a persuasive paper. With the coming to terms assignment I really dug into someone else’s persuasive paper and dissected it piece by piece. I recalled the rules to writing a persuasive paper and compared it with the op-ed article. I really enjoyed that I was able to do that because I felt that I learned something and I was able to apply my knowledge in a later class. During this English class have learned a ton of new material. English and writing have always been one of my major struggles in school. While in high school I thought I had been taught everything in English material that I would need in life. I was totally wrong. Before learning in this class, I would just start writing. I really did not know how to plan a paper. Since this class, I can now plan a paper using an organized outline to write it.

The final essay of my class being a research paper titled “Power Of Habit” is the fourth essay of my portfolio. My research paper goes over how schools teach nutrition and physical education and how it lacks the habit building to keep those good habits in the future. It also shows what has been changed in attempts to improve the schools and lower obesity but I add my own personal theory that is backed up by information that is gone over. It was a great way to research information about a topic I find interesting while, able to connect it to what I was learning during comp.

g - a very helpful tool for expressing your thoughts and opinions. All throughout middle school, high school, and college I have written papers. While in college I have learned to make peace with writing and now I think of it as a positive experience. I struggled with writing through my school years but while in high school I realized it 's very therapeutic. Throughout this paper, I discuss the types of papers I have written. Further on, we shall look back at the teachers that have inspired me to write.

Over the course of the semester, there has been numerous amount of areas where I believe I have improved in comparison to high school. What has helped me in my writing is the writing class and the in-class writing workshop. The writing class that is located in the Kremen education building has helped me with my writing greatly because in the writing center the person in charge teach us lenses and we apply those lenses to the writing, draft, or reading that someone brings in. The in-class writing workshop has helped me because other students get to read my writing. This is helpful because I get feedback from many students and they let me know what needs to be fixed. A new tool I have been using is They Say I Say. The book is very helpful because of the information and examples it provides such as the templates. I have been applying the templates into my essays and I have seen a significant difference.

Growing up in a Christian home, I was surrounded by people telling me about Jesus and what he for me by dying on the cross and saving me from my sins. Not putting together that it isn’t just about the knowledge of God, but fully believing what His word says. However, in eighth grade I started to see faith differently. That winter, four years ago, the church planned on going to Hume Lake as they do every year. I had gone to this camp multiple times, considered myself saved as a result of knowing bible stories. On one eye-opening night, a speaker explained the difference between knowing the real Jesus with all your heart and not just your head. I felt a tugging in my heart that night and decided to give my life to Christ.

I had many questions about the city when I first came to Pittsburgh. I grew up in a small town, so my view of the city was based off television shows and music. This gave me a skewed perception of the city. I have found that one of the most challenging parts of moving to Pittsburgh is figuring out what role I will play. Fortunately, I have some time when it comes to figure this, and other complex aspects of city life, out. Since I have began this course not only have some of my questions been answered, but I have explored more important questions that I had not previously been asking myself. Questions like “How will I play apart in the evolution of Pittsburgh” and “What gives me a sense of belonging to Pittsburgh”. I still have much to learn about Pittsburgh, but what I have certainly learned so far is that it easy to watch the city move past you, but it takes much more to become a part of the city.

Writing used to be a challenge to me. Trying to juggle the many nuances of writing such as ideas, organization, diction, and style was always a difficult process and finding a method of effectively handling this issue was a blessing to me as a writer. Writing became a formulaic thing to me. Whenever I was assigned an essay, ideas flow through my mind and I already begin to formulate what I want to do and how I want to organize those ideas. Being able to apply that formulaic mindset of intro, thesis with 3 main ideas, 3 body paragraphs filled with evidence and details to support the aforementioned main ideas, and a conclusion always seemed to give me a solid guideline. From there I would simply fill in the blanks with my information and as a result, the skeleton of my paper was made. My experience in an AP English Literature class during my senior year helped me write more effectively, find the perfect setup for different types of papers, and overall solidify my strength as a writer. Over the course of that class I learned how to be concise and direct with my words, organize the ideas of my paper to flow smoothly, and how to adapt to different styles of writing whether it be personal, academic, or a blend of both.

From birth I have lived in the same little community, a quiet place where literally everybody knows everybody. Come hunting season or Sunday morning the quiet dead little community all of a sudden looks like a metroplex. Everyone shares a common love for God, family, and the great outdoors; these core values have directly shaped me into the person I am today. I have been raised up in a very close knit family, and being that we all live on the same county road, every Sunday evening without exception my whole family gathers together to enjoy a good home cooked meal, and the time spent with each other.

One of the easiest and sometimes hardest papers to write are ones that are a reflection on what you have learned over the course. I enjoy reflection papers because it allows me to put what I have thought and felt the whole class onto one paper. It can be difficult because two to three pages really isn’t a lot of space if you feel very passionate but I find a way to make it work. This class was a last minute add on for me because I switched majors to graduate a little earlier. I thought that I was done taking writing classes for a very long time but here I am finishing the tenth week of another writing class. I always get very nervous before taking a writing class because I don’t see myself as the best writer but somehow I manage to still get pretty decent grades. After about the second or third week I realize that I do enjoy writing classes because it gives me an outlet to really write about things that I have passion for while also teaching me something that will be useful later in life.
