Throughout my writing experience there have been many papers that I enjoyed writing and many that I did not. The writing experience that is the most memorable to me is in my freshman year of high school at University High School in Orange City, Florida. I wrote a short story called "Speech to Roseanne". This story was about a young southern female teenager who was just starting high school. During the previous summer time she had a major dispute that happened between herself and best friend, Roseanne. This dispute carried over to the start of their freshmen year in high school. In the end, despite the fact that Roseanne tried to apologize for the comments she made about Mel Bell's family, Mel Bell could not get passed what her formal best friend had said. …show more content…
The story then takes place at Roseanne's funeral as Mel Bell was talking about her regrets about not forgiving Roseanne for the mistake that she had made and encouraged people to let bygones be bygones. My motive for writing this short story was because in my English class we were assigned to write a short story and any topic that we wanted. We were given about a month to brainstorm, write a rough draft, have peer reviews, and write our final essays for our "final" in that class. She wanted us to practice our supporting details in this short story. The person that heavily helped me with this essay was my teacher Ms. Drysdale she showed me how to use more supporting details and also use similes, metaphors, imagery in my particular story on my main character Mel Bell and my co-main main character
Upon entering Columbia College, writing was one of my weaker areas. It was very important that I gained the necessary knowledge and confidence to become a better writer. I didn’t know how to express myself and felt as though my writing was not my interest. As a result of taking English 101, I have gained a better understanding on how to properly research and build a satisfactory paper. Every paper that was assigned seemed like a struggle to complete. Before entering this class, I did not know the meaning of a thesis or why it was important, however, I obtained this skill quickly. I noticed that every paper has an argument and the thesis helps clarify the rebuttal. Now, I have a new outlook on writing. It’s a way to express my thoughts and allow others to see things through my eyes. There is no doubt that I still have a long way to go, but I know if I continue to write, I will get better. Just as I developed more skills in class, the various papers assigned helped to better structure the writer in me. In addition, the subject areas were not only interesting, but very informative and made it much easier to write about my experiences.
Over this quarter of English, I have learned many things out of the three to four essays that we have written. I have learned how to write college papers in the appropriate page requirements. Our teacher noticed after the first two essays we wrote that we suffered from sentence fragments, sentence run ons, and comma splices. I have learned how to fix those errors in my papers that I write. A thing I have learned about myself as a writer is that I write very well when a paper is about my personal life because it is easier to write about yourself than about a topic that you are just researching for the first time. If the paper is about my life experiences, I would get a good grade on it.
My high school years were not spectacular, nor were they terribly productive.I left high school without learning how to proficiently write an essay. However, CUNY's Borough of Manhattan Community College afforded me a desperately needed second chance. It was at BMCC that I sharpened many of the skills I should have mastered in high school. I was able to greatly improve my writing ability. I began college as a student who found writing a 2 page paper to be a terrifyingly daunting task, but due to practice and numerous resources offered by CUNY, I soon was able to compose papers consisting of 10-14 pages with confidence and efficiency.
What can be considered “good writing” varies with context. Qualities that make research papers well written are different from the qualities that make good short stories. In the short story writing community, writers have a small amount of time and space to communicate. Kurt Vonnegut’s story “The Kid Nobody Could Handle” in his book Welcome To The Monkey House exemplifies good writing because within its brevity it packs potent emotional impact. “The Kid Nobody Could Handle” is written with a pacing that pulses to multiple climaxes, a prose that indulges in just the right amount of metaphors, and a story arc that leaves the reader in the sweet bliss of a moral realized.
My most memorable writing experience was in my senior year of high school. We were given free range to write about any subject (if it was school appropriate), so I decided to write on the history of rap music. Now up until this paper I had never made an A on my papers. I had one C paper and usually could not make above a B. I was passionate about this subject though, I love history and old school rap music. I poured my heart, tons of facts, and history into this paper. I felt like I went beyond what was required of me with this paper. I was nervous as all get out. Here it is the day we get our final papers back and……… An A+. I was astonished, I cried. The teacher told me that it was very informative and
As I look back on all of the papers that I wrote during high school, I remember all of the stress that I endured. I remember struggling with writing
I have wrote many different kind of essay and paper. From a point of view of three person, first person, what you think this person is telling you, to writing how you feel, what changed your life to where do you see yourself in the next 10 years. I enjoyed this writing class and I know my teacher has enjoy my present. The only bad thing I can say is I HATE writing annotated bibliography and anything that have something to do with it,

It gave me more of an understanding of what incoming college students face when writing and what to expect in this more academically challenged environment. “What Is ‘Academic’ Writing?” by L. Lennie Irvin is a short story about how first-time college students and how they think to have these kinds of expectation figured out to write an academically correct paper and the troubles they face. He also mentions the Importance of developing a writer’s sense, the myths about writing, the three most common types of college writing assignments and talks about the complex literacy tasks in assignment students struggle with. I really thought his story compare to a lot of what was happening in my life. I was struggling as a writer and I thought I knew what the expectations were going to be heading into college, but I didn’t. The number one thing I would like to focus on and compare it to my life as a writer are the myths people have about
Are you reading this on a Thursday? If you are or even if you’re not, I’m still going to do a throwback to my high school days in English class. The main paper I remember about high school, and many other students do, is the senior paper. The same paper that needed to be done in order to graduate. My senior paper was an example of an argumentative essay. It had to be a certain amount of pages long, so the normal 5 paragraph essays we were used to did not help. What did help was turning in the draft a week before the paper was due. That way we would get feedback from the teacher and fix anything they found that could use more help .
When I look over some of my past writing this semester I would have to say my favorite paper to write would have to be the selfie essay. That paper meant quiet a lot to me because my niece means the world to me. She is my best friend, and without her I am sure that I would be a little more lost in this world. “Mikah spent weeks in the hospital. They finally started to understand what had happened. Mikah had a cyst on her pancreases that caused her sugar and insulin in her body to go out of whack” (Essay #1 Selfie). This was probably the hardest paper for me to write, but I was glad to write it because it had a happy ending. Being able to use song lyrics in this paper helped me express a lot about what I wanted to say. They say a song can say a million things. This is true because when I listen to Reba McIntyre’s song survivor it reminds me strongly about my niece. She is a big survivor and I am not sure where I would be as a person if not for her. “I was born 3 months too early, the doctor gave me 30 days, but I must have had my momma 's will, and God 's amazing grace, I guess I 'll keep on livin ', cause I was born to be..., the baby girl
All throughout my years of schooling, I’ve had just about, one paper that was about one page long, due every year. My papers never had to be more than one page in length. Therefore, I did not have to do much writing or do many essays. Surely not enough to remember any of the assignments. Writing has never been something I enjoyed doing, so I never bothered to many any memories of my writing experiences. I did not think it was necessary to remember any of them since I only had to do them to get a grade. The only writing experience I remember was the first assignment I had in this English 100 class about a writing experience. All week long, I sat there thinking about what to write about, but nothing came to mind as a topic. Then, one thing came to mind, but it was so very vague, I could not write the length that was needed for the assignment. I could only think of a few sentences to write for it. After sitting for a few moments longer, I thought, how about I write about how difficult it was for me to write this essay before it was due.
Since beginning to write papers in English class, I have had countless successes and failures. While many of my English classes have taught me how to improve my writing, I have not learned very much in others. My most recent English class was last year, my sophomore year. My class was particularly undersized; therefore, it gave each student the opportunity to have additional individual attention. Throughout the class I experienced high points, weaknesses, and even difficulties that I never overcame. Overall, my writing skills improved, but only marginally.
Over the past few months, I have learned several different writing techniques. While all of the different types of papers were difficult to write, I believe that my writing skills have improved. In fact, I did not understand all of the assignments, but I did try to do my best on all of them. While I should have used more transitional words in between sentences and paragraphs, I feel that I learned a great deal. It is true that I have not had very much writing experience and the writing process is difficult for me. Sometimes, I do admit, it takes days to complete one assignment, but it will be worth it when I am a proficient writer.
Over the course of this semester each paper that was written helped to introduce me and my fellow classmates to different formatting, and genres of writing. A lot of knowledge was gained from writing these papers and I was able to compare and contrast the disciplinary writings and notice what makes each of them stand out. Reflecting back on these individual papers helps to express what I have learned.
