Psychiatrist Differences

Decent Essays

When people think of a Psychiatrist or a Clinical Psychologist, they often think they are the same thing. Although they both have been trained to help people with psychological distress or mental illness, Psychiatrists and Clinical Psychologists are actually very different in many ways. Their major differences are in their academic training and philosophical approaches to treating disorders. In order to become a psychiatrist, there is a lot of academic training involved. They must attend medical school and earn a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) degree. They can also go for specialized training in psychiatry for an additional three to four years. Since they are medically trained they can prescribe medication.
