Art is perhaps the best way on the planet to show and describe feelings. For many people art is nothing but color on paper, but in truth it is so much more. To be able to properly understand a work of art, which could be a sculpture, painting, drawing etc. You must first be able to understand how the artist has expressed themselves. So we are going to take this one step at a time and look at one of the most popular type of sculpture. Paper mache. Paper mache comes from the combination of French syllables, papier-mache meaning “chewed paper.” The art form gets its name from it’s wet, soggy appearance. For those of you who don’t know what a pinata is, it is basically a paper mache animal or toy that you hollow out and fill with candy. Then you put on a blindfold and hit it with a bat until the candy comes out. This tradition first originated from Spain except you would fill the pinata with toys or other small trinkets instead of candy.
For those of you who are new to art. It is not easy. Frustration can be very common, especially when you sculpt in paper mache. I have done paper mache before and know it to be very unforgiving if you make a mistake. A couple examples of things you want to avoid are: thin spots on your project, (cave in’s), Not too much solution, (Can wreck your base), And painting before your sculpture is dry.
Like I said at the start of this essay. Art is a wonderful way to express yourself in many ways: visual, photographic, sculpting (3D) etc. but one thing everyone must keep in mind is that no piece of art is perfect. If you make a mistake that is just fine, you are not a professional. And if you are, well good for you. But what I am trying to say is that not just anyone can fully grasp or understand art.
