Macy's Big Store Marketing

My favorite two places I normally shop are Macy’s and Old Navy. I always get quality clothes and items from these stores. Both stores are really good in marketing their products both online and in-store as well as use social media to engage their customers. Both store sells quality brands but Old Navy is a cheaper than Macys. Both stores promote special deals both online and in store such as percentage discount and free shipping with an amount of purchase to obtain such deal.

A business model is an important and integral part of the business a strategy of any firm whether big or small. The way a business model is developed determines and indicates the values, ethics and principles on the lines of which the business at large will be operating. It also indicates how the business is going to function and covers various internal and external dimensions of a business and the organization as a whole.

Unlike Starbucks, Macy’s is not doing very well, as evidenced by the fact they announced last month the impeding closure of 68 stores (Peterson, 2017). The company has been struggling for a few years with the growth of the internet and online businesses such as Amazon making their brick and mortar stores impractical in modern times. While the number of stores may not seem like as much of a problem as it is, as other companies have had to close down more in recent years or go out of business in general, this is a symptom of larger problems in both the company and the industry.

Historically, the department store affected every facet of social and economic life in America. The rise of the department store from the mid-1850s to the end of the 19th century was a major revolution for business and society. It revolutionized the shopping experience and created an entirely new view of ordinary retail stores. Endless categories of items from jewelry and accessories to home goods and furniture were available to all customers under one roof. Department stores found success in the early years, because they were selling more than just “products.” They were selling an entire experience to the American consumer. Known for their low prices, convenience, experience, and variety, department stores emerged as the iconic establishments of their time. These stores became mainstream institutions in downtown areas. Everyday thousands of retail stores throughout the United States open up their stores in the morning for the sole purpose of attracting customers and selling them merchandise. For this assignment I decided to do a store analysis of the retail giant Wal-Mart. To begin with I will evaluate the store layout and design. Next I will explain the visual merchandising techniques used that Wal-Mart uses. Finally I will discuss the problems and recommendations that I have for Wal-Mart. Wal-Mart has continually been a leader in the retail industry, and it all starts with the layout of the store.

The companies that were chosen for a company analysis include Macy’s, Kohl’s, and Burlington. Since the retail industry has been lagging behind lately, these companies will help determine the prospective financial investment in the retail industry. As Macy’s as our primary company, we chose Kohl’s and Burlington to be the two comparative companies. These companies are comparable due to the same SIC code of 5311 in the subgroup of department stores. These companies offer similar products and services with little differentiation between the three.

Hollister Co. was founded in 2000 and is based in Los Angeles, California. The company operates as a secondary business for Abercrombie & Fitch Management. The company provides clothing and accessories for men and women. Hollister’s main target consumers are teenagers. Hollister retails its products through a chain of stores in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. They also sell their products online. The marketing strategies that Hollister use to promote their products are by using a logo, a slogan, and informing what their products are pertaining too. Two of the marketing strategies are very effective in attracting consumers while one of the marketing strategies needs more research to be done. Because of Hollister’s well known slogan, attractive logo, and the way they use celebrities to represent their product, this makes them unique compared to other clothing businesses.

Carson, Pirie & Scott Building is quite unusual building compared to other buildings as it continuously developed overtime (Fig 1). Louis Sullivan considered Schlesinger and Mayer’s aspect, giving the new presence and atmosphere to the store among its neighbours along State Street, of the building that lead him to design rounded corner entrance according to the site.The Building is surrounded by the buildings but it stands out definitely. Currently, in the midst of a global recession, Macy's has generated huge profits with same store sales increasing 5.3% year to date. In 2012 same store sales increased 4.6% in the month of February alone (Macy's Inc., 2012). In fact, throughout the duration of 2012, Macy's is projecting even larger profits for its underlying business operations. Even though Macy's has experienced success with both its assortments and brand, its competitors haven't faired so well.
