The industrial revolution had a significant impacted in the way people live from then to now. Today, everyone lives in a consumer society and a person’s lifespan significantly increased which all started with the industrial revolution. Historically, there is an argument stating whether or not industrialization had an overall greater positive or negative effect on society. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily negative consequences for society because of the poor working conditions, it brought a positive thing for society. Industrialization’s positive effects were the amount of jobs it brought for workers, better transportation, and higher standard living. Industrialization brought many jobs for workers in the cities …show more content…
During that time people would send their children out to work in factories or mines. It was very common for young teenage girls to be sent to work in factories. Although, working far from home would mean being separated from their families. It was noted that these girls would get supplied with a home and get paid to help support their family. (The large factory indicated in the photo most likely have provided many jobs for people in the community) (Document 3). There were many factories in cities because it provided a place to manufacture goods quicker and cheaper. In result of all the factories, people would argue that it would create a significant amount of environmental pollution which was true. On the other hand, many people did have a stable employment because the factories created many jobs. Men and women were capable of supplying for their families. (The graphic shows the mass production rate of cars by using an assembly line that could have required a larger work force) (Document 4). One method to manufacture a product that became very popular is the assembly line which made the rate of production per person much greater. It required …show more content…
In the time when railroads were first invented, “going to San Francisco from New York City took only six days. Before the railroads, the trip took months” (Document 5). When the railroads were not yet invented, people mainly traveled by horse carriages, by foot, or by sail. James Watt invented the steam engines which then lead to the invention of railroads. The early railroad trains would move up to forty miles per hour – that was an extensive speed in the 1800s. Trains were most commonly used to transport goods for trade across the countries. Some people believed that the railroads created pollution in the air. The opposition was not as strong because the positive effects on the speed in transportation over-powered the arguments. The railroads allowed the transportation of goods to reach the market much faster, quicker, and cheaper. In result of the new railroads “you can travel cheaply from place to place” (Document 9) Before the railroads, traveling was not very common. It was a large expense to travel but industrialization later made it a feasible cost. It was stated that it more money to ship a shipment out of Europe in the early 1800s. After the industrial revolution began, the prices dropped significantly. It was also proposed that “during the 1800s the amount of railroad tracks increased dramatically in Britain, the Continental Europe, and the United States” (Document 5). The increasing number of
The Industrial Revolution began in England during the 18th Century. This revolution started out in England, and spread throughout Europe and North America. Many technologic and agricultural advances were made during this time. Factories became the main source of production, rather than in home workers. This resulted in many people living in rural areas to move into industrialized cities, which was called rural to urban migration. The Industrial Revolution started in England due to its supply of natural resources, advanced technology and inventions, and political freedom.
Railroads were a huge step in innovations for the United States. The transcontinental Railroad was
The Industrial Revolution was a major turning point in history that took place between 1760 and the mid 1800’s. During this time frame, a variety of different machines were invented and put in factories to make workers and everyday people’s lives easier. These machines had to be run by people such as women and even children because the men were mostly in coal mines. Some of the many negative consequences about these new jobs and new machines being invented were; child labor, physical abuse on the job, and unsafe working conditions. While some might argue that Industrialization had primarily positive consequences for society because more jobs became available, it was actually a negative thing.
Industrialization was a turning point in history for countries across the globe in the 18th century and the 19th century. In the time period of 1850 and 1914, most of Western Europe and America had already experienced impressive economic and lifestyle adjustments thanks to industrialization. In this time of constant innovation and change, Japan and Russia were both trying to industrialize like Western Europe and America did. The goal for both: to keep their own identity and culture in the process and ultimately have great success. Although both Japan and Russia had a similar goal with industrialization, and both were driven by a state-sponsored industry, the experiences for industrial workers in Russia were significantly worse than those in
During the years the tracks were being made, the first settlers began to move westward. Once gold was discovered in these areas, people started to travel across the nation to find gold in California. Chinese Immigrants soon began discovering the gold while mining. Traveling overland before the railroad was completed, took approximently five to six months. Travelers were through rugged mountains and arid desert. “The transcontinental railroad would make it possible to complete the trip in five days at a cost of $150 for a first-class sleeper.” (Digital History). This was an ever lasting change in America. Going from $1,000 and a five to six month trip, to an $150 and five day trip was drastic. Even though, the railroad took many years to connect, it has still been used in todays society.
During the Civil War, factories were built by the Union to defeat the Confederacy. After the Civil War, those factories continued to thrive which consequently led to the Gilded Age. “Gilded” meaning that something is wrapped thinly in gold, but doesn’t look good underneath. Industrialization collectively ruined the crop market, created monopolies owned by corrupt individuals, and restricted upward movement of American society. In response, industrialization had a negative impact on US society in the years 1865 to 1900.
The Industrial Revolution European society has been transformed greatly by the Industrial Revolution. Some of the changes were positive there were also negative ones. The positive changes benefitted the wealthy and the working class, while the negative affected the poor. These changes definitely affected society whether they were negative or positive. Some positive changes were an increase of jobs and a steady economy, as well as growing businesses.
The development of the railroads was the beginning of a new transport system in America, it connected the east and west, and the communication across the continent grew easier. With the railroads brought new life to deserted towns, people settled along the railways, it was faster for people to travel from one way to the next, it was cheaper, and it led to new industries in lead, coal, and
Shrey Saretha 2/8/15 P.4 Industrialization Document Based Question From 1865 to 1900, the United States of America was going through a period of industrialization. This transformation of the U.S. society to a society primarily based on the manufacturing of various goods and services produced a wide range of effects and reactions from the American society at that time. Although some historians may argue that industrialization had a mainly negative effect on U.S. society due to the unfair and now illegal practices taking place at that time, the reforms that took place because of these practices helped create many positive changes for society that still exist today. The initial positive outcomes of industrialization, the negative outcomes, and
The industrial revolution, where unequal treatment in Textile production was all over England and Japan mostly around 1760. The textile revolution began in England around 1760. A series of inventions greatly changed the way cloth was made. After many inventions textile manufacture went from the home to the factory, so did thousands of English women. On the other side of the world in Japan, the industrial revolution was mainly about 1600s and 1700s, Japan worked hard to keep itself closed from the West.
Didn't the traveling time from coast to coast use to take months? Aren't you glad you don't have to take hazardous and slow wagons currently? During the Industrial Revolution, many factors contributed to the rapid expansion of the West. Before the transcontinental railroad was fully completed, the travel time from coast to coast was costly and took months through very troublesome terrain. Even though there were several constructive results from inventions, there were also dire consequences. The improvements made were great but, they came with substantial economic and political costs. One of these great improvements was the construction of the railroad. This helped many Americans to travel west in a week instead months. Towns sprung up all along the railways, increasing the population of the west dramatically.
The growing industry of travel in the United States can be somewhat attributed to the massive birth of railroads in the 18th century. Incredibly fast movement of both goods and people along rails has changed how business plan expansion, where people live, how ideas and knowledge move around the continent, as well as how people travel for pleasure. This paper details the development of the locomotive and railroad over the 18th century, describes the societal and economic impact of railroads, and lists the desires reflected within the United States that led to the advent of railroads.
What once took 20 days for wheat at $100 per ton to be transported from western New York State to Albany, now took only 10 days at $5 per ton for the wheat to be transported the same distance (Keene, 264). The success of the Erie Canal caused even more canals to be completed across the country. About the same time that the Erie Canal was completed the first railway began running in England. In the year 1830, a steam-powered train was successfully tested by the Baltimore and Ohio railroad. As a result, American quickly began creating their own railroads and by the year 1840 the amount of railroad mileage was higher than that of the canals (Keene, 264). The railroad greatly decreased the amount of time it took for certain goods to be delivered. With each new invention of transportation, people were amazed but the invention of the railroad caused the most amazement. People were able to get from one part of the country to the other even faster than before. The intellectual elements of 1815-1848 greatly improved the way of life. Goods were transported faster and more efficiently. People were able to travel from one place to another in about half the time it usually
Railroads became extremely popular in America in the 1800’s. The railroad industry itself began to boom; it was supported by its reputation for speed and efficiency. But, along with the booming industry of railroads came the strong debate that
Did you know the Industrial Revolution started the increase of classes in the well being and it helped the nations start to identify national pride and identities. It also increased wealth. The Industrial revolution changed the United states a whole lot. This revolution had so many positive effects, a positive effect that occurred was that with all the new job openings and the steel production companies increasing, the economy started to grow. This revolution had so many negatives effects, a negative effect that occurred was that kids would work in factories for sixteen hours a day and would only have one forty minute break. A effect of the Industrial revolution also looks similar to an event which is happening today in the 21st century, which is air pollution, with all the factories during Industrial revolution there lead to a lot of air pollution.
