Impact Of Scrooge In A Christmas Carol

Dickens uses the supernatural as a method of holding a mirror up to Scrooge who is forced to confront the error of his ways. Dickens shows us that if Scrooge fails to do this it will result in him having a similar fate to Marley. Dickens uses the ghost to emphasize that there is a chance of redemption for Scrooge “that you have yet a chance and hope of escaping my fate”. Dickens’ use of the supernatural continues throughout the story as a means of arousing nostalgia, thought, fear and action by Scrooge. All of these emotions, which Dickens shows us Scrooge is feeling, demonstrate the gradual change in Scrooge throughout the book, and as these changes take place, our thoughts and feelings towards the relationship we have with Scrooge also changes; we begin to understand him and see under his hard outer shell.

In Scrooge’s past and present, his actions had not been admirable. In reaction to this, Scrooge had closed himself off and become cold and impenetrable by any kindness. He had no empathy for others. Using the first spirit, Scrooge was forced to face the fact that people viewed him as greedy and selfish, and began to open him up to the fact that he needs to change. The second spirit, The Ghost of Christmas Present, arrived and took Scrooge to the home of a worker of his, Bob Cratchit. It showed the family content, despite barely getting by. When Scrooge saw Bob’s sick son, he began to show worry that he would not survive. When the spirit told him that the son would not make it to next Christmas, this made Scrooge want to help him. This kind of emotion was unlike him, showing that he was changing (CC40). The spirit then took him to several other Christmas gatherings, where he enjoyed himself and played many games, even though he was merely in a dream. This spirit was used to open up Scrooge and showed his inner want to be around people. These thoughts for Scrooge were different than his from the beginning of the novel, showing that the spirits were being used to teach valuable lessons to Scrooge. The final spirit arrived, but would not answer when asked if he was the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. Scrooge plead with the ghost to share his lesson with him, fearful of becoming like Marley (CC51). He softened more and more; and thought that if he could have listened to it often, years ago, he might have cultivated the kindnesses of life for his own happiness with his own hands. This shows that, Sccrooge hasbegun to relax and enjoy the merriment, and that he is even considering how his life might be different had he cultivated kindness instead of focusing on making money. The little boy was named Tim. The spirit of the Christmas yet to come told him that if he did not gain the Christmas spirit the little boy would die, it all depended on him. A little while after, they came across a dead body that was covered up. He was told to remove the sheet to unmask the body, but Mr. Scrooge was to frightened. One way Scrooge changed was by being giving. When the ghost of Christmas past, present, and future visited Scrooge he was a sting man. He gave his workers as little as he could and he didn't give anything to charity. After the spirits visited him he was a giving man. He treated his workers kindly and gave them the money they deserved.

In the play "A Christmas Carol" there is really only one main character, and that would be Ebenezer Scrooge. Throughout the play, he is changed by the visits from The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future. The most significant events that changed him are when the Ghost of Christmas Past showed Scrooge when his was only a young boy, when present shared that Tiny Tim was sick, and when Future had taken Scrooge to see what was going to happen when he died.

The first ghost, the spirit of Christmas past, commences the transformation by showing Ebenezer his Christmas past when he was a child. Mr. Scrooge’s reaction provokes the ghost to tell him, “Your lip is trembling. And what is that upon your cheek?”(pg. 15) This shows that the spirit has evoked emotion in Mr. Ebenezer, starting the liberation from his negativity. First, Present takes him to his employee’s house where Scrooge learns how poor and sorrowful his employee, Bob Cratchit, is. Their family is struggling and Tiny Tim, the youngest member of the Cratchit family, is crippled. Unfortunately for Tiny Tim, death may be coming very soon, but he does not care. He is very optimistic and loves everyone by saying, “God bless us everyone,” (704). Next, Present shows Scrooge his nephew’s house and how everyone dislikes him, yet his nephew still toasts to his life. Once he does so his wife seems astonished as she says, “A toast to him?” (709). Soon the Ghost of Christmas Present deliquesces and disappears.

Based on what I read, Scrooge sounds like a old grumpy, greedy, mean man. The text states, that he grumpy and very hard to handle. Also according to the text, he doesn't really care about a lot of stuff like Christmas cause he does not get the point of Christmas. On page 1 shows how how was mean, cause a guy shows up asking for any donations for the poor, but Scrooge tells them to go stuff it, and argues that anyone who is poor can either go to jail , go to the workhouse cause he does not believe in the poor. Until three ghosts are coming cause Marley (one of Scrooge's business partners and friends cause she was a lonely fellow) comes in an reveals a couple things, “Ghosts of terrible people have to endlessly work to make the world a better place”. When Marley and Scrooge meet the freaks out , but stills manages to smart-mouth the ghost horror for a while. When the ghosts leaves Scrooge tries to shake the whole experience off, finds that he can’t, and just instead just goes to sleep.
