There are 25 major specialties in engineering that are recognized by professional societies. In any one of those 25 specialties, the goal of the engineer is the same. The goal is to be able to come up with a cost effective design that aids people in the tasks they face each day. Whether it be the coffee machine in the morning or the roads and highways we travel, or even the cars we travel in, it was all an idea that started with an engineer. Someone engineered each idea to make it the best solution to a problem. Even though engineer 's goals are similar, there are many different things that engineers do within their selected field of engineering. This paper will focus on the architectural field of engineering.

The Empire State building is one of the most remarkable buildings of New York City. It is located in the Fifth Avenue between 33rd and 34th Streets. According to its official site, the Empire State Building was inaugurated on May 1st, 1931 by President Hoover. This building is one of the most visited places in New York not only by tourist but by Americans.

Construction on The Empire State Building began on October 1, 1929 just a few weeks before the biggest stock market crash in United States history. On September 9, 1930, Al Smith the former Governor of New York, marked the spot of the cornerstone of what would become the worlds tallest and the century’s best building. That day Smith gave a speech to a crowd of over five thousand, which included mostly workers in hopes of a job on the upcoming project. The Freedom Tower also known as “One World Trade Center” is the tallest skyscraper in the western hemisphere, and the fifth tallest skyscraper in our planet earth. The building structure consists of 104 stories can also be described as the North Tower of the original World Trade Center. The Building location is 285 Fulton Street, Manhattan New York, United States 10007, as depicted in the map below Figure 1.

However, the monumental, sky scraping constructions of the 1920s and 30s were not constructed strictly for practical purposes and were often built as an expression of wealth and prosperity. The buildings of this period climbed higher than 102 stories tall, a noticeable increase from the last decade, the tallest being the Woolworth building, that stood at just 57 floors. This massive jump in heights was largely caused by a competitive nature. Whether this was displayed through extravagant decoration or height, each new addition to the American skyline was ‘bigger and better’ than the last. The outsides of these constructions were not decorated for artistic merit alone but a statement of success and achievement.

The once legendary Murray Hill, continues to run the best view of the Empire State Building. As residents understand, the location from East 34th to 42nd Street and from the East River to Madison Avenue represent genuine wealth and top notch New York citizenship. Even though they are expensive and you have to wait in line (which feels like forever) at the end it there pretty cool interesting places to visit. They both have meanings to them why it was built, which is quite interesting to learn about while you are there.

The use of the empire state building is to build the world’s tallest building or in New York, but about 30 years later another building beat the empire for being the tallest. The building that beat the empire state building to be tallest in the World Trade Center's North Tower. Another thing that the building is used for the office building. The last thing that is it used for is for the attraction on the 86th floor to see the view and the 102nd floor.

I selected the Statue of Liberty as my ideal piece of architecture for this building essay because of its symbolic and historical background which makes it quite an iconic sculpture. A symbol represents an idea; the iconic structure stands in the Upper New York Bay as a symbol of freedom not only in America but universally. The 102 story building towering over Midtown Manhattan in New York City is the Empire State Building. Constructed in 1931 and standing at 1,250 feet, the Empire State Building stood as the tallest building for almost 40 years until it was surpassed by the Twin Towers in 1970. The buildings plan changed 16 times during the planning and construction process and was still completed in a year and 45 days.

As we’ve discussed in the class before, the history of a building is as important as the buildings function, sometimes even more important. It is important to not forget the historical aspects of buildings like how the White House, the place where modern presidents’ still reside, was built primarily by slaves. It is important to recognize the negative and positive things about a building that tie it to our history, lest these things become headlines when people are reminded of their past.
