The One and Only Empire State Building
Construction on The Empire State Building began on October 1, 1929 just a few weeks before the biggest stock market crash in United States history. On September 9, 1930, Al Smith the former Governor of New York, marked the spot of the cornerstone of what would become the worlds tallest and the century’s best building. That day Smith gave a speech to a crowd of over five thousand, which included mostly workers in hopes of a job on the upcoming project. The Empire State Building opened its doors just eight months later on Friday, May 1, 1931. For a country in midst of a great depression The Empire State Building was a symbol of hope in dark times and showed that Americans would persevere even in a

Raskob was a college dropout and a self-made man who worked his way up through the ranks of General Motors Company. Before The Empire State Building was erected there were a few hoops that needed jumping through. Originally a prominent New York Family, the Astors, owned the plot of land where the Empire State would be built. In 1893, William Waldorf Astor used his part of his land to construct an upscale hotel known as Waldorf Hotel on 5th and 33rd Street. Later to outdo her nephew Caroline Astor erected a hotel at the other end of the block known as the Hotel Astor. The two hotels eventually joined to create one mega hotel which would be renamed The Waldorf-Astoria. The Waldorf-Astoria would remain a prominent luxury hotel until the 1920s until moving uptown.
The empty building now became available for commercial development and many investors were anxious about the opportunity. A group of big money investors came together and decided they wanted to build big as well. According to George H. Douglas, a historian and author Skyscrapers: A Social History, they included, “ Louis G. Kaufman; Ellis P. Earle; John J. Raskob, chairman of the Finance Committee of General Motors; and Pierre S. du Pont, chairman of the board of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and
In order for Alexander Hamilton to get his assumption bill passed, he, James Madison, and Thomas Jefferson made a deal known as the Compromise of 1790 which gave Hamilton the votes he needed to pass his bill and Jefferson and Madison obtained the nation’s capitol for the South and this is where the White House would later be built. Before construction of the White House, though, the President lived in the President’s House in Philadelphia which was built in 1767 and served originally as home to the Penn family, who founded Pennsylvania, and it was probably the largest home in all of Philadelphia. This is where Washington spent his presidency and also where Adams spent the first 18 months of his presidency before moving to the White House. The architect who designed the White House was Pierre Charles L’Enfant in 1791 while designing the District of Columbia. He envisioned a large mansion for the President which was five times larger than the building that was actually built.
The Crystal Palace can be described as a firm glass building that was initially made in Hyde Park, London, in order to be the home for the Great Exhibition of 1851. It was known that “14,000 exhibitors from all around organized together in the 990,000 square foot exhibition space in order to display models of technology that was developed during the Industrial Revolution.” () It was created and designed by a man named Joseph Paxton and is “three times bigger than St. Paul’s Cathedral.” () Once the exhibition was over, the palace was relocated to South London to a place known named Penge Common at the top of Penge Peak close to Sydenham Hill. The Crystal Palace stood from 1854 until its demolition by fire in 1936. The Eiffel Tower was built in Paris, France in 1889. The construction of the tower began in January of 1887 and was finished just in time to be an entry arch for the World’s fair in 1889. The World’s fair was significant because it celebrated the 100th year anniversary of the French Revolution, which took place in 1789-1799. The Eiffel Tower is known “as the greatest prominent artificial monuments in the world and as the most visited paid monument.”() The Eiffel Tower got the name from an engineer, by the name of Gustave Eiffel, whose corporation planned, designed, and built the famous monument that still stands today.
The Fuller “Flatiron” building was designed by Chicago’s prominent architecture firm Daniel H. Burnham and Company ¬– lead by Daniel H. Burnham. Located in the 22nd and 23rd street of Broadway, Fifth Avenue, New York, the building was originally built to serve as offices for a major Chicago contracting firm, the George A. Fuller Company, hence its initial name. As the building finished construction in 1902, the detailed beaux-arts style skyscraper is immortalised through its unique relationship to its urban context then and now, and memorable photography by Edward Steichen and Alfred Stieglitz – making the Fuller “Flatiron” building a famous landmark in the intersecting streets of New York City to this very day.
It was an early saturday morning. Jill was on her way to work, she had to walk about two miles through downtown New York City to get to her work. On her way to work she would always pick up pennies off of the ground and she would save them. So that day at work it was going really slow so she took the jar of pennies and started to count them, after about an hour she was almost done counting them. So that night she brought them home and found more pennies at home. The next day Jill was thinking about what she could do with them, so Jill then called up her friend Richard and asked him what she should do with all of the pennies she has.
million dollars and was planned by BKSK Architects. These buildings were one of the first
One innovative concrete structure I have found that was unique to me was the Willis Tower, which is located in Chicago Illinois. Having nearly 350,000 employees, Sears Roebuck and Company decided to create a central office to fit all of their employees. The company decided to hire architects Skidmore, Owings and Merrill to design this enormous skyscraper. In the early 1970’s the project known as the Sears Tower begun. One unique fact about the Sears Tower was that it took only three years to complete a 1,729-foot tower (from base to tip), which I believe is impressive considering how fast it was built. After completion, the Sears Tower was known to be the tallest building in the world for about 25 years. Another unique fact about this skyscraper
Stage 1- Site: site inspection is done to ensure that everything is according to the approved plans and services are located according to the council plans. At this stage land surveyor might have positioned building footprint to ensure set back distances as well.
A big smile came across his face and started making plans of where he was going put everything. He would put the vehicles in the bay area that was the biggest part of the building. There were small rooms for offices and a double room for library and a room big enough that we would have our meetings there off of the bay area on the other side were going to be the supply room. In the lower room as you come in the back door would be the greeting room for guest as they came in. The Steel Company owned the building was George retired from he knew who to talk to so a contact was drawn up and passed by the board so we in. The Empire Stat was finished on may 1, 1931. The building was help up as symbol of hop in a country gripped by the great depression. But above all the 1,454 ft structure stands as a tribute to the 3,400 workers who risked their lives to finish the job in just 13 months. There were no hard hats, harnesses or safety nets. Although only five deaths were officially recorded, it is thought around a dozen
The Citicorp Center was a business office and was a modern skyscraper of its time. The skyscraper was a lot taller and sleeker than its surrounding skyscrapers. It was in NYC and built in 1977 and it nearly fell down during hurricane Ella in 1978. IN the middle of the night welders rushed into put more stilts to save manhattan. The structure was built on stilts that were in the middle of the structure. It was built this way to avoid putting the stilts through the Saint Peter’s Lutheran Church located underneath the property of the bank as shown in the picture model . The skyscraper was built alike to some of the less modern skyscrapers today. The structure had a skeleton like core to make it stable. But to stand on the center stilts it had

Donald went on to acquire some of the most exclusive properties in the city. Over the years, Donald has owned and sold many great buildings in New York City including the Plaza Hotel, which he renovated and brought back to its original splendor, the St. Moritz Hotel, now called the Ritz Carlton, and recently the land under the Empire State Building which allowed the land and lease to be merged together for the first time in over 50 years (Donald Trump). Buildings that adorn Trump’s name today are the Trump Casino, Trump International Hotel, Trump Marina Hotel and Casino, Trump Taj Mahal Casino and Resort, and Trump Tower all of which are among his portfolio of real estate properties.
To understand the rise of the prefabricated tower block it is important to recognize that their existence came about as a reaction to contemporary architecture which was codified at the state level. During and after the Second World War, Soviet Realism became the dominant force in urban architecture in the Soviet sphere, especially as Moscow installed puppet states throughout the Eastern Bloc which copied the policies of the USSR. This development was not accepted well by architects and intellectuals, especially in Germany, where the legacy of pre-war modernism was very obvious in cities like Berlin, but also in cities like Moscow, Prague, and Sofia where the classicism endorsed by Stalin was like going back a century. Stalin’s preference for a building style highlighting the power of the Soviet people resulted in a complete stagnation of other forms or architecture, and although very solidly built, his buildings were built on mostly important thoroughfares as prestige projects since the state could hardly pay for every building to fit this style, making its impact on most citizens negligible unless they were privileged enough to get an apartment in one of these buildings. So, rather than to further soviet goals of housing for all, these buildings made social stratification very obvious, as homeless laborers would walk down streets past new buildings with ornate stonework in which they had little hope of ever stepping inside, let alone living. In terms of interior program,
When Sheikh Mohammed gave the green light to his project managers to construct the Burj Khalifa, a Dubai skyscraper 40 percent taller than the world tallest building, it became fairly apparent that the Sheikh had some big global ambitions for his oil rich bit of turf, the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
