For hundreds of years Hollywood has been making countless of different genre movies. One main genre that is very popular is comedy; these films have been entertaining audiences for decades with over-the-top scenes, characters and funny moments. This essay will focus on what features are needed to make a comedy movie by concentrating on the pro-filmic codes, filmic or technical codes, character types and networks, social themes and narrative patterns and stock scenes that go into creating these films.
Comedy is a genre of film that uses humour as a driving force. Even though the comedy business may take on some serious material they most likely end with a happy ending. Comedy films have the tendency to become a mixed sub-genre because humour can be incorporated into many other genres. The different types of sub-genres are slapstick, romantic comedy, screwball comedy, teen comedy, family comedy and black comedy.
Slapstick is the recourse to humour involving exaggerated physical activity which exceeds the boundaries of common sense. Slapstick comedy is a primarily physical kind of comedy based around pratfalls and mild comic violence. For example, smacks in the head, pokes in the eyes, people falling down, etc. It is probably most widely recognized in the comedy of The Three Stooges, The Pink Panther and for a more contemporary example MTV's Jackass.
Romantic comedy films are light, humorous, and playful. The central plot is on romantic ideals such as that true love and is
Comedy is a type of entertainment that uses jokes and skits that are intended to make the audience laugh. In the short story, “Priscilla and the Wimps,” Monk Clutter had the school under control with his gang, the Klutters Kobras. Before Priscilla came, the gang would go around the school stealing kids lunch money from students. When Priscilla came, Monk had finally met his match. Richard Peck’s short comedy, “Priscilla and the Wimps” is a high level of comedy that uses comic characters, comic situations, and comic language to convey the importance of treating others the way you want to be treated.
Charlie Chaplin film City Lights can be categorized as a comedy. A comedy is defined as a professional entertainment consisting of jokes and satirical sketches, intended to make an audience laugh. “Comedy is simply a funny way of being serious” -Peter Ustinov. Comedy is used in everyday life. It is a way to slip in the truth while decreasing the blow. Comedy allows the hard things to hear, to be said in a way where it is not so hard. The truth can be hard to hear sometimes but comedy uses comedic tactics to slip in the truth that is hard to hear, but needs to be said, into the world. In the excerpt from Live right and Find Happiness (Although Beer is Much Faster) by Dave Barry, is a high comedy excerpt that uses the comedic tactics sarcasm and situational irony to express the truth about growing up and how to live right in a funny manner.
How do comedians use comedy in order to display a universal truth? Comedy lightens the mood and allows the listener to think better about the Universal truths. But just what is a so called universal truth? A Universal truth is a truth that cannot be disputed or argued against, but what is the biggest Universal truth? Death... There is nothing more certain that death, Or is there? When people die we have no idea where they go or if they even exist. In fact death is probably the biggest dispute among humans and by this logic, what is life? If we think like this then all throughout our life we are confused since we are confused about death. so the biggest universal truth is not death but in fact it is confusion. Confusion is an emotion we feel
Slapstick, a type of physical comedy most often characterized by broad humour, absurd situations, and vigorous, usually violent action, was, and still is one of the most famous genres of all time. The slapstick comic, more than a mere funnyman or clown, must often be a gymnast, a stunt performer, and something of a master of deception and cunning.
Hundreds of movies are released every year. Filmmakers try to create the next jaw-dropping movie that audiences will stand in line for hours and pay top dollar to see. The key to success is finding ideas that appeal to a mass audience. Viewers are the lifeline of any production company so making something for everyone is a savvy business move for the film industry. To cover all bases, there are over fourteen different genres of movies. Film making is not a solo effort. It is a collaboration between the actors, directors, producers and other key contributors. This combined effort or mise-en-scene includes all the elements of the film to include actors, backdrops, costumes, props and lighting used to meet the director’s vision

First of all, an author must define and identify their audience in regard to their jokes. The essay, "Made You Laugh" by Marc Tyler Nobleman explains in thorough detail the analogy and concept of humor itself. For example, the article states, "Young children prefer slapstick, or silly physical humor" while adults enjoy satirical

Moving forward we will focus our attention on Australian comedy movies, their particularities, nature of the humor. As a source for the study we chose two movies, family comedy-drama Red dog directed by Kriv Stenders and different comedy-drama Muriel’s Wedding. Red dog, more comedy or drama? The movie is based on a real story of a legendary red dog that came to the city of Dampier and united a disparate community of local people.
There are several aspects of a film that will make a good comedy. A good comedy needs well-rounded characters, adventure, and a love story. If a film has well-rounded characters the viewer can relate to them in some way. If a film has adventure there is never a dull moment that will lull the viewer to sleep, and it’s packed full of crazy obstacles the characters have to pull through. If there is a love story of some kind, serious or funny, it will keep the viewer interested throughout the entire film, and keep the viewer wondering what is going to happen in the end. When a comedy has these things it will surely be a good comedic film.
“Tragedy is when I cut my little finger. Comedy is when you fall into an open sewer and die.” -Mel Brooks
* Satirical Comedy. The subject of satire is human vice and folly. Its characters include con-artists, criminals, tricksters, deceivers, wheeler-dealers, two-timers, hypocrites, and fortune-seekers and the gullible dupes, knaves, goofs, and cuckolds who serve as their all-too-willing victims. Satirical comedies resemble other types of comedy in that they trace the rising fortune of a central character. However, in this case, the central character (like virtually everybody
During 1947 to 1957 Ealing comedies was an informal name for a series of comedy films that were produced by the London-based Ealing Studios. The films are most often remembered for being produced during the golden age of British film under Michael Balcon’s direction. The studio during this time produced some of the most famous and influential cinema. Michael Balcon’s take on film was that of the ‘small is beautiful’ persuasion, where he did not care for large organizations. Balcon’s values were decent, virtuous and simplistic. I will be discussing how he displayed this in two specific films. In this paper, I will be discussing and comparing two Ealing comedies the first Passport to Pimlico (1949) and the second The Ladykillers 1955. The first film I will be discussing is Passport to Pimlico which was one of the three outstanding British comedies that were released during the year of 1947.
There are many characteristics that make up a comedy. Characteristics such as mistaken identity, battle of the sexes, and jumping to conclusions are what set the comedic story apart from the tragedy. Within a comedy, no matter how much fault, and dismay may appear within the story, there always seems to be the classic ending of “…and they all lived happily ever after…” Comedies capture the viewer with a sense of compassion and love for the characters in the story. Each character has their own essence, to which they pertain a flaw of some sorts, which the audience can relate to. With the relation to characters there is defiantly a certain interest that is grabbed by the actors, which sucks the audience into the
