Expository Writing - Writing And Writing

I have some strengths and weaknesses as a writer that I am aware of, but honestly it is not an easy task for me. My only strength in writing is my thought process, not the actual writing itself. I have never considered myself to be good in the subject of writing, but I always try my best.

While doing this, I am also learning how to write better as a young adult going into the mature world where writing is key component in everyday life. Lastly, reflection is usually conceived as an after thought. Reflection is known to be more personal to the writer. This is good for a writer to link personal experiences into the writing. Not only is the author reflecting but also the audience too by creating a mental image in their head. Everyone will not have the same reflection because each individual thinks differently about various topics. For instance in the magazine article “Is Google Making us Stoopid?” by Nicholas Carr. Carr explains that Google is something you are researching rather than learning. In the article, Carr explains his reasoning like “When the Net absorbs a medium, that medium is recreated in the Net’s image. It injects the medium’s content with hyperlinks, blinking ads, and other digital gewgaws, and it surrounds the content with the content of all the other media it has absorbed. A new e-mail message, for instance, may announce its arrival as we’re glancing over the latest headlines at a newspaper’s site. The result is to scatter our attention and diffuse our concentration.” This quote makes me as a reader imagine someone clicking off the screen to another window where the email site is. Gordon Grice is fascinated, maybe obsessed with the black widow. He begins provocatively “ I hunt black widows. I capture it. I have found them in discarded wheels and tires and under railroads tires. I have found them in house foundations and cellars…I have found them I hospitals and in the den of the rattlesnake…. (176) In this quote Grice start with first person in place and with the repetition of “I” so that the reader can get the attention into it. Grice’s purpose in the “ Black widow” essay is to inform the audience about the widow’s life style. He shows inspiration, fascination, respect and love for widows. He furthers his purpose by using rhetorical strategies throughout his text.

Throughout the course of freshmen year I have developed different skills and opinions on writing. I feel I have created a more mature style of writing and a better understanding of literature. I have changed my view of writing over this semester and acquired a strong liking for it. The importance of writing has become more visible throughout the past few months. Writing is crucial in many aspects of a person’s life. I have grown to be a more powerful and well built writer throughout this course.

Though my experiences with writing have not been as great throughout the years, I am beginning to improve. I still have notable weaknesses, but then again everyone does. With that being said, I am looking forward to improving my strengths and weaknesses in writing this semester.

The weaknesses I see in my writing are my sentence fluency and conventions. When I am writing an essay, it is difficult for me to have correct grammar and no run-on sentences.

Over the first and second quarters of Dual Enrollment English at Brooke Point High School, I have grown immensely as a writer. I learned a great deal about how to write a paper, as well as, about myself. In the beginning of this course, I felt as if my assignments were going to overwhelm me; I also felt apathetic about completing them. This led me to create my own personal agenda as to how I would complete my assignments. My plan was to overcome my weaknesses and enhance my strengths within the construction my essays, depth of paragraphs and overall assignments.

Writing is an art. Art is used to express emotion and creativity that an individual holds. For me, writing can be relaxing, but stressful at the same time. The way the words flow onto the paper is so soothing, but getting your piece to make sense to the audience is where it can be a little tedious. For me, grammar is a shortcoming I face when writing. My friend, however, is great at proofreading so I get her to revise mine for me. What are weaknesses for some, may be strengths for others. However, writing is a complex tool that may be utilized by many individuals, including myself, to create unique works of art for others to enjoy.

Violence has become a major problem in modern-day society. Gruesome video games and certain entertainment shows such as pro-wrestling has been exposing violence to kids that later on wish to emulate these actions. These actions are then publicized to the world by violent acts toward other species and human beings. In his article, “An Elephant Crackup,” Charles Siebert depicts the violence that humans have done toward the elephant culture and how humans should put a stop to these acts and save elephants from extinction. If only there was a class that focused on nothing but writing, and not just any style of writing, but MLA format and other writing skills. Wait there is, expository writing. Expository writing is a one semester long course, that focuses on the learning from the mistakes of an individual's works of writing and practices MLA format. The beginning the semester started off with, what I can only describe as death threats, of reasons I should leave this class. The beginning few days of class were very new to me as MLA format was being reintroduced. Overall this class was worth my time, hard work and has better prepared me for future writing.

This semester in Expository Writing class, I learned ways that can make my writing precise and professional looking. Specifically, I learned to revise my writing by using two skills of RADAR revision: deleting and reading, and I demonstrated my understanding of these skills in personal statement number 1 and 2.

Writing is a skill that takes time to develop. Knowing your strengths and weaknesses is very important. Being aware of your strengths can help you stand out, and your weaknesses show you areas where improvement is needed. Like everybody I have weaknesses as well as strengths, and being conscious of them helped me improve my writing skills.

Although I was not overly challenged in my last English class, I have several weaknesses as a writer. My biggest weakness is neglecting to ask important questions that could improve my writing. Receiving

I really don't have any idea on where to start this paper, where it should go, and how it should end. It seems that I'm having a slight problem grasping the idea of expository writing. It's like when you were a kid trying to make it all the way across the monkey bars. You want to be able to reach that next rung and you try very hard, but somehow you just can't reach it. I seem to be having that problem. Right now, as I write, I'm not exactly sure I'm reaching the goal of this assignment, but this may be the best that it gets.

Waterdown is a small community which has been a part of the greater community of Hamilton, Ontario since the year 2001. The village of Waterdown is home to approximately 19,500 people and its population is continuously growing. Waterdown can be described as an up and coming area. In the last few years the town has seen numerous residential and commercial areas pop up in what seems like a matter of days; the community is rapidly changing. As an individual who has lived in Waterdown my whole life, all this change can be a bit overwhelming because I have grown attached to my hometown and specifically, my neighbourhood.
