English is an international language and it is almost compulsory in many countries. In my eight week of English 151B class, I have learned that how important it is for a college student to write effectively while arranging proper thoughts in a paragraph. It is very important to focus yourself while writing about a topic. I have learned about the importance of writing in a good organized way with proper punctuation.
A good sentence is created without the use of run on. When I attended this class for the first time I was so bad at writing good sentences. I used to write so many run-ons without my realization. Slowly, with the passage of 2 weeks of class, I learned that run-ons play an important role in writing especially when you are writing your essay, or paragraph for an academic purpose. Run-ons are sentences in which students two or more independent clauses without the use of proper punctuation or conjunction. Now, whenever I write I double check my essay that whether my sentence are correct or does my essay avoids run-ons.

I always used to start my writing with present tense and then all of sudden without knowing turn the tense into past. My mistake always troubled me while writing. It was making my writing week and did not even make sense. I got B grades on my many essays because of the changes in tenses. It was confusing readers. Through the 4 weeks of class, I learned about using proper verb tenses. I went through the website flying words and have taken advices from instructor. My writing improved so much better with verb tenses. Now, my essay makes proper sense and does not confuse
I immensely struggled when writing. Taking my scrambled thoughts and uncoordinated analysis and converting it into clean and understandable words on a page was arduous. I could not express my thoughts in proper academic format. I understood the importance of writing to every subject. It was essential that I learn to condense my ideas and feeling into coherent written word. After much debate, I decided that the best way to improve my writing skills was to take an advanced English course.
On January 14th I was able to learn about three of my classmates in my composition II class. The three classmates I learned about are Djordje, Natalie, and Angelica. We learned about each other’s hobbies, achievements, and goals.
During my first quarter in Honors English 10, I have had my deal of frustration and struggles with the class, along with some success and prosperity. I have found many of my strengths, and plenty of my weaknesses; that I would enjoy building upon for the rest of the school year to come. Although the profuse advice provided by many of my teachers and peers is absolutely valuable (and appreciated), I fancy finding my own way to complete tasks; though it may be an insufficient way.
The meta-analysis of these studies found that method yielded negative results (Anderson, 1997). This proposes that traditional methods of teaching grammar did not improve the abilities of the students. Sentence combining by contrast provides a more effective substitute to traditional grammar and punctuation instruction as it not only develops students’ written work but also improve their syntactic abilities. Furthermore, a recent study establish that instructing students to pay attention to the purpose and real-world application of grammar and punctuation in the framework of writing created stronger and more positive impacts on students’ written work (Fearn & Farnan, 2005). Largely, the studies on teaching grammar and punctuation suggest that, unconventional methods like sentence combining, have a far more significant impact than those of traditional means to develop the quality of students’ grammar and punctuation and subsequently their
Within the English III class, my former experience in creative writing and affinity for classical styles of literature shall more than likely provide the ability for growth within the classroom. As a person who values differing perspectives, my ultimate goal is to obtain a variety of perspectives involving those in the course, as well as the literary discussions relating to real world social perspectives and morality. As a student I am aware of the need to make great efforts in not only becoming involved with the material, but learning to understand and analyze various styles of writing and grammar. despite my lack of experience in English college courses, it will be the strides I make both inside and outside of the classroom that leave a
With completing the half of the semester in the ENGL 160 class, I was able to benefit from a variety of new things from the class. The first time when I came into the class I had a fear that my grammar level doesn’t meet teacher’s requirements, as well as my essays will be simple and I would have “C” in this class. Moreover, I’m international student that is way I was uncertain of my English and I was thinking that during the class period I would understand only 50% of information, but fortunately I get all information from class.
Taking English 1102 my second semester has given me the opportunity to develop my professional writing skills. I learned how to use the writing process effectively by brainstorming ideas, making drafts, and peer evaluations. In addition, I learned the title should give the reader a clue about the main idea of the paper. In my opinion, writing is simply expressing thoughts in a definite form. This self-assessment essay will reflect on my most successful and problematic assignments, errors in my writing, and how I have changed as a writer over the semester.
All my life I have struggled with English due to the fact that I did not learn English till the age of seven as it was not first language. Programs like ESL have helped me improve my English tremendously through high school. Over these past two quarters in college, I learned to improve my writing more than ever, as I have learned that there is no limit in writing. I was able to learn strategies that helped me improve my essays. Over the course of this quarter I was able to learn many new strategies that will help me write my future papers efficiently. I have also learned my strengths and weakness. This quarter I have learned the importance of writing. Throughout high school, I dreaded writing essays, due to the fact that I was not good at it. However, this quarter, writing 20 has changed my opinion on that.
Initially, it can be hard to make friends in college. It is especially hard when people around us keep changing every semester. However, this semester was slightly different for me. Uniquely enough, I came to know some interesting people as a part of my English 101 class. As a part of the course curriculum, every student was assigned a group of random classmates to work as a peer editor throughout the semester. Eventually, me, Donnie, Stephen, and Elle Anna Rose landed in the same group. Our first interaction was short, and it was too limited to share all the information about one another. However, I realize that all of us have very different dreams, beliefs, and personalities that set us apart from one another. Apart from these differences,
Ordinarily, college level writing does not specify the number of sentences required in a paragraph. As a matter of fact, this has developed into a common controversy among college student today. However, while conducting a paragraph is to require around 5 to 7 sentences in each paragraph. In addition, the writer’s goal for the reader is to understand the content as clearly as possible. Ordinarily, what has been uttermost beneficial to the majority of college writer’s revising their sentences or removing inessential words; also, while applying grammar and vocabulary rules.

Although, I realized that my writing skill have not reach into the point I satisfied yet. As I am a junior student, I need to take one more English class to complete my upper division requirement. The English 160-W or Writing workshop, this class has taught me a lot of strategies about how to become a good reader, good thinker, and good writer. my instructor Mr. Krongus has told me at the beginning of the semester, “this class is not like other writing class that need student to follow this or those style of writing, but this class you can write in the best strategy which you think you feel comfortable with.” this is the
Author, John Williams, sets the tone in lesson five by prefacing his lesson with insightful quotes, from Benjamin Franklin and Thomas De Quincey, that speak about the key role of cohesion and coherence within a writing context (65). Now writers must understand and practice the art of organizing words and sentences for a smooth reading experience instead of a choppy, difficult, or confusing reading experience. Overall, the author teaches writers how to arrange their ideas with sentences that work well together, “…arrange sentences so that they flow easily from one to the next” (66).
Writing has always been an important skill for me. Even though I enjoy writing, I always look forward to having my writing at perfection. With the resources I learned, I now have a better understanding for apostrophes, word usage, and essay organization. I hope what I learned from the resource will help improve and write more effectively. Not only it helps students like me to write better in college, but can be an important skill for jobs.
Many Americans have trouble writing. They believe they are good at writing only because they don't'know anybetter. They believe e that their grammer and punctuation is adaquite or even Perfect, until they have to write a paper that is graded at a college level. I had this experience on a recent promotional exam. I believed that I was a good writer and didn't study much for this part of the exam. I refuse to let this happen to me again. I will become the writer that I ,foolishly, believed I was by learning the parts of a sentence, meeting with a tutor and using this site.
As an International student, writing course is and has always been one of the most challenging courses. However, this class helped me to improve my writing skills. The work in this portfolio demonstrates that I have used methods of analysis and evaluation of sources and argumrnts to develop critical thinking skills. Though I have made some progress in appropriate documentation and essay oragnization areas, I have work to do to come to a full understanding of grammar, mechanics and sufficient content use in my essays .
