English 100 Reflection

English 111 was the first class English class that I have taken since my senior year of high school in 2004. When I first signed up for the class I figured it was going to be a bit difficult with reading assignments, I was not expecting to be writing 3 to 5 papers every other week which I found to be hard at first.

I am able to use evidence to back up my ideas and prove my point. My writing this year has helped me grow in this area. I have learned about the different types of claims, like claim of value, fact, and policy, and different methods of arguing, like induction and deduction. I have used all of these techniques throughout my writing. When I am struggling with a prompt, like for my quotation essay, I look at it like an argument. This helps me make my purpose clear. A good example of my strength of argumentation is my paper on why schools should not have letter grades. In this essay, I used points and evidence to argue my claim. I also used a deductive method, meaning that I started with an observation and worked my way to a conclusion. This allowed me to effectively argue my claim and use evidence to support it. I know that I am good at writing an argumentative piece and I believe that it is my biggest

As the Fall 2017 term comes to end, I look back on what I have accomplished in this class. English 102 – Composition II was one of the most challenging and toughest class I have taken at UW-Stout, but feel as though it has helped me to improve my writing skills. Even before the semester started the feeling of anxiety had taken over, as writing has never been my strongest skill, but stayed positive and confident I would be successful. Much to my surprise, my instructor, Michael Critchfield quickly addressed that this class would not be easy and amazingly changed my views of writing throughout the entire semester.

During the Fall semester I engaged in many activities related to the course English 110. For example, the service learning helped me out a lot because, I was not afraid to talk to other people or approach them. Also I was able to explore Hostos Community College by introducing English work to others such as topics about foods and how to have a healthier lifestyle. The course brought me closer to the community and the environment that I am living at because, it was not just work that us the students had to complete but we the students were educating people about the community. I find this very interesting because, although a lot of people that I interviewed did not go to college or maybe did and never finished are getting the opportunity to

This portfolio will show you the turmoil’s of my year in 9th grade English Honors. My assignments shown in this portfolio have been very mediocre and show the many mistakes I have made throughout. I have constantly had errors in my MLA formatting and basic grammar. I think that I have these constant errors because I am just not thoroughly proofreading my work. It also reflects on how many errors have escaped my proofreadings’ and I hope to improve this skill in the future. I have also had a lot of problems with analyzing texts and making through commentaries. Like my proofreading skills, I strive to really improve and strengthen my disadvantages. Strengthening these skills will greatly benefit me in the future if I shall take AP English 11

Throughout the English 111 class, my writing ability has grown to meet all of the course outcomes. In this class I was required to analyze fictional texts and make complex claims that matter in an academic contexts and revise them in order to make grammatical sense. For the 1.0 sequence I focused on Night, by Elie Wiesel and Sarah’s Key, written by Tatiana de Rosnay. Short papers 1.1 and 1.2, focused on each book respectively while major paper 1.3 allowed me to back my claim with both of the texts allowing for a larger exchange of ideas. Within the 2.0 sequence I focused mainly on the Poisonwood Bible, penned by Barbra Kingsolver. As a writer, I am quite sure of myself. I feel that English 101 was a large step in improving and building my skills. Writing is a particular strength of mine, although I struggle when it comes to open-ended prompts. While I can effectively construct an argument, I would consider myself still inexperienced with the writing process. Throughout high school, there were few writing assignments and what I did write was formulaic and lacking substance; giving original ideas or organizing beyond the five paragraph essay is still fresh to me. My teachers would tell us students what to write during a “class discussion” of the literature and afterwards send us to work. After reading through the class syllabus a few times, I get the impression that AP English will be a significant departure from my previous english classes, especially in workload and our power to determine our essay and discussion. Prior to this class, I have taken honors English 9, 10, and 11, with Derry, Armstrong, and Brewer, respectively. Though the specific focus of each class varied, all three, English 9 and 10 particularly, followed a similar pattern of reading, guided analysis and discussion, essay writing, and assessment. Almost all of this was very structured, such that I felt that our essays were pretty formulaic. Additionally, much of the class discussion seemed superficial in places, often discussion time was cut very short,

I learned a lot in my last English class including the fact that I have a lot more to learn and despite disappointing experiences I still feel I can become a great writer.

I read your paper and saw some of a younger me in your writting technique. I noticed your attempt to combine random sentences hoping and wishing for the best. I advanced my writing techniques by practicing writing for fun. I will explain to you the main rules of writing which include paragraphs, transitions, and transitional phrases. Writing is essential and can be easily done with continuous practicing. Working on organization is key to your progression as a writer. I also improved my writing by having others read over it and I would get their opinion. A reader should be able to understand your paper on the first or second reading. Being crystal clear and organizing paragraphs will help the reader to a easy reading experience.

All throughout a person's schooling, students are required to take certain classes, whether the individual wants to take them or not. However, it is required for a reason it is seen as a helping hand went preparing them for the next step. College is no different than kindergarten through senior year there are classes that the student is required to take in order to move on and be better prepped for what is to come. English Composition 1 is one of the classes almost every college student is required to take. Now English has never been my strong suite personally, but rather science and math. This class has increased my knowledge on the aspect of college English, introducing key-points college professors expect. I have learned more grammatical key-points, improved my writing skills, learned how to peer review someone else’s paper and give good feedback, and to properly write an argumentative paper. Those key points will stick with me to enhance my success rate as I further my education in English.

As a hardworking and determined student being a part of the Honors English program would create a challenging, but beneficial, aspect in to my everyday learning. Whether I am in or away from school my main goal is to put in all the effort needed to succeed. I make it a priority to complete all my assignments on time and to contribute to class discussions. Along with this, I am willing to ask questions and come in for extra guidance when needed. Becoming a part of Honors English, for the first time, has created the challenging side that I was missing in regular English. This first semester at the University of Akron has flown by. I learned many new writing concepts that helped me become a better writer. English composition was a required class that I had to take in order to get my degree. Although this class was required I still wanted to take this class to become more knowledgeable about writing. Coming into English Composition I was worried about all of the papers and the workload that I would have to complete. I knew that I was going to have to write a lot more than I previously had in highschool, but I was unsure of just how much. The works that I decided to include in my portfolio comprise of my Literacy Narrative, Image Analysis Paper, and essay titled Mayas Hardships based on Maya’s experiences in I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings. I selected these works because I felt that they are the ones that require the most improvement to them. The papers i've chosen show how far I’ve came In English Composition.

Growing up, English was always a struggle for me, I didn’t like to read or write and, I always found myself, especially trying to avoid reading at all costs. Up until first grade Spanish was all I knew, so when I began school I had to learn the language everyone already knew, English. English scared me and became difficult as I feared that I was falling behind in a subject I should have already know. Soon I found out I was right, during the dreaded parent conferences where my parents were told I was below reading and writing levels. My parents tried to encourage me write and read more but I had no interest as at the time I felt that I was always gonna be behind in English no matter how hard I tried. Later when I got high school things changed, I took an advanced English class just challenge myself after that class, I continued with advanced placement courses as I knew it was time to change my mentality. After high school when I tested into English 49, I became disappointed with my results of finding out that I needed to take English 49, as I believed my writing skills were slightly more developed. Today I am glad that I got the opportunity to take English 49 as with this course this semester I have improved in structuring and organizing a five plus paragraph essay, in grammar and punctuation and, in the analysis of an author's writing.
