English 10: Student Analysis

When it comes to reading and writing the two subjects go hand in hand. Every person is different and everyone has their own way of learning. How someone chooses to advance their skills in reading and writing all comes down to how that individual finds themselves learning best. I believe that in order to become a successful reader or writer you have to ultimately be strong in both. “How to Read like a Writer” by Mike Bunn, offers fair examples of various techniques on how to become more of an effective writer. “When you Read Like a Writer (RLW) you work to identify some of the choices the author made so that you can better understand how such choices might arise in your own writing”, (72). This statement caught my attention almost instantly.

In the past two months i fell like i have accomplished a great deal. As i focus on it more i realize i have become a better reader. I did this by concentrating on my readings and take my time to read them. With the help of my professor and classmates i began to analyze what i read.

When I first entered english composition 1101, I expected this course to be manageable. As an outstanding english student at Clarke Central high school, I believed that I had enough knowledge to excel in this course with no challenges. Dr. Catherine Rogers was able to knock me off of my high horse and make me realize that I has a lot more to learn about reading and writing. She is very comprehensive and analytical, which caused her to give me a c average on my midterm assignments. I put the blame on myself because I believe that I should have been more open to Dr. Rogers’ methods with pre-writing and revision. Now I think highly of reading and writing.

The challenging component this semester was the transition from high school English reading and writing level to college level. It is mainly because High school writing did not have many expectations from students, its main focus was on the ideal five-paragraph essays. As compared to college, writing is mainly geared and focused on one’s ability to thoroughly answer the assigned prompt. Initially, I was not sure if I was capable of handling a fast-paced course, however, I quickly adjusted to the change and I am glad that I chose to stay. In English 10, I have learned many valuable elements that I can incorporate into my everyday writing. I have included my writing from project 2 a rhetorical analysis on, “Black Lives Matter”, which effectively demonstrates my growth as a reader, thinker, and writer.

The goal of writing is to clearly say oneself, administer knowledge, convince, or to construct an intelligent piece. There are four intentions writers utilize for writing. Expressive writing is used to show our preferences. Its first goal is to create relationships to others, add to human thought and culture, and to establish and deepen human contact. Email, Facebook, Twitter, blogs and other social networking sites are used in expressive writing. Literary work is a form of creative writing as in fiction or nonfiction. Its main purpose is to entertain. Novels, plays, and poems are examples of literary works. Informative writing is used to educate or explain something to the audience. This type of writing is clear, accurate, organized, thorough, and fair. Essays, research papers, and presentations are examples of informative writing. Persuasive writing is a more serious form of writing on a doubtful topic. The writer’s goal is to change the minds of the readers or at least to get the readers to question their position on a debate and think about the writer’s point of view. According to Bill Wheeler, “Good writing is clear thinking made visible.” This quote demonstrates that as a good writer you have the ability to express your thoughts clearly. Good writing involves anticipation of the audience’s questions, credibility, logic and storytelling.

A good writer knows, at least a little, about how sentences work. A good writer can carry on a story without boring a reader. A good writer knows when to stop a bad idea, and how to create a great one. A good writer knows how to make their story work effectively in the reader’s mind.

In Honors English (3rd and 5th), ask students to turn in yesterday’s assignment. They have a test on “A Problem” today, so they should log into their pearson accounts online and take the test. I will check their scores and put them in Skyward asap. Once their test is finished please have them read pages 78-79 in the literature book. Their assignment is to read “Like the Sun” (pgs 80-84) and “The Open Window” (pgs 85-88). They should be looking for instances of paradoxes and irony during each reading. They need to complete the critical thinking questions on pages 84 and 88.

In English 1102 students will learn many different techniques throughout the course to understand and compose an analysis on an array of topics. After the course is over it is up to the students to apply what they have learned to everyday life. Many students throughout this course have questioned why they have to learn this material and that it will not even help them in the real world, but they are wrong. Each and everyday people should look at the deeper meaning and analyze situations very carefully or else one may find themselves being deceived. Being able to analyze is a very important skill no matter what career choice you choose. In this course the material assigned also had many life lessons in them. English 2010 follows the 1010 course teaching students to think critically by connecting the ideas of a varied group of authors. Because of its many benefits, many students go on to take 2010 following the introductory course; it seems like the obvious next step in a student’s academic career, but, in a high school setting, it's not for everyone.

For many people reading and writing are the most fundamental skills a person can learn, it can also greatly influence a persons cognitive thinking capacity and the sharing of information with others. However, in some parts of the world, people still do not have access to education or the ability to learn to read and write. Lacking the skill to read and write can make things tough for some one in todays society, however with the right resources and mentors to support, one can find a hidden passion for reading and writing. For me, reading and writing has never been one of my greatest skills, I had always struggled throughout my younger years of schooling to keep an interest. As of today, reading and writing has made a great impact on my life, especially in the last few years since I began college.

The biggest factor that plays in good writing in my opinion is how much emotion the writer puts into his or her work. Honestly, a good reader will be able to tell how much effort was put into a writing from the first couple of sentences. If the reader gets a sense of the writing trying to force words into a sentence or trying to stretch out a page you will lose your reader right then and there. If you honestly believe in what you are writing and have interest in the subject matter the reader will be able to read between the lines and actually have a feeling of being there,

My experience into English 111 not only left me anxious, it became a self-revelation. My learning capabilities were challenged because writing did not come natural and the possibility of becoming a prominent writer were going to take a lot of time, effort and hard work. In spite of not knowing what to expect, I entered into this new semester pumped up carrying an “I can do this” attitude and feeling confident.

However, I am not a perfect writer or reader now and as such, I still have concerns regarding this course. English is a cumulative process that most students must practice frequently to become adept writers and readers. I struggle with consistent practice and while

Although I enjoyed attending college, reading and writing seemed to be a tedious chore to me. I loathed the thought of reading extensive articles and constructing writing assignments for class because I never understood what the instructors expected from me. However, I thoroughly enjoyed reading for leisure and writing short stories, writing lyrics to songs, and creating speeches for personal use. In college, I never really invested the time or effort to perfect reading

Everyone has something that stirs their passion. Something that sparks an interest so deep seated that to not pursue it would be unthinkable. Some find their in numbers, some in athletics, others may find love for science or design but I found mine in English Literature. The intricate of the language itself and a writer’s ability to create powerful emotions in an individual have long been enthralled me. I am amazed at how the words of one can influence thousands. I found my love and passion for English Literature at a very young age. Therefore I feel nothing but pure excitement at the prospect of studying English at university level.
