Dying To Be Thin: The Art Of Public Speaking

In the eleven chapter of A Pocket Guide to Public Speaking, the authors talk about

Mary Fisher uses a topical organizational pattern throughout the speech, and I believe that she used this pattern so she could talk about the main points: ignorance, prejudice, and silence people view HIV/AIDS with, and the need for more of an awareness of the disease. I was able to pick up the main points by listening throughout the entire speech for topics. Mary Fisher’s introduction can be divided into the different parts of the introduction: attention getter can be found in her opening statement as well as revealing the topic, she establishes her credibility in the statement about not wanting to be HIV positive, and finally she previews her body when she says that HIV/AIDS does not care who you are. Much like the introduction the conclusion can be divided into its part as well, and these parts include letting the audience know the ending of the speech is coming, done when she says, “To all within the sound of my voice,” she ends her speech with a summarization,

She states many of her opinions on how the press should stop telling and spreading false events and ideas in the newspaper. When given the chance she tells her audience journalist about how the American press about her feels and how she feels challenged by them. Overall, the beginning of her speech tells the audience how she is going to state information and how they should listen to

Shirley Chisholm's speech is effective because of her use of logical flow of ideas, persuasive techniques, credible sources, and counter-arguments.

Once again his overall posture and confident level was excellent. The speaker shows passion for the subject he is speaking on from the hand movements when he speaks on poverty and domestic abuse as being trivial (a means to an end). The speakers volume was just right he spoke high enough for the back of the room could here, and the speech was easy to understand. When given a speech a speaker should consider his audience in the wording of his speech, is he giving a speech to children for educational purposes or a group of college students, this is call no one left behind so the entire audience is on track.

Her transition into her conclusion was not obvious, and it did not reiterate any of the main ideas from the body. Her closing sentence “We should be getting adults to start thinking more like children”, is an ironic and powerful statement. It would have closed the speech very well, if she had slowed down when she was speaking it. It sounded like she was going to tell us more, because of the way she said the last sentence. Because of this, there was a slight awkward pause between her ending and the audiences clapping. Despite the weird ending, I could tell the audience really enjoyed her speech. It was memorable because of the way she delivered her information, her use of visual aids, and it’s relativity to the audience. I feel the primary message was not only to inform about how children think, but also to encourage adults to be more open minded, imaginative, and creative. In other words, be more like a

However, the speech flipped an interesting emotional switch when she said that she was very anxious about giving the speech. She implied that she wasn’t sure what to say to a group of talented women. I don’t exactly understand her thought when it came to this part, because what would be the point of telling the audience that you’re anxious. For me, it just slowed down the pacing of the speech, because we’re waiting longer for her to get to her actual thesis.

Anna Quindlen delivers at speech at the Mount Holyoke college, here she expresses her opinion on life and the adversities that she went through during her college years. In her speech she uses a casual tone for instance her use of simples sentences like “Being perfect was hard work, and the hell of it was, the rules of it changed” (Quindlen, 296). Throughout her whole speech she was being very casual and you could see that it was meant for young adults as she gave advice like “ Instead I’d like you to give up Give the backpacks”(Quindlen, 299). Furthermore her speech is arranged so it is very much like an anecdote, and in this anecdote she uses devices like pathos and ethos to appeal to her audience in order to bond and give a meaning

During the entire speech, her pathos was very dominant to the argument. She starts out her speech with an anecdote, so she can establish a personal emotional connection with her audience. In her second paragraph she uses the sentence, “... decades before valet parking, fondue lunches, and gear

From a communication and speech analysis stand point Ms. Alexander kept her self poised, keep her tone of voice smooth and inflecting when she needed to drive certain points home. She kept the audience engaged by moving around telling personal anecdotes that related to her topic to allow the persuasiveness of her speech to drive home about the problem of the criminal justice system and race as a whole. Her first point that really captivates and hooks you in within a matter of minutes of listening to the speech is when she says, “ People of color are the main ones incarcerated…Put in cages and treated worse than animals.” Right their she captivates and audience that otherwise believe she's crazy talking about race in the criminal justice system. Ms. Alexander managed to captivate and all WHITE audience on a topic that most had already made up there minds on. Her speech was effective in that all statistics about her topic she

While I was listening to the audio recording of his speech, he sounded so confident when talking to them. He was a persuasive speaker and spoke to his audience with respect and honesty. He began his speech with a strong hook which I believe caught the attention of his listeners and myself. “I

The speaker made direct eye contact at all times unless his head was moving to place emphasis on what he was saying. Further, the speaker spoke loud enough to be heard and did not require me to turn my volume up super high while struggling to hear him. Additionally, the speaker utilized a good pace. He moved slow enough for me to comprehend everything he was telling me but fast enough so that I did not get bored and distracted. Finally, the speaker alternated his pitch throughout the speech which kept my attention. Overall, besides the previously addressed issues, the delivery of the speech was great! I would, however, suggest having more time of the speech spent face to face with the speaker for a more powerful speech.

During the introduction she uses short direct sentences as to keep her audience engaged. Then she begins to tell us personal stories about the books she read as a child and how she started to write stories at a young age. She also makes some jokes in paragraph two such as, ‘All my characters were white and blue-eyed, they played in the snow, they ate apples, and they talked a lot about the weather, how lovely it was that the sun had come out,’ she makes these jokes to keep the audience entertained throughout her speech. In paragraph three she is still introducing the speech but in paragraph four she

Comparing to my pervious speeches, I thought I was more confident and effective. Since we were in the small room, I made sure that the tone and volume of my voices were balanced. Moreover, throughout the speeches I used various hand gestures to help me get connect with the audience. Preparation is one the most effective way to improve in any kinds of speech. Therefore, I could have done better by practice and preparing more.
