America's Core Values Of Individualism And Equality In America

Equality- being equal, especially in rights, status or opportunities. All individuals should be treated equally and there are laws in place to ensure that this happens. In accordance with the law, organisations have quality policies to ensure that everyone is treated equally.

When asked the question, "How is Individualism as a value in the United States compared to other democracies." one can produce many answers. But, the most logical reason by far is due to the heightened opportunities for Americans to better themselves as opposed to other democracies.

The values that I stand by is Robert Nozick ideas. I totally agree that we should do anything with our things if we worked hard to get it. Believe in whatever and what makes us happy. We shouldn’t live in a government system that takes away thing that hard working people put time and sweat to own just to make the poor happy. The biases that I have in life is that people stereotype other cultures from one experience they have occurred. Everyone is a different person, not everyone is alike. I don’t prefer only one cultural communities, I’m a people person. I’m going into law enforcement so every call I’ll get will be different then each others and will be interacting with different communities that I haven’t been around. I feel the most comfortable

Culture can be seen through many variations of media, one being a country’s newspaper. The Madagascar Tribune exemplifies one of their core values being health. Unfortunately stated in the Madagascar Tribune, some paramedicals in rural areas are threatening to leave due to the affects the job has on their personal life. This would leave some without emergency health care. Other core values include political views and economy stability. These values can be seen in stories about mining, political leaders and export goods. America’s core values do include politics and the economy, but they are not the only two.

It is easy to see why this is one of America's core values considering that the first settlers of our nation came here so that they could practice religion the way that they felt was necessary. In the settlers old nation they did not agree with the national religion and therefore took it upon themselves to fix this issue. This will to improve one's life through means which they felt necessary has been passed through the United States since 1620 when the mayflower landed in Plymouth. This is evident in the declaration of independence, over one hundred years after the Mayflower lands. The founding fathers felt that it was “necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another” because the English king had oppressed the colonists. The oppression was so strong that the American colonists pushed back against the crown so they could have there own individual freedoms. Among them are “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. Individualism is an ideology or moral stance where the personal worth, freedom, ambitions and goals of an individual is valued above the good of everything else. In this ideology, the individual does whatever is best for him or her. Self-sufficiency and self-actualization is held at a high standard and valued in this ideology. Individualism is usually defined in contrast to collectivism, which promotes the goals and values of the society above the individual. Hartz and Tocqueville concur that Americans embrace and agree on essential points or fundamental values like liberty, democracy, and equality. These are easy words to agree to but the application of these values can be vastly different depending on who is asked. How American values are defined and applied has split Americans along racial, gender, and class lines since the formation of the United States.

Honestly, I agree with the 5 core values outlined within the first two chapters. However, I do not feel they are feasible nor easily transferable across all cultural values that are expected to harmonize within American society. Americans value equality, freedom, and independence. These value shape every aspect of American culture. We make one gender or race more superior than the other, making people fight for equality. Problems and responsibilities make people fight for their freedom. Trying to take away the rights of an American individual, that they rightfully have, will make them battle for it.

These values have come from a variety of experiences. I was adopted after growing up in a very unfortunate situation. I believe a lot of my compassion for people naturally comes from my early childhood. This was enforced greatly by my adoptive parents. They have always taught me to be a kind, honest and genuine person. I truly believe that everyone is special and if given the right opportunity they can shine. We are too quick to judge, too quick to punish and too quick to give-up.

Every person should have the same treatment and not Treated different, because of culture, race, or even economic statis. People have the right to be free of judgement and inequality. They have the right to express themselves, as long as their expressions does not affect or exclude any individual. Every individual has the right to have the same laws and respect as the next. Equality is not just within laws but should also be within hope and love. Every person should have the option to receive an equal amount of hope and encouragement. Throughout history women have always been the minority and marginalized. They were thought of only being a caregiver, that could not exemplify the same work ethic men did. Women were and still are neglected the same rights men have. Since times have evolved women have fought for the rights they have. Yet even in the year 2015, men are still considered to be the superiority. Women are still denied the equality due to their gender.
