Workshop 1: Sustainability Name: Yi Wei Wang Matric Number: S1531332 Topic: Mass Transport Systems Aims of workshop: To raise awareness of sustainable transport systems. To promote a developing transport system. To present findings in concise manner Introduction: 1. Fossil fuels are non-renewable resource. They are also important raw materials for medical equipment, cosmetics, plastics, lubricants and synthetic fabrics. The burning of fossil fuels also contributed about three-quarter of human-made CO2 in past 20 years1. 2.CO2 is a primary greenhouse gas which is the main cause of global warming. In 2013, CO2 accounted for about 82% of all U.S. greenhouse gas emissions from human activities,2 while 72% of the total CO2 emissions are from highway vehicles and over 50% are from cars and light trucks.3There are 28% of energy used for transportation in the U.S..4 More efforts should be put to reduce the transportation dependency on fossil fuel. In the meantime, biofuel and hydrogen are the alternatives to the fossil oil. Alternative types of vehicle is also invented, such as hybrid and hydrogen powered cars. Mass Transport Systems - Hybrid Vehicles: Hybrid cars are the cars that do not rely on one power source only. They combine the combustion engines and the electric cells and provide propulsion power directly or indirectly. This combination allows the hybrid vehicles driving pass longer distance than electric cars, cut down the fuel usage also reduce the greenhouse gases
The author first explains what a hybrid is, stating “A hybrid is a cross between two established varieties of plant, animal… or technology.” She introduces the hybrid vehicle, a new form of technology that stands as a possible answer for a vehicle that is both energy preserving and safer for the environment. Before she dives into details of how the vehicle works, she enlightens the reader on what the article is about and the objective of the hybrid vehicle. Students enrolling in an engineering course in a post-secondary institution will be more
Currently fossil fuels are the world’s primary energy source. The fossil fuels include coal, petroleum, and natural gases. Fossil fuels are organic materials formed from decayed plants and animals that due to heat and pressure from hundreds of
Coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution producing 2.5 billion tons of CO2 emissions every year (Natural Resources Defense Council 2005). Cars are the second largest source, creating nearly 1.5 billion tons of CO2 annually (Natural Resources Defense Council 2005). Approximately 50% of the greenhouse gasses causing global warming are coming from burning fossil fuels to power or create electricity and another 25% was coming out of our tail pipes from burning gasoline or diesel (Brunsaw 2015).
According to statistical data “Almost all (95%) of the world's transportation energy comes from petroleum-based fuels, largely gasoline and diesel.” (United States Environmental Protection Agency, n.d.).
Hybrid cars are built on the advantages of both combustion engine cars and battery-powered electric motor cars, and the hybrid cars will be an alternative to combustion engine cars until next step technologies such as fully electric vehicles or fuel-cell powered vehicles will take over. This article supports the ideas shown in the main source through hybrid vehicle technology.
Hybrid is a term used to describe a combination of two or more distinctive things, aiming to accomplish a common objective. A hybrid vehicle is a fuel efficient vehicle having two motors- one a gasoline powered motor and the other electric motor. The reason for combining two motors is using their strengths and reducing deficiencies. Electric motor is used at low speed wile gas motors perform better at high speed generating extra power for a particular motor weight. During rush hours, when vehicles are continuously stopping and running, performance of electric motor is appreciative. Gas motor supports higher speed supporting driving at the highways. (Anderson 134-45)
According to Huffington Post, there are over a billion cars on the road every day. This contributes to the major cause behind global warming; Carbon Dioxide. In 2012, approximately 35.599 billion metric tons of Carbon Dioxide were spewed into the air. That is 61% higher than in the 1990s. If this rate of carbon dioxide emission is not drastically reduced, the melting of Earth's ice sheets will not only contribute to increasing temperatures but threaten all of mankind. On March 18, Carbon Dioxide levels have for the first time
I. A hybrid car is a vehicle with more than one power source such as a small internal combustion engine and an electric motor.
What is a hybrid car? Basically, it 's a normal, fuel efficient car that has two motors an electric motor and a gasoline powered motor. It also uses a special system to store braking energy in an onboard battery. But why buy a hybrid? Why not buy a traditional gas or electric powered car? Keep in mind, one of the basic rules of science is the more
Fossil fuels are not only non-renewable, but they’re destructive. The by-products of fuels such as coal, natural gas, and oil include methane and carbon, greenhouse gasses that help trap heat in our atmosphere. Solar PV
According to United State Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), about 82% of greenhouse gas created by human activities is carbon dioxide (EPA, Overview of Greenhouse
The main component of a car would be the power that actually puts the car in motion. To be solely dependent on one power source is not a very good idea as it is not eco-friendly and at the same time not suitable. By 2040, half of all the new cars being sold will be hybrids, according to Exxon Mobile. Hybrid Cars are the cars that uses more than one power sources to run the car. It is usually referred to the Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) which has both the internal combustion engine and electric motors that generates power. One of the main problem with these hybrid cars is that their batteries are extremely heavy and takes up a large amount of space in the car. The concept of Hybrid cars can be a good thing to the environment, but definitely not for the car manufacturer or the customer. Hybrid cars have a convincing amount of weight due to their batteries, even with the existence of lithium-ion batteries. As a solution, Energy Storing Body Panels are used.
Electric motor - The electric motor on a hybrid car is very sophisticated. Advanced electronics allow it to act as a motor as well as a generator. For example, when it needs to, it can draw energy from the batteries to accelerate the car. But acting as a generator, it can slow the car down and return energy to the batteries.
What has changed in the last few hundred years is the additional release of carbon dioxide by human activities. Fossil fuels burned to run cars and trucks, heat homes and businesses, and power factories are responsible for about 98% of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions, 24% of methane emissions, and 18% of nitrous oxide emissions. Increased agriculture, deforestation, landfills, industrial production, and mining also contribute a significant share of emissions. In 1997, the United States emitted about one-fifth of total global greenhouse gases.
Fossil fuels are hydrocarbons, primarily coal, fuel oil or natural gas created from the decade of dead plants and animals. Fossil fuels are formed through the natural process. So they are considered as un-renewable resources because the formation of fossil fuels may take millions of years and the feasible reserves are being run-down much faster than new ones are being made. The use of fossil fuel was started in the industrial revolution with the invention of the steam engine. All fired power stations like nuclear, coal, gas and oil are still working on the same principle of the steam engine. Still, fossil fuels are controlling to change the structure of our global economy. After the invention of the steam engine by James Watt (1769) brought widely increased the energy efficiency. After this invention, the use of fossil fuels is increased rapidly. This helps to give a
