“The Glacier, and with it the Duck, might have moved since then.” Lou Sapienza is the lead organizer of a Coast Guard Operation searching for a missing World War II plane; the Grumman Duck and its lost crew. A challenging problem the party has with finding the Duck is the movement of glaciers since the planes went down close to 70 years ago. Since the 1950s the extent and the movement of the ice sheets have rapidly changed due to Global Warming. Most affected by this climate change is The Arctic, Antarctica and the Greenland Ice Cap. Lou Sapienza and his team of specialists only have a hand-drawn map of where the Duck crashed and an old radar survey from years ago. Their daring task is to predict how the movement of the ice sheet accelerated by global warming might have moved their missing plane. Since global warming is a problem, everyone will be affected by it in one way or another. It is time to act, to confront the problem and find a solution. According to Huffington Post, there are over a billion cars on the road every day. This contributes to the major cause behind global warming; Carbon Dioxide. In 2012, approximately 35.599 billion metric tons of Carbon Dioxide were spewed into the air. That is 61% higher than in the 1990s. If this rate of carbon dioxide emission is not drastically reduced, the melting of Earth's ice sheets will not only contribute to increasing temperatures but threaten all of mankind. On March 18, Carbon Dioxide levels have for the first time
The global mean surface temperature is projected to increase by around 0.3 to 4.8 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial values by the end of the 21th century. Therefore, if we continue to not check the anthropogenic emissions, the increase may be around 8 to 10 degrees Celsius, which is incredibly damaging to various ecosystems internationally. It is difficult to determine the possible aftereffects of the ice sheets melting because the equilibrium-response timescales of them is longer than both the atmosphere and ocean. The ice-sheet/ice-shelf model shows that if the atmospheric warming increases 1.5 to 2 degrees Celsius above the present temperatures, the Antarctic ice shelves will collapse and trigger a centennial scale response –a never-ending
Every year the average American produces over 22 metric tons of CO2 living a normal life (“What is Carbon Neutrality,” 2008); and the United States as a whole produces 6,049,435 metric tons of CO2 yearly (“List of Countries by CO2 Emissions,” 2010). This disturbing figure is the main cause of global warming and we have yet to take responsibility for our actions. There are many different theories of what has caused global warming and the answer is mankind. Humans are the cause of global warming because of pollution, over population, and deforestation.
The rising issue of CO2 emissions in the United States is a problem that we cannot ignore any longer. The main sources of carbon dioxide emissions come from the combustion of fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and natural gas. These emissions also come from everyday use of electricity, transportation and industry. Automobiles, large highways, and leaving your lights in your house on are all everyday examples that emit carbon dioxide. (EPA, "Overview of Greenhouse Gases") Carbon dioxide emissions, which have increased by 7% in the U.S. since 1990, are a dangerous and potent greenhouse gas yielded at a higher rate through coal burning than most other natural gas burning. Increased levels of carbon dioxide can lead to climate change and an increased
“1 gallon of gas =24 pounds of global warming emissions” (UCSUSA). Many of the people in our world today don’t understand just how much The Automobile affects us, our lives, and the world we live in. Undoubtedly, the invention of the car has changed our perspective on the different technology created over the past years. However, cars are some of the leading factors towards one of the largest ongoing problems occurring in our world today. That problem goes by the name of global warming. “Since 1990, Transportation has been one of the fastest growing sources of U.S. GHG” (U.S.D.T), otherwise known as Greenhouse gasses. In which most of us know; global warming affects our health, environment, weather, and ultimately our lives. It is a
We need to find out what cause Global Warming. From the scientists research results, we can see that carbon dioxide pollution from the increase of industry and transportation is a major cause of global warming. These two causes are connected with the growth in the world population. As the population grows the necessity for food and other products increase, therefore industry must grow to keep up with the demand. The increase in transportation is directly due to the growing population and the need for jobs and the growing congestion on our highways.
Automobile pollution increases global warming and causes severe damage to environmental and public health. Carbon dioxide emissions from automobile engines are the leading cause of global warming (Ridlington & Madsen, 2014). Temperatures across the country are experiencing a significant increase causing ice to melt and a rise in sea level. This results in frequent coastal flooding that consequently comes with devastating outcomes such as high
CO2 is one of the many gases that are contributing to the global warming that is affecting the earth right now in the modern day. Global warming has many effects on the environment and one of the main ones we face today is the melting of the polar ice caps. Global warming is getting so bad because more people are driving cars, which burn the oil, so now the ice caps are melting at 9 percent per year. (Natural Recources Defense Council, 2015) If we keep this up global warming will get even worse and the Arctic Summers could be ice-free by 2040. (Natural Recources Defense Council, 2015) The sea level could also rise by 23 inches by 2100. (Natural Recources Defense Council, 2015) Greenland holds 10% of the worlds ice. If this all melts, which is what it is doing now, then the sea level could rise by 21 feet. (Natural Recources Defense Council,
Ice is one of the first indicators of global warming actually occuring and it is important for research to be done on these layers of before they disappear. The recession of glaciers and the fragmentation of ice caps has been a clear sign to many that rising temperatures are having an impact, even on our very lives.
Evidence indicates, Earth’s natural climate has a history of dramatic changes from warmer and cooler periods that can last for a few centuries. Mankind geologically speaking lives in a time period of intense climate change, and over the past million years we have experienced a dozen or so major glaciations, with the greatest occurring around 650,000 years ago, long before the Industrial Revolution, The Ice Age. This cooling period in Earth’s climate lasted for somewhere around 50,000 years and included the extreme buildup of ice that covered major regions, such as the Midwest, Canada, Germany, and several smaller regions. During this time the sea level had dropped by approximately 400 feet and the overall global temperature dropped nearly 9
Every year, almost 7 billion tons of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere by human activity. That is the equivalent of 107,700,000 jet airplanes being in the air at once! This harrowing figure is the main cause of global warming, and has been increasing for the last 50 years. Global warming is caused by the increase of greenhouse gasses, carbon dioxide and methane primarily, in the earth's upper atmosphere directly caused by human burning of fossil fuels, industrial, farming, and deforestation activities. Global warming is defined as an increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere (especially a sustained increase that causes climatic
Because of global warming, glaciers and ice sheets have began to melt. There are also many differences in sea levels and ice sheets. When these ice sheets melt, the creatures that live on the ice sheets’ populations can decrease. Furthermore, a scientist has seen the amount of penguins lower a great amount because of global warming. Their population decreased 21,000 in 3 decades. Global warming also affects communities near the shore. When sea levels rise, they flood communities. Not only this, but the precipitation amount has changed drastically. Since recently, it has increased in some areas and decreased in others. This is because of climate change, caused by global warming. In addition, an invasive bug called the Spruce Bark Beetle
A single gallon of gasoline, when burned, puts nineteen pounds of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. When you think of the amount of gasoline is put into millions of motor vehicles every day, that is a way bigger number. More alarming is that Venus, Earth’s sister planet, has an atmosphere almost entirely made up of carbon dioxide, trapping so much heat that Venus’ surface temperature is an average of 872 degrees fahrenheit, and the pressure is 9.3 bar--about that of the pressure of 3,000 feet under the ocean. Our atmosphere will probably never reach that state, but CO2 amounts it steadily increases, drastic changes can and will occur. For these reasons and many others people should show larger concern for our planet’s climate for their
This first section also discussed the last ice age during the Pleistocene Epoch during which glaciers covered around 30% of the earth and enabled migration across land bridges they formed and created the Great Lakes. The second part of the notes examined "Evidence of Past Ice Ages." This evidence includes land formations such as U-Shaped valleys moraines, and drumlins; marine microfossils that can reveal a lot of information about past glaciation; and ice core records in the Antarctic and Greenland. Finally, the last section of the video discussed "Causes of Ice Ages." Among these are Milankovitch cycles, plate tectonics and ocean circulation, and changes in atmospheric composition. The Greenhouse effect was also addressed in this section, with manmade and natural causes being presented. An explanation of the concern regarding the Greenhouse effect was also discussed: more melting sea ice will impact several areas of human life including health, agriculture, our forests, our water resources, and our coastal areas. In the end, it was mentioned that climate change is a natural process, but humans need to be aware of their influence in alteration or accelerating these changes to prevent
The Arctic is global warming’s canary in the coal mine. It is a highly sensitive area which is profoundly affected by the changing climate. The average temperature in the Arctic is rising twice as fast as elsewhere in the world (nrdc.org). Because of this, the ice cap is getting thinner, melting away, and rupturing. Here is an example of this; the largest ice block in the Arctic, the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, had been around for 3000 years before it started cracking in 2000 (nrdc.org) By 2002, the Ward Hunt has cracked completely through and had started breaking into smaller pieces. The melting ice caps are affecting the earth and its inhabitants in many ways. In this paper, the following concepts and subjects will be
Greenhouse gases come from such mainstays of modern life as electrical power plants, automobiles, and heavy industry. Growing consumption of fuel by less efficient cars and light trucks suggests that motor vehicles may soon overtake industry as the largest source of gases suspected of causing global warming by effectively creating a greenhouse around the Earth. Many people do not want to decrease their standard of living by reducing their consumption of fossil fuels. These people do not realize that if they reduce their consumption, there will be a reduction in the amount of greenhouse gases. If this does not happen and global warming continues, the long-term effects may be catastrophic.
