In the reading of the book Methods in Behavioral Research, the author clearly defines the case study as “an observational method that provides a description of an individual” (Bates, 2012, pg. 121). The objectives of this course fitting to our syllabus were to familiarize us to the practices of psychological research, to advance our understanding of how research is completed and the methods used to do it, and to give us the capability to communicate knowledgeably about the ideas following the research procedure. This paper will use myself as a case study to inspect what I have learned about research as it applies to the above-mentioned goals. An inspection of those techniques and the idea of investigation itself will then be laid against the Biblical guidelines that have been set before us Christians.
What Have I Learned About Research at an Introductory Level? As stated in our syllabus, research is essential to the science of psychology. This course was an introduction to the basic concepts and instruments needed to assess and conduct research. Through understanding the research process, as well as the ideas such as validity and reliability, we become better acute consumers and producers of research. Over the last seven weeks students have dove into the study of research, receiving an introduction to a deeper level of conducting and reinterpreting different research methods. Questions such as, “What have you learned about research at an introductory level?” and “How do you evaluate or critique this from a biblical, Christian perspective?” will be answered in the personal case study that will be conducted on myself. The fascinating thing about research is that every individual conducts it in a different way. Though the case study helps set up a problem-answer- solution type model, individuals use personal explanations in illustrating the problem and indicating a means to solve this problem within the case study itself. The information that I have observed at an introductory level has been briefly composed in this case study.
Case study approach is often associated with descriptive and explanatory research. The research problem is usually “how” and “why” problem, thus resulting in a descriptive or explanatory study (Cooper & Schindler, 2011). How or why questions are being posed, when the focus is on a contemporary phenomenon within some real life context. Case studies usually provide qualitative rather than quantitative data for analysis and interpretation (Yin, 2003). Case study refers to qualitative, analysis of case studies, and field-based construction. It also a description of a management situation. Case study involves data collection through verbal reports, personal interviews, or observation as the primary data. The main feature is the intensity of the study of the object, individual, group, organization, culture, incident, or situation (Ghauri & Grønhaug, 2010).
Men participate in physical activity for many reasons, for example, fitness, enjoyment and so on. However, they may participate in physical activity irregularly. Finding the reasons why men do not participate in physical activity regularly is the aim of the report. Understanding the difference between married men and single men is the main aim. Qualitative research has been adopted in this report. Qualitative research means the researcher can collect complex information on the research topic instead of using numerical information(Zikumund, Babin, Carr & Griffin, 2013). What I have learned about research is that it is a process, a scientific process that psychologist and scientist develop that includes many different approaches and that is carefully peer reviewed and evaluated. There is what is called the Scientific Approach where scientist have an idea or theory and based on their observation will either support the theory or the theory can be falsified by their peers. Data also goes through a review period before it is published in a scientific journal by scientist who have the knowledge and expertise to evaluate it.
