Waterway Contamination

Thousands of plastic water bottles are being tossed inconsiderably into the bayous, rivers, and large bodies of water every year. Because of this action, it raises many concerning issues that appeal to a variety of people. The artist has strong view points and opinions towards the topic of pollution. The artist created an image of a photo-shopped iceberg made of plastic water bottles compared to a real natural iceberg in a body of water. The visual image is depicted in great detail in accordance to the contents of the subject as well as the point of view of the artist. The artist uses rhetorical appeals to bring awareness to the warnings, threats, and stifling of pollution, and what pollution means to them.

Please briefly describe the different types of water pollution mentioned throughout the "Poisoned Waters" video. Fertilizers, Nitrogen and Phosphorous caused algae which poisoned the waters. It caused a dead zone. The farmers who own chickens was allowing the manure to pollute the water. The humans race is all responsible as we pollute our water by throwing garbage into it. Soap, household cleaning agents, toothpaste, and other plastic, lubricant and fuels are all poisoning our water.

The human body is contained mostly of water. Plants and animals will stop to exist without water. Water is used in transportation, cleaning, and other walks of life. It is not hard to figure out that water is one of the planet’s most valuable useful things (Bottcher 2012). When there is an addition of undesired substances from human activities in the groundwater, it can cause groundwater contamination. There are many industrial operations that cause contamination in ground water, due to the large quantities of chemicals used. Chlorinated hydrocarbons, which are used in cleaning products and solutions containing chromium, which are used in metal plating, lead to the groundwater contamination. These industrial wastes are dumped in storage tanks and they leak, thus causing contamination.

Nutrient pollution is responsible for hundreds of dead zones across the world’s oceans lakes and estuaries, and the number and size of them is growing. Many of these dead zones cover thousands of square miles where almost nothing lives (National Science Foundation, n.d., Worldwide Dead Zones section, para. 1). Nutrient pollution, also known as eutrophication occurs when nutrients, most commonly nitrogen and phosphorus, from industrial, agricultural, residential, and airborne sources enter the water in high concentrations. This process results in water that is too rich in nutrients. This in turn causes a chain of events that can cause widespread ecological damage to both aquatic ecosystems. In order to reduce nutrient pollution to sustainable levels and prevent a manmade ecological disaster, mankind must stem the flow of nutrients into our waterways by regulating the sources that contribute to it.

Biological decomposition of organic debris impart a characteristic taste and odour of rotten eggs which is mainly due to hydrogen sulphide. Growth of algae, micro-organisms, hydrogen sulphide and ammonia give an obnoxious odour to water making if unfit for use. The unpleasant taste and odour is aesthetically unacceptable even though it may not pose any serious threat to health.

The lake needs are in great danger and humans need to save the lake so nothing bad happens to It. In the past the water was really bad and people could not use the water. For a couple years and people did not like that. In 2017 there are blooms in the lake and people are yelling about the river and people are buying bottled water and stores are running out of the clean water for people to buy and drink it so people won’t get sick from the lake and then died. “There they found the highest concentration of plastics — denser than in the oceans — in Lake Erie.” Similar results were found by University of Wisconsin-Superior chemist Dr. Lorena Rios-Mendoza.”[Huber] “Trash from beaches, river banks, and neighborhood gutters makes its way into our waterways. Things like plastic cigar tips, food wrappers, toys, and disposable drink bottles get bumped around, blown, and washed off into the streets, through the sewers, and Into Lake Erie.”

The topic that was chosen was turbidity. Turbidity is the pollution in water. Turbidity is commonly associated with cloudiness or haziness in water. The pollution that studied was dirt and how it affected fish. It is important because it is killing our wildlife. There needs to get teams of people each month going out and cleaning up the water. If the dirt in the water affected the fish then the experimental group would die. During the time of researching this topic, it was discovered how different this world has changed, the types of creatures have been affected by pollution.

Many people care about their lake. It’s where they can go to swim and hang out with friends. Residents care about the pollution issue that is going on because more and more people are deciding to live by the lake full time which increases lake pollution. Another aspect that is being affected with the pollution are the animals in the water. The e. coli levels in the area are shifting because of the pollution issues. When the sewage is released into the lake it most definitely does not help with keeping the lake clean. As more pollution problems come up, they need to be fixed by the public living there. The residents surrounding the lake need to pay more attention of what is being thrown into the lake and the status of their sewage tanks to insure they are not leaking or damaged. Previously, water was identified as a renewable resource, renewable resources are resources such as sunlight. In the recent years, water has been re-categorized as a non-renewable resource, although water is able to be used repeatedly because of the water cycle. Unfortunately seeing that a substantial proportion of water is being polluted, this water has become unsustainable, therefore making it nearly unusable again for human use, and non-renewable resource. Our planet is composed of 70% water and 30% of land. Our body is also composed of 2/3 of water. In other words life without water is INPOSIBLE.Imagine what would happen if amount of water in nature would be drastically reduced? I believe we all know the answer and the consequences. The entire flora, fauna and the entire human being will die slowly. Now a day, we have a lot of amount of water in our planet but that is a big paradox because a big part from that water is polluted.
