I chose to study and analyze J.M.W. Turner’s Slave Ship for this project and found it to be very interesting. Immediately while looking at the piece you get a strong sense of emotion and drama that is being portrayed. There is a lot of depth and warmth in the colors that are used and wide swift brush strokes to create the images. The first image that caught my eye was of waves crashing on the left side of the painting. The white tips of the waves are very noticeable against the softer shades of the ocean. Behind the waves is a ship which is the next part of the painting that drew my attention. The ship seems to be caught in the rough waves of the sea and barely able to keep afloat. There is a glimmer of light from the sun peeking through …show more content…
Turner it is a lot clearer as to why he depicted such an emotional and vivid work of art in Slave Ship. Turner was inspired to paint this piece after reading The History and Abolition of the Slave Trade by Thomas Clarkson. In 1781, the captain of the slave ship “Zong” had ordered 133 slaves to be thrown overboard so that insurance payments could be collected. This event probably inspired Turner to create this artwork. Turner became an advocate for abolishing slavery around the world and even exhibited this painting during an anti-slavery conference (History in an Hour).
Common themes that were seen in the Romantic era, which spanned from the end of the eighteenth century to the beginning of the nineteenth century, were naturalism, Gothicism, emotionalism, and exoticism. Salve Ship definitely portrays some, if not all, of these themes. The most obvious used theme would be emotion. Turner is clearly trying to get an emotional response out of his audience with such a dark and dramatic subject matter in this piece or art. It would be very hard not to have high emotions when looking at it. Work of art from the Romantic time period shares many similarities with work that is seen in the modern world and today’s audience can relate greatly to art from that time. There is a strong sense of emotion and erotic response in art in the modern age and people react strongly to that. Art from romanticism brings out the same emotion and response.

The Joint Commission is scheduled to visit Nightingale Community Hospital for its triennial accreditation survey within the next 13 months. The purpose of this document is to provide senior leadership with an outline of the hospital’s current compliance status in the Priority Focus Area of Communication. Recommendations for corrective action are included in this document which are designed to bring the organization into full compliance in the areas where deficits have been identified.
Morisot uses a variety of techniques to illustrate a peaceful moment between a mother and daughter on the seaside. Throughout the piece, Morisot uses a series of short and spontaneous lines to create the figures and masses. The presence of these loose brush strokes throughout the piece create both rhythm and unity, making the piece simple and composed. However, variety is also created by the strong contrast between the foreground and background of this piece. The overlapping of the woman, child, and deck with the ocean and the disproportional shapes of the people and ships create an illusion of depth and space. This depth separates the masses present in the foreground from the background. The colors used in the foreground and background are also juxtaposed, with bolder and darker colors being used in the foreground and more bright and muddied colors being used in the background. This contrast establishes emphasis on the masses present in the foreground of the piece (the mother and child). The implied lines created by the gazes of the mother and child also contrast, with the mother’s view
Florence Nightingale, considered the founder of modern nursing, first began to establish nursing as a profession during the Crimean War. Since then, nursing theorists have continued to expand on the thought that patients are made up of more than just the symptoms they present with, Abraham Maslow, Carl Jung, Dr. Larry Dossey and Dorothy Johnson, but none more so than Jean Watson. She developed a theory of human caring that contained several core concepts, these concepts lay forth the ground work for how we, as nurses, should care for a patient. These concepts included transpersonal caring relationships (going beyond ego to higher “spiritual” caring
Nestled in Southern Indiana just west of Louisville, Kentucky and south of Indianapolis, Indiana is Dubois County, Indiana. Dubois County is comprised of the towns of Birdseye, Ferdinand, Holland, Huntingburg and Jasper. Of those towns, Jasper is the largest and is the county seat (Kelly School of Business, 2014). Over fifty-two percent of the population consists of adults ranging from 25-64 years of age (Kelly School of Business, 2014). The leading cause of mortality in this county is heart disease, cancer, suicide and injuries (Memorial Hospital and Health Care Center & Dubois County Health Department, 2011).
In September of 2012, beginning in the country of Saudi Arabia, hospitals began seeing increased cases of a respiratory virus never before seen in humans. They named it Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS. MERS is a viral respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus. It was originally thought to have started there in Saudi Arabia. It was not until later that they were able to trace the origin back to Jordan starting in April of 2012. All outbreaks of MERS have been traced back to originating from the Arabian Peninsula (CDC, 2015a). Unfortunately, it is not known exactly how MERS was contracted in humans, but it is believed to have come from an animal source, probably from camels. Strains of MERS

The fishhooks from far away look like waves done in oil, but once you stand close to the painting you can see the texture of the fish hooks are actually creating the waves. The tactile quality of the fishhooks creates a sense of implied lines as well. When looking at the image of the ocean, the brain sees the curved lines of the waves, but there are actually no lines there just fish hooks. Isla also presented atmospheric perspective because the image looks like the sea goes on for miles and miles. Also, there is a vanishing point where the horizon meets the sea, alluding to the illusion of depth. The complementary colors of the sea, green with the black, creates a picture of a chaotic ocean rather than a calm
Looking at this painting instills in one a feeling of an almost serious sort of serenity. With the dark blue in the background gives the work an almost mysterious undertone, possibly portraying how life in the ocean is an unknown and often scary ordeal for the creatures that inhabit it. The viewer is struck with a sense of awe at the simplicity of the overall
Joseph Mallord William Turner’s art piece named “Snow Storm: Steamboat off a Harbor’s Mouth” is a very original landscape with a limited amount of bright colors. The landscape shows a ship that appears to be surrounded by a very dark storm. The color scheme the painter used was for the most part neutral, dark, pale colors that gave the art piece an additional darker tone, however he also decided to add an intense white color in the middle, where the ship happened to be located.
I chose to represent this theme because I think it's something many people can relate to. My love of the ocean and travel inspired me to make this painting. This painting connects to other murals and street art because it involved the act of copying
In most romantic art pieces, the balance between natural reason and a feeling of sensuality are perfectly harmonized. The idea of romanticism is to bring to the viewers mind a moral transformation for the human “heart” and the emotions associated with it to its viewers. As Deniz Tekeiner in Modern Art and the Romantic Vision, “Romanticism idealizes nature. Romantics typically take the panesthetic view of the god that is immanent in nature, that nature is imbued with God. The natural human capacities for a profound spiritual feeling, however, tends to be blunt and suppressed beneath the exigencies of modern rationalized life.
In the painting, one can see a ship sail away in the distance against the backdrop of a bloodred sky that matches the red masts of the ship. The sails of the ship are not unfurled, indicating the ship is preparing for heading into a storm. As one looks to the nearer foreground, one may see the many outlines of bodies floating in the sea. The dark skin and shackles indicate that these are the overthrown bodies of slaves. Upon closer inspection, one may see fish, and other sea creatures, being lured into the scene, possibly to eat the slaves.
While I love the painting itself for the design elements, Hunt was never one to leave a colorful painting unsymbolic. Whereas some people may individually explain the symbolic meaning of each pieces of the painting, I rather look at the painting as a whole while also keeping in mind that Hunt painted this painting over a course of six years. At a closer look, the painting appears to depict the evolution of Britain over the six years; there are depictions of farmer land and factories; and sailboats and steamboats. These illustrations represent Britain’s Industrial Revolution, which happened between the 18th and 19th century. Britain, before the revolution, mainly utilized farmers and human labor to craft goods and materials for export, they
After reading the poem I interpret this as a alluring and depressing painting. The painting is beautifully done and there is lots of detail. At the same time there is a lonely feeling the painting gives. From the colours, items picked to but in the boat, what's surrounding the boat, the woman's face you can tell this is not a happy picture. From reading the poem I know that she is the lady of shalott is trapped on the island Shalott, and she was cursed. I know that she would sing and weave tapestries. When she is on the boat she sings her last song and is about to die because of the curse.
