Tim Burton created Edward Scissor hands out of his own experiences in Collage. It is Modern Fantasy which uses narrative and Film conventions to create the mixture of Horror and Fantasy. Fantasy films have their own charatestics and those are how we can determine what genre the movie belongs to. A fantasy Film will normally be in an enclosed space, the setting oF Edward scisoor hand is way that Tim Burton makes the film aFantesy film. Like most movies there is a clsh between a villan and the main Charater changes during the film aswel. Many other things make a film what it is like the Charaters the plot and even the sound.
Usually a change occurs in the main Character of a Fantasy Film e, this could be in a good way or a bad way. In Edward scissor hands Edward is the main Character. He is lonely innocent person who lives in a big mansion. Edward has never had contact with humans so when Peg first sees Edward he is very frightened and decides to hide. Moreover the dialogues that Edward says when he first meets Peg is very desperate and scared however at the end of the movie Edward speaks louder and more confidently. During his stay with Peg he wore white clothes as he returned to the castle he cut off the white clothes leaving the black underneath. This shows a change in personality and figure as Edward becomes himself and doesn’t want to change for the people in the community. However during the course of the film Edward gets more and more comfortable with Humans. Even
The first person who first meets Edward is Peg when she is going up to the mansion to sell her Avon cosmetics. He comes out of the shadows Peg is shocked by his looks. “Oh my! What happened to you?” She asked shocked by his scissor hands. During this the camera shots of Edward are mostly close ups on his face and hands point out his most unique and different features. Edward’s clothes throughout the entire movie are tight, black, leather which is very different to the bright colourful town’s people’s clothes and often these clothes made him stand out which set him apart from the town’s people. Edward isn’t just set apart by film techniques, he is also very much an outsider to the towns who find him curious. This is shown in a few situations. The main one is at the BBQ when George Monroe meets Edward and asks him to play cards. “Would you like that? The only thing is you can’t cut.” George said making fun of Edward’s differences, something he wouldn’t do to a friend. While Edward and Esmeralda are quite different from the town’s people, Peg is one of them but struggles to fit in at times because of how she sees things and how she is more
The most appealing films are those that keep audiences guessing, surprise them at the most unexpected times and break conventional film boundaries. Edward Scissorhands (1990) directed by Tim Burton, is a feature film that does exactly that. It blends a fairy tale story with a gothic horror film, to engage the viewer right from beginning until the resolution. It tells the tale of Edward, who was the creation of an inventor who died before he could give Edward proper hands, and was left with scissors as hands. When he was taken from his gothic mansion, into a “normal” suburban community, he was at first welcomed, but then heartbreakingly rejected when things went wrong. The character of the “monster” is an
In the films of Tim Burton, the antagonists are always troublesome, self-absorbed, and ill-mannered, while the protagonists are always the outsiders. Burton, director of many movies such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands, Frankenweenie and much more, makes the protagonists outcasts because “‘It’s important to feel like you live or understand the character.’ [...] Like young Victor, Burton grew up feeling isolated in the suburbs, with emotionally-distant parents and a beloved dog, bullied in school and probably a bit depressed…”(Hollywood Reporter). The great contrast between the protagonists and the antagonists convey the tone for how he perceives the world and the people in it. In the films Edward Scissorhands and
The film ‘Edward Scissorhands’ by Tim Burton can be seen as a modern day fairytale. However, there are many important themes that make the film richer and deeper in meaning. The film is not simply entertaining, because the director examines the importance of individuality, love and appearance and reality.
Edward Scissorhands, written by Tim Burton, tells the tale of a young man who is lovable, childlike and sensitive, bewildered by the humanity around him, yet is terrifying- someone who has scissors, the deadly weaponry, for hands. Many viewers may read this film as a “Tim Burton” type of fairytale which includes both an alternative aspect and romance. However, through the presentation of mise-en-scene in this film, Burton drives in a much more serious subject of social criticism by establishing two different understandings of life in the movie.
The film Edward Scissorhands is a contemporary archetype of the gothic genre exploring themes such as unrequited love, social rejection and human creation as defined by Tim Burton. Feature films explore different ideals that can be categorized into different genres that create expectations among audiences about characters, settings, plots and themes. Edward Scisscorhands directed by Tim Burton in the year 1990 is described as both a dark romantic fantasy and a gothic horror film. The film tells a story about Edward Scissorhands, the creation of an elderly inventor who dies before he can give Edward his normal hands in place of his scissor hands. Edward is taken from the mansion he lives in by a suburban family in an attempt to live a
Edward Scissorhands also uses elements from the fairytale genre, as shown in the first scene where a grandma is telling a child a bedtime story in a fairytale-cottage-like setting, but is especially reminiscent of the Walt Disney productions Beauty and the Beast, where an outsider falls for a young and beautiful woman, as shown through Edward and Kim’s relationship, and also incorporates Sleeping Beauty’s dark and ominous castle settings. Because of the allusions to such genres, the audience at first assumes that the production is a horror movie, but because Tim Burton has chosen to add elements of comedy into the film, it becomes clear that that movie is no-doubted a satire, which is important as the invited response is achieved through the ridicule of other concepts. Tim Burton cleverly merges and combines a variety of different genres and allusions into the Edward Scissorhands in order to construct and give greater depth and meaning to the overall film in a humorous way. Symbolism also is a significant, if not essential element in the production of Edward Scissorhands. Tim Burton makes the choice to centre the film around Edward’s hands, not only because
Tim Burton’s gothic drama film Edward Scissorhands explores what is immoral with our society. A present issue with humanity is people who are different are encouraged to conform. In addition, society plays by the rules and follow societal norms rather than listening to their hearts. Most importantly, humans are cruel and exploit those who are vulnerable for their own benefit. Through the use of film techniques, Burton proposes the faults in humanity and the brutal nature of humans.
Tim Burton utilizes editing to connect and amplify his story plot and present a significant and important moment with the characters. Burton accomplishes this with flashbacks. Burton uses a flashback smoothly in Edward Scissorhands. When Edward hesitates to hug Kim, but finally has the courage to do so, a flashback intrudes the scene to signal the audience the reason as to why Edward is so shy. The flashback sets a sorrowful and heartbroken mood after Edward’s father, The Inventor, dies suddenly. The audience experiences the grief Edward has, through a dark flashback and conveys Edward’s connection and affection to Kim. During the flashback, Burton also uses eye-line match when Edward looks at the broken hands on the floor after The Inventor dies. The broken hands demonstrate the damage that Edward has received. Edward’s reaction to his ruined present reveals his innocence to the tragedy. Because Edward could not comprehend what has taken place, the audience feels sympathy for Edward’s
How would you feel if you had scissors as hands? In the beginning of Edward Scissorhands, Edward wasn't finished so he was left with scissors as hands. During the movie Edward goes through a journey trying to fit in and be accepted by everyone. In the film Edward Scissorhands, director Tim Burton uses the stylistic elements of juxtaposition and symbolism to develop the theme, never judge someone by their appearance.
Edward has this burning desire to fit in and to be like the people of suburbia and to be normal. But as the film progresses he begins to realise that he doesn't fit in and that he is actually better off on his own in his castle. At the very beginning of the film when Edward first meets Peg his first words are, “I’m not finished” this shows how Edward wants to be ‘normal’. To Edward he is ‘‘normal’ but to the people of suburbia he is a,”perversion of nature” this is in Esmeralda's words. Through out the film edward tries to fit in but struggles. An example of Edward trying to fit in is when he is at the BBQ and the men are cooking the meat,Edward tries to be like the other men and makes kababs on his scissorhands. This shows how he is trying to fit in because he is trying to be like the men in suburbia and do the bbq while the woman are left to do the gossiping and socialising. As the film progressed Edward see that he fits in less and less and so do the people of suburbia. Towards the end the neighbours shun Edward and he becomes wanted by the police for an something he did after he has an epiphany to the fact that he doesn't belong and isn't wanted in suburbia by the suburbians with the exception of Kim. JIm says to him, “who the hell do you think you are hanging out around here huh?... get the hell outta here, Freak!” This is then
What if your hands where replaced with multiple scissors? How would you react? How would you change socially? In the gothic, “Edward Scissorhands” by Tim Burton, various cinematic techniques such as different camera angles and lighting. Burton uses these techniques to convey that you shouldn’t try to change yourself because you were made for a reason, so you should accept what you’re given and make the best out of your situation.
In my essay I am going to reference two films, Edward Scissorhands (1990) and Vincent (1982), directed by Tim Burton. Edward Scissorhands, is Tim Burton’s take on the Frankenstein story. We can clearly see the influences that have appealed to Tim Burton in the classic Frankenstein (1931) was not the character’s monstrousness appeal but the sense of sad sorrow that audiences sympathized to in Boris Karloff’s performance. Whereas in Tim Burton’s vision, we see a “Special” character as the Frankenstein Monster, in the similar way that we call people with disabilities Special. And then we have Vincent, a short stop-motion animation. The short film itself is an entertaining aspect of a suburban boy named Vincent who recites Edgar Ellen Poe and categorizes with Horror film star, Vincent Price. With similarities to Edward Scissorhands, the main character is a chance for Tim Burton to represent himself on the screen as a tortured boy, outsider and artist. I am going to discuss how cultural and psychological concerns are represented through characterization, art direction, cinematography, and sound. I will support my discussion by analyzing a reflection on both the similarities and differences between the two films, and whether a distinctive “Burton” signature (aesthetics, cultural and psychological concerns) is evident.
Collen Antwood was the costume designer for the movie Edward Scissorhands. The old grandma in the beginning of the movie was wearing very fancy clothing. She was wearing a long red dress and a black vest. She also had glasses and earrings as well. The Avon lady (Pegg) was wearing an all purple suit Skirt/jacket.White flats with a bow on them, also she had a purple hat to match with her outfit. She had glasses, pearl earrings, and a watch as well as a big blue suitcase.Pegg had short brown hair .Edward was wearing all black boots as well.He also had crazy nappy black hair.Edward had scissors for hands so did not really wear jewelry.Everybody else dressed like old white people from the 1990s.Wearing suits and colorful clothing. In the movie Charlie and
In our generation, most of the things we do come with judgement and Tim Burton does a great job of emphasizing the theme of not taking an advantage of someone else in most of his movies. He has a lot of movies, but I’m only going to go over the ones that addresses the overall theme. And in those movies I’ll include Batman, Edward Scissorhands, and Beetlejuice. All of these movies have different scenarios that goes into the overall theme of not taking an advantage on someone else. An Example would be Edward Scissorhands, where people took advantage of him because of his skills in cutting things with his “scissor hands”. I’m going to separate the topics into three kinds of people that are most common in taking an advantage. The three examples are a confused person, a gullible person, and a scared person. This will truly emphasize the meaning of the theme and what types of movies that’ll go into these three kinds of examples.
