In a post-nuclear apocalyptic world, genetic mutation has become a controversial topic, revealing how dark human nature can truly be. Although this is what John Wyndham’s The Chrysalids presents as its underlying idea, despite being a science fiction novel, the ideas explored about various societies are plausible. It is clear that John Wyndham wrote The Chrysalids as a warning for today’s society. The novel explores topics that are becoming a reality in today’s world, such as nuclear weapons and climate change. In addition, the novel deals with a variety of issues that individuals face on a day to day basis. Throughout the novel, Wyndham successfully elaborates on the dominance and power of fear.

The Chrysalids is a story set in the future. In the story, the “normal” people living in Waknuks, where David came from, were searching for the abnormal, or the ”mutants” and tried to kill them. Throughout the story, they were very eager to look for David and the rest of his telepathy group to investigate their special powers or even, to kill them. The reason of them really doing so was not because of that the telepathies were actually different, but is due to that they were scared that the telepathies would rule the place as they had special, extraordinary abilities, which “normal” people did not have. Other than that, normal people certainly did not deserve the rights to destroy mutants just because they were not shaped like God’s image,

John Wyndham's novel The Chrysalids shows the consequences of going against the beliefs of society through David who is isolated from society due to his deviant ability. To begin with, being confronted by town officials, David struggles to fit in with the people of Waknuk as he faced constant deprivation due to his telepathic abilities. As John writes, "To be any kind of deviant is to be hurt- always"(Wyndham 167). As stated in the above quote, being a deviant and having telepathic abilities has many negative effects such as being isolated from your family and sent to the fringes. The society shown in The Chrysalids have very strong policies on deviations or something that does not follow the norm. In Waknuk, society sees David's deviant

These sacrifices tend to result in breaking moral laws, letting go of family ties and death. The motives of the sacrifices come from the society of Waknuk. People in this society learn not to accept individuals with physical deformations since they are sent by the Devil. Due to fear, most people abide by the laws but, are quick to bend them in order to preserve their sense of self. Therefore, the novel The Chrysalids, develops the idea through conflict and irony, that people are willing
Through life you are always presented with a situation, now not always are those situations fair. There will be times when you are presented with an easy situation to deal with, but that isn’t always the case.
