Slavery in America brought about a successful south but also proved to be one of the most terrible things done by humans to humans. Slavery became a way of life in early America. Eight out of the first twelve presidents owned slaves. People in the south benefited from slaves the most. Harvesting those huge cotton fields took many hands. That’s were the slaves became key to the success of the south. Slaves were predominately black Africans. Africans made up the majority but they were not the only ones. Native Americans and even English indentured servants made up the rest of the people put into slavery.

Slavery was a big part in the south during this Time the slave owners thought "slavery meant freedom and it was their right to have slaves" ( Foner 403 )Even though slavery was a debatable topic of that time in the South slavery was still considered normal the people wanted slaves to help them make more money cause people with slaves were seen to make more crops and had more money. Slaves were treated awfully they were put through many obstacles such as master beating them they had to separate from their family's and the woman were sometimes forced to have sex with the masters. They were seen as just a piece of property. It is easy to see that slavery affected the agriculture in the United Sates, and how the labor of slaves was important to the growing crop of the Unites States, especially the South. The South was notorious for its vigorous production of tobacco, rice, sugar and cotton, as well as other world agriculture as well. Although the population of the south was a mere 30% the size of the north, in 1861 they grew more than one third of the corn, one sixth the wheat, four fifths the peas and beans and over half of the tobacco in the United Sates. That amount of production in the South was phenomenal, which made it simple to overlook the labor that they used. Despite the Emancipation Proclamation revolutionizing the country, the economy of the South remained stunted and the emancipated slaves were unable to fain economic freedom.

Northern Republicans and Southern Democrats attempted to cure their complete opposition on the regulation of slavery by using federal power to coerce an end to the feud, yet the movement increased tension between the divided nation. By invoking both legislative and judicial power, politicians used laws which included slave codes and freedom laws as well as court decisions like Dred Scott v Sandford (1875) to convince or force the population into acceptance of stances on slavery. The south is the slavery that everyone knows of with slaves from Africa who are born into their lives of torture. These slaves worked on the plantations and were never able to gain freedom from their lives as slaves. They worked in treacherous working conditions and masters owned them. Their masters could sell them whenever they wanted to and whipped them constantly, sometimes for no reason. Families split up, religion was lost, and scars spread across the slaves backs from the harsh whips. Thomas Jefferson wanted to put an end to this form of slavery, so he proposed a document that would do so.

The Southerners legitimized slavery by contrasting it with wage work capitalism. Under slavery, it is a disastrous reality most slaves lived longer, would be advised to lodging and clothing, advised to wellbeing, better sustained, and were more averse to die in light of business related damage than wage workers, especially assembly line laborers in the North.

Slavery in the United States existed from the beginning of European colonization. Colonizers for decades imported from Africa, thousands of people for slave labor for the conquerors. The situation began to change after the War of Independence of the United States, when the thirteen colonies revolted against the government of the United Kingdom. Things such as the cotton gin were being created and as industry grew so did the reliance of railroads for transportation, thus sparking a catalyst that could aid the work force. This was especially important for those living in the United States as it was a relatively new, yet thriving country that was rapidly becoming an economic threat to countries that dominated the world for centuries. While the northern parts of the United States were quickly catching on to a blossoming new century, there was still an old custom being practiced in the south that was widely outdated, slavery. The “necessary evil” was soon becoming a thing of the past, and while the north seemed to be flourishing the south was still grounded in the outdated custom that was long overdue and kept those tied down to it in bondage. Slavery was no longer a needed institution and its insinuation not only hindered the south, but of the overall growth of the United States.

A slave is a man, woman or child who is the lawful property of another person and is compelled to obey them. Slavery is the system of possessing slaves, which could be either one slave or many. Slavery in the United States officially began with the trans-Atlantic slave trade, it also began during this period in a lot of other countries. The slaves were treated inhumanelyfor several years;it was abolished in the United States on December 6,1865 and abolished in many nations. However, it still continues until today. Land, labor and capital become important when economically developing a country. In the attempt to develop America, African Americans and minorities have suffered greatly in finding their identity within their history and equality among those who have discovered their individualities. Slaves were usually Africans who were forced into North and South America. Slaves were built into the constitution and then creating the history of the United States of America. For example, there are three main clauses in the US constitution that pertain to race, which include the three-fifths clause Art. I Sec 2.3, importation clause Art 1 Sec 9.1(how to tax slave trade).

In the first half of the 19th century the Untied States quickly expanded westward, but as the country grew the expansion of slavery became a hotly contended issue. Those states that already allowed slavery, mostly the South, wanted to expand the institution into newly established territories and states, while non-slave states in the North wanted to curtail it. In response, a series of compromises were reached in Congress where each new non-slave state admitted to the Union was balanced by a new slave state. This balance maintained the peace between pro-slavery and non-slave states for most of the first half of the 1800's. But as both sides continued to compromise over the issue of slavery, radical splinter groups began to emerge on both sides which sought to disrupt the compromises.

For the story of American slavery to be complete, it has to include the ills of the system, the changes created in the aftermath of emancipation and the precipitous slide down into the sins of segregation. Many books about slavery and the brutality of the life that so many people had to endure have been written over the years. In this book, David Blight tells the story about two men, John M. Washington (1838-1918) and Wallace Turnage (1846-1916) and their escape from slavery during the Civil War. Although slavery was a horrific era in time, it created many new relationships and compromises. Slaves in the South were treated inhumanly but they still tried to maintain their identity and gain freedom. The world as a whole learned from this time and now blacks are free people. We live in a society where it is said that we have freedom, but even in these modern times, our freedom is sometimes questionable.
