Out of all the words that start with an F, fuck is the only word that is considered the “F word”. There are many origins of this word, some may appear to be true due to the way we use this word in context today, but don’t be fooled, quite a few origins of this word are actually false. Fuck has taken place of many words throughout the years, but this generation is breaking tradition. I think this word will be around for a long time and sooner or later it will be part of our daily vocabulary. A study on Facebook shows that within three days, the word fuck is used over 9.5 million times, and the numbers are growing more and more each day. (“The Most Popular Swear Words on Facebook”)
The origin of fuck has been misunderstood for many years. One

Anytime the word fuck was used before the 15th century it was used to describe a type of hit or strike during a fight. (“Etymology of Fuck”) (“On the Origin of Fuck”) The word “swive” meant to have sexual intercouse back in the day, swive was the equivalent to fuck now-a-days. The word swive came from the Middle English, but isn’t used as consistently as it was back then. Then, “shag” came in place of swive in the 18th century and used mostly by the British. Fuck was first used in the Austin Powers film, many people boycotted the film and tried to get it banned from being played in theatres, but the complaints were not upheld and the movie continued to be made. (“The Definition of Shag”)(“A Fucking Short History of the F-Word”)
There are many different meanings of the word fuck. The most commonly used definition of the word fuck is to "ruin or damage” which is used as a verb. An example of the word fuck used in context would be “Oh fuck! The national identity of Australia has also developed strangely when dealing with taboo, especially with the younger Australians. Many youths no longer find many profanities as rude or taboo as the older generations, in particular with words like “fuck”, “shit” and “bloody” which used to be packed with a certain punch. In fact, many of these words are actually used as interjections (“Shit! No way!”),
The n-word is considered one of the most vicious racial slurs in the English language today. True that the n-word is closely associated with slavery and the oppression of blacks. Even after the abolition of slavery the word still haunted African Americans, especially in more segregated areas; where blacks were viewed as inferior to whites. In recent years the n-word has become less of a malicious slur in parts of our country. Public figures who use the n-word run the risk of losing their jobs. However, since the 1960s African Americans have coined the term “nigga”, when addressing one another. The rise of hip hop culture also enhanced the use of the word-they felt as though they are using the word as a term of endearment. Critics of the
Despite that students now use profanity in their public schools and even more out of school, this could cause more children and teens to use the offensive language around their peers.
The word “bitch” throughout our society has developed tremendously, the use of the word has grown and grown as our generation has progressed. The term “bitch” did not become a “universal female insult until the 1920s” (Pardes) it was insulting and hurtful to women at the time, but now the term has so many definitions. When a woman is called that word it can have many different meanings because the definition has grown as years has gone by. Today the word is not even considered an insult in many situations, it's more of a compliment to some women. Society today has used the word so often that when they hear it, it's normal. The word is being used on a daily basis. Although many people use the term mainly towards women it is still considered an insult. Not only does the term express how one feels towards women, but as how they see them. The way in which hip-hop artists use the term to describe women is unacceptable, artists “are just reiterating the acceptability of the word” (Elan).
In the contemporary United States, using the word is taboo, and it is often replaced with the euphemism "the N-word". "Nigga", is sometimes used among African Americans as a neutral or term of endearment.
Besides literal uses for cuss words (as verbs), over two-thirds of all swearing is linked in expressing some kind of emotional connotation. These help with expressing the speaker’s anger, frustration, and surprise (“son of a bitch”, “f*ck me!”, “holy shit!”) which are done in emotional outbursts of these single words, also known as epithets. In addition profanity has a direct connection with emotional response in that when one utters one of these “worser words” it helps increase heart rate and work as an analgesic, showing how it can help manage emotional pain as it has a direct connection. One such emotional connection could be noted in the use of “FUBAR” (F*ucked up beyond all recognition) in the movie Saving Private Ryan to help the convey the soldiers emotions in how sick of they were of the war. Commonly physical fights take place to help express emotional pain or anger, these are normally avoided by voicing this anger through these taboo words. For example one can use name calling (bitch, asshole), or curse in the form of a put down (eat shit and die) all spur emotional responses and can help avoid physical confrontations by giving a voice to inner feelings. This is commonly seen in rap songs where many cuss words are used to unveil inner feelings. Such the rap group NWA used
According to the first chapter Untangling the “F” –word in Women’s Lives: Multicultural Perspectives by Gywn Kirk and Margo Okazawa-Ray, women’s studies programs were birthed from the idea of feminism. The course began to pop up at different universities across the United States in the 1970’s; the course allows an in depth study of women in social and cultural aspects. Women’s studies courses attempt to explain the experiences and significance of women, which in turn sheds a new light onto the lives of many men and women. Today, the course informs and challenges many men and women to critically think not only in the course but also for the rest of their lives. Feminism can sometimes be misinterpreted, and the ideals of feminism are frequently
In my opinion I think she probably used the word in her work environment with Lisa Jackson. She has probably used it so many times that Lisa got tired hearing it and dealing with it, she finally went to go report it.
It was a the main word back in the 1800’s and up till the civil rights movement. The N word is a very strong word, with repercussions coming for whoever speaks it. The N word is used in many black neighborhoods and ghettos, as the N word is slung to one another constantly. Racism will continue to be prevalent if the N word is still used in predominantly black communities. The N word has racism written all over it, and societies will not make progress towards eliminating racism if the N word is still used, Kevin says, “I am never again going to utter the word “nigger” to describe myself, to describe Black people, to paint a picture of a certain type of mentality born of racial oppression, self-hatred, confusion, of ignorance…”(45). Societies that use the N word to describe one another, is destroying progress made to ending racism. The word is commonplace in rap and inner city cultures, making the word seem acceptable to say in society. Using the n word is not acceptable in any culture in the United States. The amount of hatred towards Black people the word expresses is sickening, and we must make advances in society to eliminate the word from our
Holden has cursed throughout the whole book, but he never used the “f” word. The “f” word makes Holden feel uncomfortable since it too mature for him. This example could hint at that he is not an adult yet. Holden still has innocence, which he thinks that he has already lost.
“[Timothy Jay] estimates that the average adolescent uses roughly 80 to 90 swear words a day.” (Glover)
The art of profanity, are words that a large amount of people find ignorant and derogatory. It is just the opposite; swearing is a form of emotion that has been in all language for centuries. This selection of words or phrases is used by a large amount of people and is preferred by some of the most profound writers such as Mark Twain. He himself used such vulgarities to perfection in his writing, so he could bring excellence to his work. Profanity is not used to downgrade things but in fact possesses the ability to bring out the true meaning and understanding of things. Swearing is important and influential to language because of how it is implied to writing and beneficial to the understanding of the piece.
With this book being presented to students all over the schools, it seems to me that throughout the years it has been very debated whether schools should allow the students to read the “N” word. There is a reason why we do not allow the use of the “N” in the United States. It is prohibited to ever discriminate someone using that type of vocabulary. The “N” word is an offensive, disparaging, and hateful word. I think that using that word in a community that has the majority African American students would make them feel uncomfortable and hurt. There are 219 instances of the word being used throughout the book. If students or teachers are not comfortable with reading the “N” word or talking about racial problems, the new edited book would allow
It seems like the writers of the episode wanted to make the word fag so common that it would take away the power behind the word. Others thought it would backfire and popularize the word and increase the usage. Specifically members of the homosexual community believed that the increase usage of the word would rub off onto the general public. The episode was more so a misguided attempt to sympathize with gay rights. The articles goes on to question whether the meaning of a word is based on the interpretation of the audience, the intent of the word, as it's defined in the dictionary or a combination of all three. Schulzke believes that it is critical to understand that there are multiple factors that go into the meaning of a word. He concludes by claiming that the intent of the usage of the word as well as how the word is interpreted are more important in comparison to the dictionary definition. Which goes with the saying thats its not what you say however how you say it, that's what truly carries
The word "damn" has a long and complicated history. How it entered the English language and answering the questions how, when and why it has come to mean the things it does is difficult to answer. It can be used to mean condemn or condemn specifically to hall (by God), and can be used as mild profanity. Tracing the road damn has traveled to become both a religious term and a swear word shows many interesting features of language and the ways in which language are used.
