For the entirety of the fall semester, I took on a project to create a three-page layout for a fictional campaign in National Geographic magazine about endangered species. The goal was to create different content for my portfolio, challenging my skills in photography and photo-manipulation. I transformed people into animals and used gel lighting and Photoshop to create my artwork (see Appendix A figure 1 & 2). At the end of the semester, I reviewed my completed pieces and two theorists best fit my creative process, Julie Burstein, and Teresa Amabile. Julie Burstein discusses the best way to foster creativity is by ‘letting go’ she outlines this in four lessons (Campbell and Dubois, “Artist Best practices” 25). These lessons include experiences, challenges, limitations and loss (Campbell and Dubois, “Artist Best practices” 25). While Teresa Amabile discusses how the theory of creativity is fostered through her componential model of creativity (Campbell and Dubois, “On theories of” 14). These include domain-relevant skills, creative thinking skills and motivation (Campbell and Dubois, “On theories of” 14). Both of these theorists go hand in hand providing me with the framework for my best work. This essay will discuss how Amabile’s theory for intrinsic motivation and Burstein’s lesson of experience and loss, align in my creative process to be conducive to my work.
Burstein describes one of the lessons to creativity is through experience. In her TED talk, she outlines the
There are differences between Licensed Professional Counselor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. Testing is a large factor in accurately assessing the full scope of the assistance a client may new. Depending on the needs of the client the Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) could be a better fit. In considering the tests that exist, one sample population LMFT’s are likely to work with are children. Development is always a major factor in children with intellectual or behavior issues. One test that is dynamic to this factor is the Profile of Creative Capabilities (PCA).
Creativity is an abstract concept that is crucial as part of our advancements of mankind whether that be in the scientific fields with new inventions and research or in the artistic fields with new paintings and amazing portraits, but most people do not understand that the gift of creativity can be a crucial source of innovative ideas. As a result of the need of creativity, schools must include creativity as part of the daily curriculum that students learn. Students already spent seven hours a day at school, exposing them to a class that helps them efficiently and correctly use creativity would be beneficial to not only students but to all members of society. Places of education such as high schools must include classes in creativity in order to create
While art does have its advantages, it will not solve everyone’s problems. It is true that not everyone enjoys the thrill of creating a beautiful masterpiece because they might have been forced to take that class. However, those who love these classes show that there is a relationship between creativity and
The summary and critical reflection of the book, Out of Our Minds: Learning to be creative" is presented as follows (Robinson, 2011)
The creative curriculum classroom is a community. In the creative curriculum classroom, instruction is based on observing and developing what the children say and do. Based on Vygotsky's term zone of proximal development (ZPD), creative curriculum teachers provide learning experiences that are challenging enough to move children to a higher level of learning, not so challenging as to frustrate them. Creative curriculum teachers facilitate growth and development of all children in the class and create a classroom environment in which their own effectiveness can be affirmed.(Colker)
Outcome 1: Understand the concepts of creativity and creative learning and how these affect all aspects of young children’s learning and development.
The pencil liberates my stresses and sorrows. Bare and unimpeded, my mind is able to isolate itself from anything that was happening in my life. At my art table, which is merely an escape from reality, my curiosity is able to wander. Within this room, five blank canvas's look in on me as I become a mold of my imagination. A step inside my world develops into a sea of color and exploration. The vibrancy of the walls resonates throughout. Over the years, my room has served as my oasis. It’s my escape from monotonous and mundane routines. It’s my exploration of another side of me. I observe such works of art almost as much as I create. Taking notice of my classmates’ innovations and inspired by their creativity, my paintbrush begins to alleviate stress. I strive to produce pieces others will appreciate, but often find myself to be the true admirer. My pride, in this world, is driven simply by my own curiosity to express myself. I credit this side of me as the “passion” that supplements my insane drive for success. This passion has sparked critical thinking in me as well as how I see failure. Life is a blank canvas and you can truly draw whatever you want, and if you fail, you start over and don’t make that same mistake again! Hard work takes ideas quite far, but true success is derived from ingenuity and the generation of
In the video “do schools kill creativity?” presented by Ken Robinson. He argues that school need to focus on creativity which the education system should be focusing on instead of only teaching education. Kids are taught to be educated in academics and not so much on the arts and music. In the video “where does creativity hide?” presented by Amy Tan. She said “the value of nothing, out of nothing comes something.” She only talked about her own creative process-nature, nurture, nightmares. Nature is brain science that causes muse effect, spiritually born with it, past lives, psychosis or depression. She thought that near death is good for creativity. She said creativity is inability to stop looking at associations.
The book Creativity. Inc. , by Ed Catmull with Amy Wallace, is the chronological journey of Ed Catmul and Pixar from the early days until today. The best part of reading Creativity, Inc is that you know that Ed Catmull isn’t just talking the talk, he’s walking the walk. This book is separated into 4 categories: Getting Started, Protecting The New, Building and Sustaining and Testing What We Know.
John Lehrer was caught in June 2012, plagiarizing himself by taking his old work from his blog and re-publishing it as new in The New Yorker. It was also discovered that Lehrer had also used previously published work for his book Imagine:How Creativity Works. Weeks later it was discovered that Lehrer also fabricated quotes that are attributed to musician Bob Dylan in this book. In the end Lehrer resigned from The New Yorker and his book was recalled for unsold copies of the book and e-book sales were suspended. All books that Lehrer had published where then place under internal review.
In this project, I am supposed to create my “spirit animal” using personified animals and colors that reflect who I am and at the same time using the new shading and drawing techniques I learned. To create this project took weeks of preparation and months of hard work. I prepared for this project by analyzing other artist’s works to learn more about symbolism, grasped how to shade and put my ideas onto paper using lines, feathers, dots, light transitioning, and multiple other applications. Nicknamed “The Semester of The Never Ending Project,” this drawing required rough drafts, perfecting rough drafts, critiques, applying and synthesizing my new skills, reflecting, redoing, and discovering how to approach my overall finished product. Through this project, I developed my knowledge and understanding of visual arts practices and philosophies, strengthened my capacity for creative thinking, learned how to apply various artistic skill-sets that allows my ideas come to life, and increased my visual and cultural literacy. Not only did I learn from this project that “I feel things deeply,” or that I am an “analytical thinker,” but I saw on a deeper level how I am as a person. I have grown by learning that rather than correct answers and rules prevailing like in a math or science class, it is my own opinion and creation that can be approached through more than one solution and have multiple answers. I have grown an extremely deeper appreciation for art by actually experiencing the range and variety of things I am capable of and capable of feeling. Art has proved to be a new way to say what cannot be said; it has showed me that language and numbers are not the limits of a human’s perception. Overall, this project helped me see that art covers a multitude of perspectives and helped me see that small differences do make big effects. After this
“The desire to create is one of the deepest yearnings of the human soul.” said Dieter F. Uchtdorf. For as long as I can remember I’ve felt most at peace when I’m being creative. When I look back at pictures from my childhood a majority of them are of me rather painting, coloring, or making play houses out of old cardboard boxes. It was never something I thought much about except that it was just what I always enjoyed doing. So many aspects of my life have changed since I was just a toddler but, my creativity is one aspect that has never left my life.
In the video “A Changing Culture of Creativity” by Howard Gardner, Gardner discusses the evolution; one could also say the possible devolution, of creativity in the world today and why we need to change the way we analyze. He points out that many young people have become followers in todays ever-changing technological world as opposed to the pioneers of creativity, like those we have seen in the past. Creativity needs to be nurtured and it must we must harness the use of the technology that connects us to do so.
