Ethics and Morals play an important role in the nursing profession; nurses are confronted with choices to make every day, and some of them more challenging than others. Ethics are affirmations between what it can be right or erroneous. For our society ethics is presented as a complex system of principles and beliefs. This system serves as an approach with the purpose of ensuring the protection of each individual within the society. On the other hand, morals are basic standards between what is right or wrong; each individual learns to identify these standards during the early stages of human development (Catalano, 2009). A person with morals is usually somebody who recognizes how to respond to the needs of another individual by giving care and keeping a level of responsibility while giving this care (Catalano, 2009).

Codes of ethics contain a coherent set of normative principles underlying a nurse’s purpose and associated values (Vanlaere and Gastmans, 2007). Two perspectives of ethics are the ethics of justice and the ethics of care (Botes, 2000). The ethics of justice constitutes an ethical perspective in terms of which ethical decisions are made on the basis of universal principles and rules, and in an impartial and verifiable manner with a view to ensuring the fair and equitable treatment of all people (Botes, 2000). The ethics of care, on the other hand, constitutes an ethical approach in terms of which involvement, harmonious relations and the needs of others play an important part in ethical decision making in each ethical situation (Botes, 2000).

Ethics is essential in nursing, in all practices, specialties, and in all settings. The patients place their confidence in nurses to practice ethically since their life is technically in their hands. Ethics is the moral principle that governs an individual’s or group's behavior. Everyday nurses encounter challenging ethical dilemmas in providing care for their patients. Some of the challenging dilemmas include providing care that will prolong life but decrease quality of life, euthanasia, whether to break confidentiality to provide care for a patient, stem cell research, etc. Currently, ethical decisions in the nursing profession and health care are becoming more complex. Due to this change nurses today require advanced problem solving ability and critical thinking skills to deal with ethical issues.

When looking at nursing values in regard to the subject ethics, nurses are expected to develop the values that are mainly aimed at providing care to the patients based on ethical grounds. They are supposed to have the right ethical knowledge that will enable them administer their function in an appropriate manner. Being that nursing as a profession, is charged with the clinical duty, the subject practitioners who are the nurses, should also develop those values that provide special care to the patients who deserve to be given the best of care. The nurses are expected to work based on the values that they have selected (Bush 2007). These values should form a framework that evaluates their activities and even influencing their goals, strategies and function. The nursing values can therefore be counted as necessary resources for conduct in relation to clinical ethical competency and therefore confrontation with contemporary ethical concerns.
