Throughout the history of sports concussions have been a problem, however it has only been recently that the dangers of concussions have been brought to light. Concussions have a serious effect on the brain both short term and long term. A concussion is a temporary loss of brain function usually resulting from a mild injury to the brain or head (“Concussion”). Some of the most-common causes of concussion include motor-vehicle accidents, bicycle accidents, falls, and sports-related injuries. During the accidents, any type of straight contact to the head or just the movement of the body that transmits force upwards will usually lead to a concussion. During a concussion, many things happen to the brain. When the brain and a object with force collide, the brain is pushed against the inside of the skull and can be bruised. Some you can see from the stands, and some no one may ever know about. Scientist want to crack down on concussions and understand the intensities of the impacts the players take. This information is crucial for scientist to know if they want to help athletes recover faster and protect themselves. Scientist have spent this past decade studying animals for clues about the changes that take place in the brain. Researchers are hoping that new studies and techniques will one day improve physician’s ability to recognize people who need more time to recover from a concussion, and provide clues and findings about the relationship between concussions and the deterioration of the brain. Scientist are coming together with coaches and trainers to invent and try new things that can protect a player and prevent concussions. For example, football helmets.
