The artist talk that I ended up going to was Teju Cole. Teju was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Nigerian parents, and is the oldest of four children. He shortly moved back to Nigeria but returned to the states for college. He is an American writer, photographer, and art historian. I’ve been to a few artist talks before and I really like how he approached it. A few photographers that I’ve seen in the past will usually just pull up some of the photos they’ve taken and talk about them. Teju however, would tell a story from one of his books and then present a photo. I found this very interesting because as he was telling the story I would try and picture it in my head. Sometimes the photo he would show would similar to what I was thinking but
In chapter 22, the Andrew Mcbride is in search of his Jewish roots not just his black ones, he wants to tell his wife and children about it and for them to have pride in who they are. That being said, James is back in Suffolk in the year 1992, trying to get into the synagogue where the Shilskys had once worshipped. In this chapter, James by now has searched for all types of records of his Jewish family. For example, he says “ I had spent considerable time looking for school records, court records, and other documents with mixed results”(McBride 172) James met instead with man named Aubrey Rubenstein, whose father had taken over his grandfather’s store when Ruth's father left town. Aubrey used James's tape recorder to send a greeting to Ruth,
However, our trip did not last countless hours as I looked over 30 paintings in about twenty five minutes. This was not due to my lack of interest, but more to my novice mindset towards art. Art is similar to most skill activities in that people that are active in said activity can better understand and articulate the small actions that lead to a great piece of art, a great football play, or a great movie. I am embarrassed to say that I did not pay close enough attention to the intricacies of my dad's art, but I accepted to write these articles in hopes I could learn more about my dad's favorite past time.
the death of his grandfather, his mother has to sell the ranch that he lived
d to support the Lapham Johnny worked hard.As Johnny was a arrogant and overly proud person ,Mr. Lapham made sure that Johnny read bibles verses so that he can become less proud and he should not be too pride but responsible and loyal to others. This book teaches that life can be an full of ups and downs depending on the person. There are time when humiliation and shame get to Johnny when he almost loss his hands but driven to exception he was able to over come the humiliation and became brave and humble natured toward motivating himself to learn how to write and ride a horses.
I prefer you start by asking me questions, so I can get in the mood because I don’t feel ready for […] I can tell you about my life and about how the whole art thing started. When I was fourteen years old I suffer an attack on my spine. When I was a boy, a draw a lot, but they were mostly school-related. I show them my work in L.A. [Los Angeles] because they liked a lot there. I lived next to a Mexican neighborhood. What was its name? “Maravilla”, it was very dangerous. The pachucos of that time lived
Travis Roy’s presentation was one for the books. His story is inspiring, motivating, and touching. After listening to him talk, I realized just how blessed I am. I have a healthy, capable body that allows me to do pretty much whatever I want. What stood out to me the most of Travis’ presentation was his positive attitude. Even though he had been paralyzed, he made the best of it. He challenged all of us in the room to have a positive attitude no matter what we were going through. Someone always has it worse. A positive attitude can go a long way, without someone even realizing it. Travis pointed out how if he had not chosen to look at the bright side of things, he would be living a very sad, unfulfilling life. Life is all about the mindset
Johnny Tremain is the orphaned apprentice of a silversmith in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1773, a time of tension and uncertainty. He is the nephew of a very wealthy and powerful merchant named Jonathan Lyte, but that is a secret only known to Mr. Lapham’s daughter Priscilla. Before his mother died, she entrusts him with her christening cup, which proves his relation to the Lyte family, but she warns him never to go to his uncle, unless “God Himself has forsaken you.” When Johnny breaks the Sabbath while trying to fulfill an order his old master was not able to complete, he ends up burning his hand. After the accident, he is unable to move his right hand, and, therefore, he is no longer wanted as an apprentice. Since he cannot find a job,
Would you accept a hard, tedious job working for a wealthy man, who wanted his order to be perfect? In the book Johnny Tremain, Johnny had to make this very decision. Johnny should not have agreed to make the silver basin for John Hancock for three convincing explanations: The order needed to be perfect, It was a very tough job, and Johnny might not finish it in time.

In many of Thomas Cole’s pictures he depicts the mountains as wells as a river next to it. In this picture it shows the right side being bright and light and the left being darker which gives a viewer some sort of meaning such as past and future. Cole believed art was more than a picture but words a whole story to inspire many of more artists after him. A painting of Northampton Massachusetts after a storm and the day clears up. The landscape of America has a by encompassing a union of the picturesque.
“Writers and travelers are mesmerized alike by knowing of their destinations,” (Welty 44). These words written by Eudora Welty are relatable to me because I understand the awe and mesmeration that writers and travelers feel by knowing of their destinations. This is true when talking about a long car ride to a favorite vacation spot. In the car, you are constantly dreaming about your destination and counting down the hours til you get there. I love to create art and to paint, so this quote is relatable in this aspect because at the beginning of a work of art you have a vision of the final product, of your destination. Throughout the whole process, you work toward creating this finished piece that you’ve envisioned from the beginning. Finally,
One example of people must forgive in order to be happy is when Cole finally forgives his mom. He realizes that his mother does love him and quits drinking. She apologizes for the abuse he has gone through and not have tried to stop it. She wants to start a new life with Cole. She visits him in the hospital after the spirit bear attack, but also during his second stay on the island she writes him frequently and expresses her care and concern. Cole chooses forgiveness and grows to love his mother, even hugging her warmly when he is able to after he is released from the hospital. This shows that Cole’s ability to forgive and move on results in him feeling more secure and is a major first step to him letting go of the anger that has imprisoned
I think Cole is changing because of three different reasons. He is learning how he can't control everything just like how he couldn't control the storm. He is also learning that being afraid of someone or something is a normal thing. For example, when he sees the bear, he trembles with helplessness. Cole is just not afraid of the bear but also afraid of dying. The last thing is that Cole is starting to feel sympathy towards others. For example, when the sparrows were dying, he was actually starting to care and feel unhappy for them. These are some of the reasons why I think Cole is changing.
The two works of art that I have chosen to analyze are 1) Jordan Casteel. Miles and JoJo. 2014. Oil on canvas, 54” x 72” and 2) Aaron Fowler. He Was. 2015. Mixed media, 134” x 165” x 108”. The themes that these works of art represent in regards to the exhibit are love, family, and pain. However, they also fall into other thematic categories. The main theme that seems to apply to both “Miles and JoJo” and “He Was” is Human Experience. Additionally, these arts differ in some ways.
“The Comfort of Cole Haans,” by Henry Meyerson, is a comedy drama describing an issue of men’s preference for apparel. The situation happens in the house where Joe urges his wife, Karen not to be late for a dinner appointment with his parents. Tactlessly, Joe did not notice that Karen has problem finding her shoe which makes Karen more enraged. After limping around, she eventually makes him realize that her wife has lost her shoe. Surprisingly, Joe appears to know where the shoe is and brings it back to her. Karen starts questioning this peculiar circumstance until Joe reluctantly admits that he has been wearing her personal items since she left him for a business trip. After hearing that, Karen astonishingly shows no anger yet is somehow perplexed.
