A Teaching Assistant, as the name suggests, is there to help pupils achieve results whilst attending school. This is where the most differences in roles can be seen. The primary objective of a teaching assistant is to support the school by carrying out a variety of tasks in order to create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment thus allowing teachers more time to focus on teaching. It is therefore paramount to remain flexible at all times. The purpose of this essay is to summarise the major learning points from the Teaching Assistant Diploma Course. I will address the nine subject areas separately.

There are lots of different ways to teach and the way you teach should depend on the way your students learn. Some children are kinaesthetic learners so they like to learn by doing, this could be by moving around, handling objects and a way to do this is to get them to physically reorder objects which helps set it in their minds. Others like to learn visually. You can watch video clips and maybe a few shows (related to the topic) and ask them to answer questions about what they observe in the video. There are also some kids who are auditory learners who like to learn by listening and taking notes. This could be you standing at the front of the classroom or it could be listening to audio tapes and taking notes down from them.

Prepare for lesson/ program ensuring that you have relevant materials to carry out different teaching styles to meet the needs of the learner,

My other responsibilities include introducing new material into each session and evaluating each session individually either by tests, question and answer sessions or by setting homework. After each session I reflect on whether the lesson was appropriate to the learning and if the students digested the information put across in the session, if not, I should be prepared to make adjustments to make sure that the information is understandable in the future. It is my responsibility to be professional in my approach, encouraging, understanding and trustworthy. To put the progress, well-being and development of my students first, make sure that everyone is included and feels part of the group.

Assuring and maintaining and educational qualities,the role emphasises the responsibility of a teacher to establish and sustain the content of education at a higher level and good quality. The teacher is expected to provide trustworthy and reliable information about the learning,teacher listens to,and respond to student’s views about quality. I will add a strategy to the lesson to promote learning. I will add questioning to the group work and the Power Point activities to promote higher level thinking skills. This will allow students to think about their answer and explain why they think it is correct. They will also be able to ask one another and the teacher questions to clarify information.

The first step in developing a lesson plan is to determine what students should learn and be able to do at the end of class. Teachers should define what the lesson’s topic is going to be, what tangible skills should be acquired and what intangible knowledge should be learned. Once these goals are defined, rank them by importance. This helps with managing time and focuses on the most important learning objectives. Objectives should incorporate state standards into the curriculum at every possible opportunity. Lesson plan objectives should be measurable and achievable. It may help to think about how students may potentially apply the most important ideas or skills in their daily lives.

My role in the school as a Teaching Assistant for Year 2 is very exciting and supportive. I was helping the students who were weak in reading, writing , spelling, and maths and also assist other children in the class during the lesson. To start, I have to say that something that I could realize during this practicum was the idea that no matter how much you prepare your lesson plan, it would not be as you was expecting, that is the reason why we as teachers should be prepared for each anticipated problem that we could face, and of course plan anticipated solutions for having a successful class. Besides, I learn that if you are teaching children, you need motivating activities, like painting, drawing, worming up activities for maintaining student’s attention, also if you want that students do not feel demotivated for the fact that they do not know English, they need to feel motivation trough English activities although they do understand everything that you say. Additionally, I learn from this experience that no matter how many times you say the classroom rules to students, when they are decentralized they do not remember at all the classroom rules that you state. To conclude, have prepared solutions for the anticipated problems that you can face in your teaching and have motivating activities to increase interest in English classes are the points that I will consider for next practicum
