After reading all the fables in Aesop’s Fables, There are three fables impresses me most. The first one is The Mountain in Labor. Nevertheless, my opinion is different from that of the allegory. As far as I’m concerned, preparing well before a coming calamity is better than doing nothing and just waiting. Taking the agitated mountain for example, loud groans and noises were heard from the mountain in labor and crowds of people came from all parts to see what the matter was. The mouse coming out of the mountain is the cause. Nevertheless, I think the people’s behavior is right and reasonable. What if they all had paid no attention to the strange mountain in labor? Indeed, there is no calamity but just a mouse. However, what if there had been a disaster such as earthquake? We cannot predict what will happen the next moment and we are not always lucky. What we should do is to prepare well and act when there is an omen, but not just think that do not make much ado about nothing. It is not a waste of time but protection for people against being ruined. The fable reminds me of the earthquake which happened in Tangshan, Hebei about forty years ago. Unlike the people living around the agitated mountain in the fable, people in Tangshan paid no attention to the strange things such as the agitated livestock and the well appearing cracks which were omens of the disaster in which a lot of people died in sleep. As far as I am concerned, the people could have protected themselves from the earthquake if they had paid attention to the obvious omens of the disaster. However, it is because they thought it did not matter that the earthquake caused the death of so many people. There is no doubt that the death toll would have been decreased if more people had attached importance to those obvious omens. That is to say, we should learn that preparing and acting when an omen appears is better than doing nothing but just waiting. The truth can also apply to our daily life. What will you do when you are faced with some abnormal things in your life? Will you pay attention to them or do just like the word “Don’t make much ado about nothing”? In my opinion, we should prepare regardless of the things indicating what is likely to happen
In Homer’s Odyssey, Odysseus transitions into manhood after enduring a grueling journey back to Ithaka. One observes his valor and courageousness being put to the test and sees how he gains a new understanding of what it means to be a man after tragically losing what he values most. To illustrate this, Homer offers the following simile: “[…] as when a man, who well understands the lyre and singing, easily, holding it on either side, pulls the strongly twisted cord of sheep’s gut, so as to slip it over a new peg, so without any strain, Odysseus strung the great bow,” (21.406-9). Homer contradicts the graceful precision of the lyre with the barbaric twisting of the cord of a sheep’s gut in order to allude to Odysseus’s triumph over the
Our world is constantly moving, changing, evolving. We are all sorrowed by exceptional situations that impact our decisions. Those decisions will conduct to maybe bigger or smaller scenarios, but what is the right route to take? That is the real question.
In today’s world people make a common mistake by making comparisons with the Bible and Aesop’s Fables. In the Bible it is important to which is emphasized more, law or grace. It is just as important to do the same in Aesop’s Fables. Very often a mistake is easily made in reading Jesus’s Parables. Understanding the emphasis of law and grace in both the Bible and Aesop’s Fables and realizing mistakes we make with reading Jesus’s parables can help with reading the parables
Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey translated by Robert Fagles completely illustrate Odysseus’s journey home after The Trojan War. Separated into twenty-four different books, the poem describes the hardships Odysseus faces and how he overcomes obstacles. Though this poem is composed for listeners and may seem incomprehensible, Homer includes a plethora of literary devices to help audiences better understand, follow, and enjoy the context of The Odyssey. Throughout this poem instances of epic simile, foreshadowing, epithet, and xenia are included to help the poem flow.
Life flips itself upside down by someone hearing or seeing a seemingly irrelevant thing. One person’s small action greatly impacts someone else. One thing leads to another, and because of something small, the current world changes. Kristallnacht, during WWII, remains as an excellent example of this. An assassination leads to this horrendous night, which in turn leads to a rise in anti-semitic behaviors.
When responding to situations in life people must consider if doing so will benefit themselves or the people around them. In circumstances that demand quick thinking people often can not form a concrete decision based on how little information and time they have. In life people frequently must try to do so through their daily battles with the people around them as well as themselves.
The book is written exceptionally well and is very easy to follow. With an overwhelming amount of evidence and an incisive argument, Steinberg is able to skew the focus from a political agenda and powerfully raise questions in the mind of the reader. Steinberg brings light to the widely overlooked aspect of human influence with regard to natural disasters. The research presented is able to effects show the effects this neglect of information has had on an overwhelming number of poor victims. This book is a valuable read and presents numerous issues that need to be brought to the attention of both national and local officials. As stated by Oxford University Press, “Acts of God is a call to action that needs desperately to be
Homeric or epic similes can be found all throughout The Odyssey written by Homer. A simile is the comparison of two unlike objects using like or as. Homer’s similes are considered to be “epic” because of how elaborate they are to help the audience “feel” and picture a scene. One of the most glorified scenes in The Odyssey, full of epic similes, is when Odysseus stabs the eye of Cyclops Polyphemus. As soon as Polyphemus fell asleep from the over-consumption of wine, Odysseus put his plan into motion to escape the Cyclops’ cave. Courage took over Odysseus and Homer writes:
Some times warning isn’t enough because of peoples different circumstances and beliefs they might not leave. One example is in Columbia in 1985 where they where warned but didn’t listen as they didn’t think they would be affected and didn’t trust the people telling them. About 20,000 people are feared dead after a volcanic eruption in northern Colombia. Four towns in the Andes region are reported to have been buried when ash spewed out of the volcano, Nevado del Ruiz, causing a mudslide. These people weren’t told to evacuate until 2 hours before the major eruption casing massive loss of life. The reason for this late call was because the country didn’t trust the people observing the volcano this meant the potential hazard was far greater then it should have been ad the results where horrific. This is one example of how poor education and different situation can greatly increase the hazard.
I will argue that we may view the woman as representative of Odysseus’ grief in his moment of pity and pain, the simile in its entirety may be regarded as analogous to a potential future for his own oikos. Should he fail to return home or succeed to return only to deceit and demise, Odysseus will initiate the splintering of his home into the rabid hands of the suitors. The simile shifts from referring solely to Odysseus to encompass the possible fate of his entire household. This promotes the idea that this hero reaps what he sows for, as the perpetrator of like monstrosity, he faces the tragedy of a future akin to that of his own surviving victims.
The purpose of this paper is to provide a review about the Aesop's fables which are now considered as
Homer uses stylistic and narrative features to construct interesting and diverse female characters in his epic poem ‘The Odyssey’. In the United States, there are several problems occurring, but people would rather go on with their lives as if everything is fine .Being unaware of distressing circumstances is less arduous than being aware. But being aware allows one to adjust, because if people are knowledgeable than they are able to prevent or control the situation.
When a person gets that “gut feeling” that something just isn’t right, it should never be ignored. Our natural human intuition is giving us that “gut feeling” for a reason. And that sensation of danger can save lives. One example of how human intuition works was given in the book; a man walked into a convenience store, had a gut feeling he needed to get out of there, left, and found out later that day the convenience store had been robbed and the cashier had been shot and killed. This seemingly random feeling of danger that spared this mans life was not random at all. His intuition let him know to have fear because the cashier looked as if he was fearful when the man walked into the store and also there was a second nervous looking customer wearing a long concealing jacket while it was hot outside. His intuition let him know that there was a potentially dangerous situation even if he wasn’t looking for the signs that were there. This applies to my life because everybody can experience these “gut feelings” from human intuition; I know now to act upon them and to never ignore them because they have the capability to save your life.
This book is important to our society and culture because it shows that we should always appreciate, what we have before it is gone and how we should always be prepared for a disaster. This is demonstrated multiple times, by the protagonist, Alex, that was a moody teenager that didn’t care about his parents and sister, he didn’t ever pay attention to his mom and her reprimands. In when the eruption of the volcano occurred, Alex was left fighting for his life and remembering taking everything for granted. For example, his family, water, light and stableness. This book is also important because it shows we should always be prepared for a disaster in life. Therefore, we as a society should always have knowledge over protecting ourselves and taking
