Question #2 Study and New Therapy Technique and Possible Confounds in the Study While reading the description of the study, one can easily identify various confounds within. First, the study that lasted for 9 months and had initially 50 participants had no control group. In any experimental research design, the need in two or more groups, from which one is the “control” group, is necessary to have a valid research conclusion. Next, what is the definition of depression in the study? And who determined whether these 50 participants had the given condition: was it a requirement to have a licensed physician diagnosing them with the condition or the participant had to just identify himself/herself with being depressed? Third, while there were 50 participants in the beginning and by the end of the study only 29 remained, from which 85% demonstrated some improvement, does it mean the other 21 participants that dropped from the study had their condition worsened?
Question #4 External and Internal Validity Internal validity. According to Cosby (Cosby, 2012), internal validity “is the ability to draw conclusions about causal relationships from the result of the study” (Cosby, 2012, p. 85).
Strong internal validity for any research requires an analysis of three factors: (1) before starting the research; the investigator must make sure that there are temporal precedents. The researcher must demonstrate that the cause
In reviewing this article, this writer was able critique the study and the suitability that it can possess if applied to actual practice. An important factor on whether a study can be considered valuable is if it is transferable in other situation, that is, a study's results should also be reflective if duplicated on other samples (Polit & Beck, 2006). Thus, the statistical power, internal and external validity are important to observe and note (Polit & Beck). If this writer were to carry out this study, it would have to be reflective of how the researcher performed it originality.
External validity is when research findings are applied to the real world. When looking at 19-21 year olds on a college campus, we need to study a broad range of individuals coming from different cultures and backgrounds. We also need to look at which situations these are being applied to such as where they are there drinking habits taking place.
There is no change in the mean baseline and posttest depression scores and it was the similar. As the depression result didn’t change as stated in the hypothesis, it is an unexpected finding. That is why the scores weaken the validity of the research result as scores neither improved nor go down.
4. What is more important in an experimental study, designing the study in order to make strong internal validity claims or strong external validity claims? Why?
While the methodology of the research seemed solid, there were factors which were out of the control of the researchers which made the process more difficult to verify. Because the researchers chose a public web forum, they were unable to verify the legitimacy
Now, it is time to give an overview of some of the design threats to construct validity. If the researcher did not define the construct efficiently than it can lead to the inadequate preoperational explication of constructs threat (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008). Next, is the mono-operation bias, which is the use of the study program only one time and one place (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008). Third, the mono-method bias is the use of any one measure or observation (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008). Finally, the confounding constructs and the levels of constructs threat (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008). Overall, this threat to construct validity is a labeling issue like some of the other threats to construct validity (Trochim & Donnelly, 2008). However, there are more design threats than listed in this paper to construct
Interrogating construct validity, how well the variables in the study were manipulated and measured, is also essential when dealing with causal claims (Morling, 2012). Again, because so little information from the methods section was addressed in Bergland's (2014) article, readers cannot validate the construct validly of the study. It would have been
2. Discuss the generalizability and validity of the study. For example, will findings of this study generalize to other people and/or situations, can we generalize from the study participants to the general population, and do the methods employed have validity?
Two limitations I found were, the small sample size and the potential for reinforcement acting as an underlying variable. The initial sample size was small (30) and after various participant reasons for invalid completion the sample size ended with only 15 fully completing the final evaluation. This is a pretty small sample size and further studies should be completed with a larger sample size. A second weakness I found in the study was the potential presence of reinforcement acting as an underlying variable. The participants received a cash equivalent upon completion, a potential total payment of $300. Parents and CI trainers were also encouraged and educated on the importance of reinforcement and praise. Along with this student are engaging in a structured social activity once a week. These various factors could potentially play a role in the improvement of depression. Potentially reporting, monitoring, or controlling for these factors can increase the strength of this study. In conclusion, I thought this was a good read and the study showing promising results. Further randomized clinical trials should take place with hopes towards a non-medication
Since it is a topic that lately has been of hot debate on the news and articles found within the internet, in the future I would spread this study to different ranges of groups such as adolescent males, adult men and females and even children that are younger than adolescents because depression is not found within just one specific age group. I would do this so the study can highlight more of how exercise affects depression within a typical population. As well I would split the participants of a future study into more than two groups, around possibly four in total. By adding two more groups of different exercise intensities, this can help us predict if higher levels of exercise intensity make a bigger difference or be less beneficial compared to the normal physical exercise program that was conducted over a 8 week time frame originally. I would continue to keep the control group in order to have it be used as a comparison. My big question next would be, “Are there any other variables that would be as or more helpful to combat depression instead of
Validity. The author of this paper considers Article B valid because of the strong external validity that it demonstrates. According to Polit and Beck (2017), replication is an essential concept of external validity. The systematic
The effective approach of long-term treatment is the basis of the study. A major piece of the adolescent substance and psychiatric disorders reduction could be attributed to residential treatment. The collaborating variables in the study are based on demographic and the extension of the severity of the substance abuse and scale of the disorders.
Extensive research, the process of which was documented, and good sourcing of statements. This encourages reliability. It also assesses the strengths and limitations of the studies mentioned; substantiated opinion.
The Transpersonal theory has evolved over the past two decades, driving the desire to learn more about the higher self. “A person doesn’t have to be sick in order to get better” (Tuner, 2011, p.551,) The history and development will be discussed within the essay. Central ideas of treatment approach will be included. Strengths and weaknesses of the Transpersonal Theory within social work will be addressed in great detail. There will be an assessment of a case and the client within the micro system. The major goals and expected outcomes within the micro system will be listed. To help understand how practitioner work with clients the intervention techniques will be addressed. To give a holistic view of the Transpersonal Theory the ethical issues implicit in the approach will be stated. Finally, the application of professional self, and the use of the model with the micro system.
Therapy is the treatment of people who are suffering from the psychological problem and that situation, the therapist works in collaboration with the patient, to determine the cause. This paper seeks to explore the two types of therapy which person-centered therapy and gestalt therapy. The paper will also go into details by comparing and contrasting the two therapies and how they work.
