Statement of Purpose

Environmental issues are not restricted to specific regions, but are global and this makes tackling them even more difficult. Problems such as rising pollution levels, climate change phenomena and resource depletion threaten to ruin our future if unchecked. Water, soil and air pollution have been responsible for many illnesses and fatalities all over the world. It has been estimated that approximately 12.6 million people died as a result of living or working in unhealthy environments. Access to safe and clean energy is another challenge the world is facing today. Many rural regions in India and many other countries still lack access to usable energy. Since my early days in college, I have made an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of these problems. My love and passion for the environment grew as I kept learning and as a student of engineering, I was determined to come up with solutions to these environmental challenges. This is what drove me towards the field of Environmental Engineering.

I hope you are well. I have been working on my graduate school statement of purpose over the last few days, and I was hoping you might be willing to look over it. I am contacting you because your comments on my personal statement over the summer were very helpful, and I know that as Director of Graduate Studies you read these types of statements frequently. I am not sure if I am on the right track and so this very rough draft may not be what they are looking for as a statement of purpose. We are not short of hearing about the significance in creating goals, merely having a vision is enough to steer someone into a reality long imaged. Long before The Secret and vision boards, I read Gloria Steinman’s book, A Revolution Within. She postulates imagining meeting oneself in the future. I have visualized a young vibrant, powerful woman with a number pinned on her chest, her face chafed from the wind, triumphantly passing the finish line.

My determination to overlook the lack of financial help that would be available to me due to being undocumented, inspired me to achieve academic excellence throughout high school. I am a motivated student always eager to learn new things. Being able to work picking blueberries and cherries aside my parents, made me appreciate the sacrifices my parents made by coming to this country in order to improve my education. I want to continue my education however possible, but with my parents helping my sister pay for college, with my brother planning to attend college, and my father sending money to Mexico to help pay for my grandma’s medications, money is not readily available. It is difficult to not worry about paying for college, however, I am determined

There comes a time where the bird must “leave the nest,” and that time has come around faster than I could have imagined. One day it was playing outside in the dirt and the next we’re graduating from high school, entering a world that we are hopefully prepared for. I’ve always been one for self-doubting, especially since I would be the first in my family to go to college. I want to further my interests with the education available and achieve the most I can for myself but also for my family.

Growing up, having a sporting background has given me knowledge in both the physical and practical aspects of sport and this has made me decide to apply for a course in sport related degree with confidence and excitement.

The backdrop of my early childhood differed from most, having moved to Lagos from Illinois after the death of my father, it was common to see despair and extreme poverty. I was always in shock and awe of the living conditions that so many were faced with on a daily basis, including the limited resources that were essential for everyday life and overall well-being.

Statement of Problem/Objectives – the nature & scope of the problem should be presented with clarity. Two types of objectives maybe stated:

A personal mission statement is a philosophy or creed that one plans to follow in daily life. It is usually designed with positivity, purpose, and with personal goals for every aspect of life such as career, finances, etc. It also focuses on personality traits that one would like to possess and the accomplishments that one wants to achieve, both short-term and long term. It also houses the individuality of the person writing it. Every person writing a personal mission statement is will produce a different statement. This is primarily because people value different things, characteristics and have different goals. The purpose of this paper is to explore my mission statement (Covey, 2013, pp.113).
