Teachers teach based on what resources are provided or what they can purchase or locate to assist in learning. Some contents have textbooks or consumables that are aligned with the state standards. This is not always the case. Some school have no textbook due to funding or students have to share the limited resources. With the continued changed in education, additional resources are sometimes needed to supplement instruction. “There is a belief among some that additional resources play no role in producing better-educated students” (Darling-Hammond, 2012, p. 101). This comes with some people believing that what the school provides for instruction is sufficient. I disagree with this statement because what is provided does not always provide the best opportunity for learning. Case and point, Texas added standards for mathematics in grades K-8 during the summer of 2014 (Texas Education Agency, 2015). The school of assignment was provided with a new mathematic consumable and online resource to aid in the teaching of the new content. …show more content…

This requires teachers to provide complex and real application lessons. Financial literacy was added to mathematics and the need for real-world activities was a must. The book helped students understand how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide, but failed to show how it really works when shopping from a grocery ad or purchasing a home of which they had to understand property taxes. Students had to answer word problems about shopping for items at stores, but the textbook did not come with store ads. Almost every Wednesday, students in my math class worked on real-world activities to connect the textbook instruction to how to apply to life and answer the word problems. Many of my students who scored low on the independent practice from the textbook, scored higher on work after practicing skills with real-world activities. The resources used were in addition to the
