I attended the NIU Women’s Basketball game against Ball State. This game was part of the Play 4kay cancer organization game. Kay Yow was created on honor for Coach Yow, who had a “vision to unite a nation of coaches, players, and the women’s basketball community to do something for the greater good that far exceeds wins and losses on the court.”(Womack). During this game everyone had pink on from the players to the coaches. NIU’s full uniform was pick while the opponents had pink shoes, their dancer had multiple pink outfits that they changed into. During the time outs and half times they had a lot of activates, golf putting, kids shooting free throw for money donations, cancer survivors acknowledgements, and the NIU dancer performances.
“We Got Next”. This phrase is most commonly used around the asphalt when vying to play the next game of pick up basketball. Founded on April 24, 1996, the NBA Board of Governors approved the concept of a Women’s National Basketball Association. The Women’s National Basketball Association is the most prevalently known professional basketball league in the United States for women, most commonly referred to as its’ acronym WNBA. It was finally the ladies’ turn as they made their statement that they would be playing the next game. The first season for the Women’s National Basketball Association began in 1997. Sheryl Swoopes, one of the league’s first sixteen players, was the first player signed by the WNBA on October 23, 1996. She signed with the Houston Comets, one of the eight teams in the
Most of our youth playing AAU basketball have the dream or drive of playing at the next level. The next level could be college or professional; the idea is that playing in more tournaments will increase your exposure to scouts. European and players born outside of the U.S. have been a steady addition to professional basketball in the US. San Antonio Spurs coach Greg Popovich prefers the European player because they are, "fundamentally harder working than most American kids (Wickersham, 2013)." The image below shows the Spurs championship roster from 2014 and the balance of European to American players. The Spurs have won 5 NBA championships since 1999, which is tied with the Los Angeles Lakers over the same period for most in basketball.
It is the state championship game and your team has rose up from the bottom of the ranks. Even though you are the underdog, your team has pushed through any obstacles that were thrown in your way. You are much smaller than the number one team in the state, but you still find a way to keep the game tied. You are the senior quarterback and it would mean everything if you won. The fans are all in the stands screaming and you smile as you take in your last experience under the Friday night lights. There are two minutes left in the second half and the ball gets snapped on the third down at the 20 yard line. You catch the ball and look around frantically. All of your receivers are covered and you decide you have to run, but before you can move, a 300 pound linebacker slams you to the ground. A flag is thrown, but it is too late, everything goes black, after a few seconds, you regain sight, but you are still in a daze. You slowly stand up, but fall over immediately. You have a few seconds to rest while the ref is checking on you, your head is pounding as you feel the concussion, but you want to keep playing. Your coach leaves it up to you, and you step back out onto the field. You are now at the 15 yard line and the ball is snapped. You make eye contact with your wide receiver and pass the ball, it sails through the air. As you watch it leave your hand, you see the same linebacker out of the corner of your eye. Everything goes black again, but this time you don’t wake up. This
The University of Oklahoma is a four year Division 1 public university located in Norman, Oklahoma, and is home to the Sooners; “Boomer Sooner”. The University of Oklahoma’s Womens Softball team won the 2015 Women’s College Softball World Series, and their football team is ranked 1st in the Big 12 rankings. Kansas State University is a four year Division 1 public university located in Manhattan, Kansas, and is home to the Wildcats; “EMAW - Every Man A Wildcat”. Kansas State University has just recently added a new Women’s Soccer program! I have a 3.4 GPA, I participate in Link Crew which is a program offered at Campus High School that helps with freshman orientation, and basically helps many different freshmen sculpt/decide the path’s for their futures based on their decisions now in high school. I have played soccer for 13 years, and am currently playing club soccer at Sedgwick County Soccer Association for the ‘99 Wichita Cheetahs Elite, and I also play on the girls Varsity soccer team at Campus High School. Kansas State University is a better choice and fit because it is in-state, there are many degrees, and options to choose from, the acceptance rate is higher than the University of Oklahoma’s, and there are minimal standards on applying/enrollment requirements, and there are ways to earn many scholarships whether it be through academic scholarships or earning it through athletics, and the tuition and
The Women’s National Basketball Association, more commonly known as the WNBA, is a professional basketball league consisting of 12 teams spanning across the United States. The league was founded in 1996 but didn’t officially kick off until 1997. While it’s not the first major women’s professional basketball league in the United States, the WNBA is the only league that has received full backing from the National Basketball Association, more commonly, the NBA. Now in its 20th season under the direction of league president Lisa Borders, the regular season is played from June to September with the playoffs spanning through the remainder of September into the middle of October. Although they have the full backing from the NBA, there are still a few discrepancies between the two leagues. Even though WNBA games are not as exciting as NBA games, the players of the WNBA deserve equal pay because the team mindset makes the game more challenging, players continue to show their hard work in the offseason by playing overseas, and they inspire young girls by providing for charities as a result of their work.
Although some think the decision to go to the National Basketball Association should be solely in the hands of the players and although current efforts ensure that basketball players are in college for at least one year, the one-and-done rule needs to be revised because it destabilizes the college basketball system, leaves players without a backup plan, and causes players to lack the wisdom to make wise financial and life decisions.
As winter comes to an end and spring approaches, so does the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) March Madness frenzy. Since it's inception in 1939 this tournament has gained increased popularity among gamblers and fans alike to become the second most popular tournament in the US after American football's Super Bowl. Every year the madness begins the second week of March and ends the first week of April. Millions of fans across the states eagerly watch as 68 teams race to win college basketball’s biggest prize. This paper will look closely at two of NCAA Division I teams, the Oklahoma University (OU) Sooners men’s, and the Texas Longhorns (TL) women’s programs. It will first break down the tournament revenue brought in to the
You’re can’t play, you’re just a girl. That’s what they told me when I decided I wanted to play basketball. I didn’t listen. Despite the naysayers I’m going continue doing what something I like and enjoy doing. I would like to attend The Wolfpack Woman’s Basketball camp to better my shooting skills, build my confidence and be a part of a team.
I had attended the basketball game and it was okay. The UWA Women basketball players reigned victory in the game. The game was almost a tie because both teams were trying their best to score points. The Mississippi College is a fierce team, and their determination and confidence motivated them to come closer to victory. Our team also shared the same attributes as well as the opposing team. This was the first sporting event that I have attended since I been here. I know that I should be a little more outgoing, but I am stuck in timid mode. The game would be a little more interesting if I had friends to see it with. I still found this event as a great experience for me. I am interested in various types
On Friday, November 6, 2015, Grace Men’s basketball team had their home game opener against St. Xavier. The game was hosted by the Lancers at the OCC (Orthopaedic Capital Center). The game started at 7pm, the stadium was filled with eager fans. The Lancers came out on top defeating the Cougars 78-65.
Another boring assembly was in the making as I walked into my junior high school gymnasium. My best friend at the time, Kelsey, was very excited because the Valencia high school color guard was going to perform one of their routines in an attempt to get people to join the team. She was already on the guard, hence her motivation to attend this assembly. Before this point, I did not know color guard even existed. According to Kelsey, color guard is a performing art in which a team performs a dance routine centered around the use of flags, rifles, and sabers. Both her insistence and the awe-inspiring performance of the guard moved me to join the team my freshman year of high school. Even though we did not win at championships, it was overall
As a nonprofit the NCAA is often not compared to large companies even it makes comparable revenue. All television and video game revenue, as well as ticket, jersey, and souvenir sales made from college athletics all go to the NCAA, the conferences, the athletic departments, and the coaches. In fact, one study suggests, “Men’s basketball and football combine for $6 billion alone” (Mondello, Piquero, Piquero, Gertz & Bratton, 2013). None of that revenue goes directly to the student athlete even though the NCAA surely has enough money to do so if it chooses. USA Today writer Bruce Horovitz states in his article, March Madness Evokes Marketer Madness that, “The NCAA men’s basketball tournament generated $1.15 billion in television ads in 2013, well beyond the revenue generated by the NFL and NBA playoffs, according to ESPN” (Horovitz, 2014). Marc Edelman, a professor at City University of New York takes it a bit farther in his article The Case for Paying College Athletes, and claims, “The college sports industry generates $11 billion in annual revenues. Fifty colleges report annual revenues that exceed $50 million. Meanwhile, five colleges report annual revenues that exceed $100 million” (Edelman, 2014). In contrast, during the 2014-2015 season the NBA grossed about $5.18 billion in revenues according to Forbes Magazine, which was a league record high. The NCAA revenue money is also not evenly distributed among the schools, as top tiered athletic programs tend to make more money
After the Revolutionary war the United States was at a cross-roads. The American Constitution had been written, and the Federalists were attempting to ratify the Constitution throughout the thirteen States(Bloom, "The Constitution of the United States: Questions and Answers") Those who stood against ratifying the Constitution were known as Anti-Federalists. Whether or not to ratify the constitution was a large manner of debate for many well educated men. George Mason, a Virginian public servant spearheaded the Anti-Federalist movement.(USHISTORY.COM "George Mason"). Mason found several major flaws within the constitution including; The lack of a bill of rights, The fact there was far too much power consolidated within the federal government,
Dedication. Teamwork. Leadership. Success. Those are four traits the U.S. and the 1992 U.S. Men's Olympic Basketball Team, also known as The Dream Team, have in common. Without question, The Dream Team was the best team to ever be assembled in the history of sports and it was created after a devastating third place in the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul. Ready to come back winning, the U.S. compiled eleven all-star NBA players (Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Charles Barkley, etc.) and one college player (Christian Laettner) who is known as the best college basketball player ever.
The uconn Huskies are the most successful women's basketball team in the nation. They have won 11 NCAA Division 1 national championships. They have won 107 games in a row and haven't lost a game since November 17, 2014. The last game they played they won by 56. Also the last game they played Katie Lou scored 40 points and made all of her threes she ended up with 10 threes after the game. They defiantly are not going to lose this season. If they did lose than a lot of people wold be upset cause their winning streak would end. Their coach is Geno Auriemma. The closest game they have played this season they only won by 8. But uconn is defiantly the best women's basketball team in the
