Life is unpredictable and no one could gifted with a foresight. I still remember that day when I boarded the plane, from China to America, up to eighteen hours of travel. I’m a high school senior from a small town in Central Washington. Since I was thirteen years old, I’ve known exactly what I want to do “when I grew up”: I want to become a professor of linguistics at a major research university. I want to research and write papers and teach. Because I have had this answer ready for so long, people started to ask me what I want to specialize in. I’d say that I wasn’t sure, but perhaps an indigenous language family in Central America, because I already spoke Spanish and had studied the culture and politics of the region. Throughout grade school, I struggled with what my future would hold. I had an idea about what I wanted to achieve. For example, I know I did not want to live pay check to pay check, but I didn’t have a clue about how to achieve that. My entire life my mother taught me to work hard for what I wanted, and then I could reap the benefits later. I didn’t want to wait for later. I wanted to have my cake, and eat to. I knew I love books so maybe I could become a writer. The school Counselor suggested I take a career vocational test to determine what would work best for me.

Many people are already thinking about what they want their life to be like in the future. My future begins in college. I’ve been waiting to go to college since middle school. I’m interested in taking anything in the medical field such as nursing, pharmacist, medical technician, etc. I believe this will benefit me, my family, and other people because I want to take care of my family, other patients, and also myself by learning more about health science. To me, successful is happiness, and happiness is not necessarily being wealthy. My happiness is having to help people and also having a family who cares and supports me.

When I was 12 years old, people would always ask me what I wanted to be when I grow up and my answer was always the same; I want to be a professional football player. I was convinced at that age that was what I wanted to be so I trained extremely hard to make that dream come true. I ran extra after practice and worked on speed and agility drills at home to hone my skills. However, when I entered high school, my dream had changed. I no longer enjoyed football and I worried about what I was going to do with the rest of my life. I have always been fascinated with technology and have been curious as to how they function so in my sophomore year of high school, I finally decided that I wanted to be a computer engineer and this time, I will do whatever it takes to make this dream come true.

My future is something I often think about. Most often, the questions that arise include the common doubts of “Am I doing this right?”, or even the occasional midnight philosophical questions such as “Why are we here?”, and so on. For the purpose of this essay, I will focus on the factors that have allowed me to reach this point in my life and how these factors influenced and continue to influence me, in order to provide me with a visualization of my future.
