Madera High is an ordinary high school in a fairly small town of about 60,000 people. Although the usual picture of bullying portrayed in the media does not occur here, there are still other forms of bullying and harassment that happen often. Cyberbullying has become the new form of harassment that teens use to bully other students. Social media is now the platform bullies prefer to use rather than the physical confrontation that bullying used to be. Through recent years, it has become an epidemic that has taken over the internet and social networks. It has made it even harder for students to get away from the bully or the person harassing them. At Madera High the amount of bullying seen at school by other students and staff is fairly low, …show more content…
When in physical education classes the students must change into different cloths. With this comes putting your belongings in a locker that should be fairly secure. There are always a few students who just refuse to leave others and peace and just go about their own day. One of these students happened to be in my physical education class and was threatening to cut people locks and to hurt them. I am larger person for my age so I have never been picked on, but some of the people around me, including a friend of mine, were being harassed. At first I did not think much of it and continued on with my day as usual, but fairly soon the problem started to escalate. I could no longer sit back and let the people around me be victimized by someone who was clearly there just to terrorize other students. After dealing with it for about a day or so, It made me angry enough to do something about it. I was planing on just asking the guy to stop and just leave everyone alone, but things went down a little differently. We got into an argument and I assume that my size intimidated him enough to stop harassing anyone anymore since he ended up not doing it again. The situation was handled fairly quickly, but obviously no administrators were involved, which leads to another serious issue in Madera
One of the grimmest, ongoing issues present within all latter-day educational institutions and public facilities is the problem and complications of a recently reinvigorated phenomenon: bullying. Bullying can be defined—and entails—as any of the broad gamut of aggressive, intimidating, and/or negative behaviours that are expressed on behalf of an individual or group towards one or more other people who consequently experience forms of mistreatment and associated sentiments of pain (this behaviour is generally associated with young adults and children). Albeit many younger students have neglected the genuine importance of this issue as a result of many unrealistic, specious clichés and stereotypes present within the media coupled with feelings of nonchalance and lethargy, the problem of bullying has only been aggravated through the inception of the Internet and the concomitant repercussion of cyberbullying: “2 in 5 parents report their child has been involved in a cyberbullying
We live in a wonderful world of technology, have become a society with the desire for instant gratification, and are a species that is inherently nosy and judgmental. In this new world of information, the desire to conform to the idea of being popular has been pushed to the limits with the help of social media. With the pressure to conform and the anonymity of the internet, bullying has be transformed into a plague where not even the safety of one’s bedroom can help you escape from the torment of a bully. This new level of bullying has and can push people, young adults especially, to a breaking point. Some of the most horrific events to take place at a school, have been directly related to peer pressure and bullying.
As it was said before, not only were the staff members at Madera High School given a survey on bullying, harassment, and cyberbullying, but the students were given a survey as well. This survey was given to the students to know what is going on in their life in terms of them being bullied or not, how it has made them feel, what they have done when being in a situation like that, or if they really know the difference between bullying and online harassment. Students are not aware if they are harassing someone or not because mostly everyone calls people by meaningful names in which they think it is fine to call others considering the fact that it is taken as a joke, but others actually take it as an insult. When asked if the students knew the
This social issue has been in the spotlight for quite some time now and is the leading cause for students to miss school, become less social, cause self harm and even in some cases death. Bullying and harassment are commonly seen for the most part amongst teenagers who face issues at school, not only does this happen here in the United States, but in schools universally. ¨17% of American students report being bullied 2 to 3 times a month or more within a school semester¨ (Valerie). Although this is mostly seen among teens it can also happen between children and even adults. Bullying can occur everyday throughout Madera High School and no one would be able to acknowledge or stand up for the victim. Vice Principals at MHS have said that more
Madera High school in its past years have dealt with many cases of bullying and harassment among the students on the campus. A hand full of students from Madera High stated that people being harassed and picked on was something that was seen often on social media and up in personal. This became a major problem when social media such as Myspace were first made. This was the beginning of online harassment and bullying. Cyber bullying isn’t something that other people should just look past and ignore because people take their lives from it. People don’t notice what’s going on in the life of a victim that is bullied. Nowadays mostly all of Madera high school students have social media and physical bullying is more rare to see because most of the
not so aware of what happens when the teachers or an adult is not around. In the staff survey, when asked, Economics and Civics teacher, Mrs. Larsen, the question, “If you ever saw cyber harassment or cyber bullying taking place here at our school would you intervene?” she responded with, “ Yes! Always, again cyberbullying/harassment is hard to see/ know about.” Staffs from Madera High are not always aware of what students do before or after class, also students most of the time are too scared to tell a staff of what is occurring.
To say that here at Madera High is new to bullying and harassment would be like a fiction story it would be a lie not realistic this is starting to become a problem at Madera High. Many students claim to have been bullied or harassed at our school. This has become so much easier with the use of a wide variety of social media such as Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. These ways have created a whole different world of bullying and harassment which we call cyberbullying and cyber harassment both of these actions are becoming more and more often.. Bullying was common before, but the typical bully would physically confront whom their target was, Yet with the creation of social media the typical way of bullying are over. Nowadays anybody can target
Bullying is bound to happen anywhere at any time but occurs mostly within school limits. Kathleen Winkler defines bulling in her book, Bullying, as “...any kind of ongoing physical or verbal mistreatment, done with the intent to harm, where there is an imbalance of power between bully and victim” (Winkler 14). Bullying has an extremely important impact on one’s everyday life and can affect their life negatively getting to the point where they can no longer take the blow. To try and prevent bullying from taking place in schools, one needs to know how bullying effects a person, what the role of each person involved in the situation is, and have knowledge of specific methods on how to prevent it. Bullying in schools is a serious problem and a handful of school do their part to prevent it; others, not as much, which means there is room for improvements.
Media attention has brought the issue of bullying to the forefront. America is suffering from a bullying epidemic. Bullying is a national issue that has cost many lives within the past few decades. More than 160,000 children refuse to attend school due to fears of falling victim to bullying. There are several types of bullying and they all have been the cause and effect of many lives. Bullying can go anywhere from a cyber-setting, verbal, and the one we all know the traditional physical bullying. Bullying is intimidating because there are so many different methods of bullying. Many victims cannot defend themselves and do not believe reporting bully actions will help them or keep them protected, because they worry about retaliation, shame or the reputation of “snitching”.
Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year and approximately 160,000 teens skip school every day because of bullying. However only 1 in 4 teachers believe that bullying is wrong, and only seven percent will actually intervene in the act. Bullying is a major problem in today's society, thousands of kids are bullied everyday! What would you do if a friend was getting bullied? If you couldn’t stand up for yourself what would you want others to do? Millions of kids are bullied all the time, some have a little friends while other don’t have any. The less amount of friends you have, the more likely you are to be bullied. School officials do not always know how to stop bullying. However, some schools out there are going all out in
More than 3 million students are bullied each year and over 14 percent of those students commit suicide (“Parent Alert: Websites that Encourage Kids to Behave and Not Harm Themselves”) . No state has ever passed a law about hazing or cyberbullying in all of history but do have some legislations against it (“ Facts about Bullying”). Bullying can affect everyone those who are bullied, those who bully, and those who witness bullying(“ Facts about Bullying”).Most people face Bullying issues through the years of adolescence (“ Facts about Bullying”).No state has ever passed a law about hazing or cyber bullying (“ Facts about Bullying”) . Although there are some people that believe bullying it is a natural part of growing up and is not that serious, this is an issue that is causing students to commit suicide and self-harm, skip school, and continue the cycle of bullying. These negative effects can be lessened
Bullying is a prevalent problem in our schools and communities and has a damaging impact on school climate and on student’s right
Bullying is an extensive problem, especially in middle school. Junior high is the most common grade that bullying occurs in. This not only hurts children, but it also hurts the school system. Depression, anxiety, and long-term mental illnesses are all viable effects of being tormented. Suicidal tendencies and self mutilation are more common in students who are bullied, rather than students who are not. “28% of students in 6-12th grade have experienced bullying”1 that may not seem like a lot, but harassment isn’t a one time thing. Odds are that that 28% gets tormented fairly often. As previously stated, this issue does not only affect students. The school system may also get backlash from bullying. It is thought that about 160,000 children miss school fearing against harassment and torment from fellow students2. That is -to say the least- shocking. School districts lose about $29 a day for each student absent3. So, not only does bullying affect students, it affects the school as well.
The following statistics break down the impact on bullying in our schools, “One in seven students in grades K-12 are either a bully or have been a victim of bullying, 160,000 kids stay home each day to escape bullying, about 80% of high school students have encountered being bullied in some way online, approximately 35% of teens have been threatened online, six out of ten teenagers say they witness bullying in school once a day, one out of every ten students who drop out of school does so because of repeated incidents of bullying, and in about 85% of bullying cases, there is no effort in implementing an intervention by the teacher or administration of the school.” (Bullying Facts and the Challenge to be Met, 2017). These statistics are frightening for children, parents, and educators across our
School bullying and bullying as a whole has become a growing concern. The need for more intervention is more recognized, as incidents of bullying and inappropriate acts towards others occur in places outside of the classroom. This literature takes a closer look at bullying in schools. Olwesus (2013) states “the field of bullying research is to some extent plagued by problems, disagreements, and unresolved issues” (p.752). Whether if anyone will agree on the root of bullying, the fact remains that bullying has to be examined at its very core to remedy the matter before it becomes a bigger concern. There is a dire need for intervention based programs to be set in place to address the fact the act of bullying has lasting effects on the bully and the victim. When intervention programs are put into place to address bullying, the act of bullying decreases due to the gained understanding of the effects.
