Despite the disappointments that goes on in one’s life, failure can become a success. Richard Wright and Vincent Van Gogh are two examples of rags to riches. Richard had to overcome many obstacles to get where he is at now. Vincent dealt with illnesses and rejection most of his life. The one thing that both of these men have in common is they started off with nothing but ended up with something.

Due to the harsh reality uncovered in this chapter, society is able to see how hard it is to become successful, whether it is as a franchisee or starting a company on your own. At a success seminar Dave Feamster took his employees to, a paralyzed but still upbeat and motivational Christopher Reeve’s said, “Since my accident, I’ve been realizing … that success means something quite different” (Schlosser 107). Reeve’s is referencing the millions he made in his 20’s and that there may be more to success than that. “’I see people who achieve these conventional goals, he says … ‘None of it matters” (Schlosser 107). This is such a powerful moment in the chapter, Schlosser is supposed to be attending a motivational seminar and yet readers walk away from it wondering, at what point success worth it is. If this man who was famous and beloved by America says he thinks he is irrelevant, what about us? In this chapter readers see that big companies measure their success in money and profits, but how should society measure it’s? The public education system might measure success in graduates or students that go on to college. But the great thing about this chapter is Christopher Reeve’s challenges the way you measure your success and leaves that up to the audience’s interpretation.

Throughout Harjos career, she has had many accomplishments not only as a poet, but as a person in general. She has had many hardships to overcome throughout her life, but those experiences are what have made her the poet she is today.

Many well known people have had to work hard to get where they are today. Walt Disney, Thomas Edison, Mary Kay, and so many more people have overcome adversity. Adversity might be one of the worst things at the moment, but it can push someone to a better situation later on in life. It might not always be easy, but it can be a good thing in the long run. We humans seem to grow and live off of inspirational stories and movies that may keep us going on in life. The struggles, the weaknesses, the hardships is what makes people more appreciative and then there are the inspirational endings that pushes people to do better. Halle Berry, a favorite actress of many whose dealt with depression and suicide attempts after her divorce in 1997 is now recognized as the best actress award winner, Famous actor Leonardo DiCaprio dealt with obsessive-compulsive disorder, Albert Einstein suffered from Dyslexia, Isaac Newton suffered from bipolar disorder, and the famous artist Michelangelo suffered from Autism. These famous and historical figures is what makes their purpose in the acting, science or arts industry

The push to keep training and maintaining the discipline of a Basketball player despite the initial rejection makes Michael Jordan iconic. He knew that the way to the top would not be easy, but he was determined to do all it takes to get there. This shows that no one who truly wants to make a mark should think that life is a bed of roses. There is something to overcome; there are disciplines to maintain if we want to get to great heights. We can overcome obstacles like a genius when we pattern our lives to do the things that geniuses do.

You may know him from his Lisa Simpson haircut or his mouth full of 24-karat gold teeth; he is the 19-year-old rapper that is taking the music industry by storm. In the past, two years his music has gained national recognition and appealed to all types of fan bases. He is a force not to be reckoned with and his name is Kodak Black. He is the self-proclaimed “Project-Baby” from South Florida that is giving rapper a run for their money. Jon Caramanica, from the New York Times, described Black as “an unlikely savior for a hip-hop industry that has lately been preoccupied with melodic-minded Drake clones. “His mom had an operation and didn’t have health insurance, and the bills are pretty rough.” (Bauer 94) But instead of fulfilling his dreams in journalism, “He was going to major in journalism.” (Bauer 94) he stayed home and supported his family. “He’s staying home to help support his mom and sisters.” (Bauer 94) How he overcame his struggle was working hard and getting accepted into a college. “Braverman finally was going to college with help from a town scholarship G.T. had set up. Combined with the money he and his mother had been saving, it was just enough.” (Bauer 177) Braverman had big difficult challenges in his life, but with hardwork and determination, he overcame his struggle.

His last decade possibly brought the diversity of his talents and depth of his character into sharper focus. While gradually losing much of his eyesight and hearing, he still managed to fiercely maintain his independence.

Every story of success incorporates a protagonist encountering obstacles on their way towards success, or even on after they have peaked. However, some obstacles, being more impactful than others have led successful people to complete and utter failure. The three characters have faced major career-ending downfalls after reaching fame. The three examples; Macbeth, OJ simpson, and Mel Gibson -one fictional, and two real life characters- all had major downfalls because of their ignorance, overconfidence, and their obsession with power and their position. Macbeth, OJ Simpson, and Mel Gibson were analyzed on the reasons and personality traits which led them all to their extremely tragic and significant downfall.

The most significant of them all was dealing with ALS. ALS is a painful disease that attacks the muscles. Due to this disease he was unable to do the things he loved (dancing) and eventually daily activities (we often take for granted). He loses the instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs). These include preparing meals, managing finances, going to work, and so on. He also lost his ability to do activities of daily living (ADLs), which include: eating, bathing, dressing, toileting, and being able to get in and out of a bed or chair (Steinberg, p. 554). A prime example of his lost of ADLs was when he could no longer wipe his bottom. Yet, another is when he talks about him needing assistance with his swim wear; as a result his privacy being lost. In addition to the complications that occur with the disease, the book also mentions signs of the primary aging process (gray hair). Regardless of his failing health he found happiness, joy and even humor in it all and until the end.
