1. This informative speech on “The Cause of Homelessness “is very Inform able and worth listening to, because in today’s economy it could be you or me. Some seem to think homelessness is choice. I find this speech relevant to the world I live in today, due to the high unemployment rate, declining job market, and the economic hardships that families are enduring. This topic is not a broad one, but yet can be spoke of in depth due to the fact I see many homeless people but never thought it would be me until I seen a family friend who has lost everything, this is what made me more aware that it is not just a choice and any day it could be me. Sojourner Truth delivered a speech that is commonly known as “Ain’t I a Woman?” in extemporaneous way at a women’s convention in 1851. Sojourner Truth delivered this speech after obtaining her freedom, which made her to be renowned as an anti-slavery speaker. Writing has been an outlet and a platform for people who have endured hardships and discrimination, leading Sojourner Truth to write a speech that later becomes an anthem in the anti-slavery movement. Her original speech was delivered on May 29, 1851, to the Women’s Convention in Akron, Ohio, where she reached out to fellow women and people of color rhetorically asking why she was discriminated against with hopes to rally the audience and bring change to the pressing issues in America. Specifically, through her arrangement readers, 150 years later are still moved because of how successful it was, much of which can be attributed to the strategies Truth used in arranging her speech.
During the Abolitionist Movement, many speakers stood before crowds to express messages of hope, inspiration, and change. Some of these speakers had years of experience in public speaking and communication. Others, particularly slaves speaking about their own experiences, were notably less eloquent. Despite this, they are often able to craft logically and emotionally persuasive messages. Sojourner Truth, perhaps without knowing, uses erotema, polysyndeton, dialogismus, and anthypophora in her speech “Ain’t I a Woman?” in order to instill passion in her audience while simultaneously advocating for both the rights of women and the rights of African Americans.
This passage stated by Sojourner Truth is very powerful in itself. The use of the metaphor and how she uses her voice presents a strong and confident argument. This passage got my attention because of how Truth interacts with her audience in order to keep her speech interactive and interesting. Then, Truth connects the audiences’ words to her own explanation that she is exhibiting. The metaphor also fascinated me quite a bit. Initially, it took me a while to understand it. Although, I eventually read it in parts and was able to understand the meaning, which I really appreciated. Truth states that her rights and respect as a person can be expressed like cup measurements. As a black woman, her respect was measured in a pint, while a white woman
