The lack of job growth can have a tremendous effect on any city. The problem with the city of El Paso is that they aren 't confident enough to believe that the city can handle big industries such as high- tech companies. The city is bringing in more and more retail jobs each year, along with call centers and other service sectors. El Paso has talent and that talent is leaving due to the lack of economic growth. Introduction Subject/Purpose: In this report I will be discussing the main reason why young, working- age people are choosing to leave the city of El Paso and what needs to be done in order to keep them here. One local problem that seems to be affecting the population of El Paso, TX is the lack of job growth. The city is known to be creating low- wage jobs which include call centers, and service sectors. El Paso is not creating any high- tech jobs, in which a lot of people get degrees in. According to an article, “El Paso ranks as the number one city that Americans ditch" (Hope, 2015). Texas is a very popular state where many Americans choose to live, but they are also choosing to leave the city of El Paso more than any other city in America. Experts think that the mass departure of people is because of El Paso’s slow job market. Better opportunities in other cities are pushing people out of the borderland. This report will go into detail about the following questions: How can bigger industries help improve the local economic climate, and what are the benefits? What can we do to attract high- tech companies into our city? Background/ Main points: High- tech jobs are one of the fastest growing industries, it directly creates millions of jobs. Giving the young- working people in our city a reason to stay and advance their career. There are many benefits that come with
As of April 2012, the state's unemployment rate is only at 6.5% (Wikipedia, Economy of Texas, 2013). Texas’s economy has went through the recession just like any other state but has started to rise out of the recession because of the land of oil industry that has hit its highest point since when I lasted lived in the state. The state of Texas I think is the busiest of many states because of its high demand of employment for the oil industry. The jobs are anywhere from secretary employment to a derrick man on the rig itself drilling the oil out of the ground. Every position has its own way of being very important. I miss living in this state because of how big the state is and the different areas of employment that is available. Texas does hit rock bottom but will always find a way out to rise above other states.
The loss of industries was one of the reasons for the decline of the city. Therefore, the city in conjunction with the federal government must work on serious strategies and tactics to bring back industries that were lost in the 1970s. This of course would mean giving out incentives to the corporations and certain tax reliefs and so forth. That initiative alone would solve the city’s major economic issues because it would provide jobs to low-skilled workers as well as the blue collar workers because that those are the groups that are
The Houston Area Survey shows how the city of Houston has progressed over the span of thirty-five years into an immensely diverse city that the rest of America will come to look like in the future. The city has grown from being predominately Anglo to having a nice population balance between Anglos, Latinos, African Americans, and Asians. In terms of Latinos in Houston, the study places emphasis on the differences between the first generation who are foreign-born, second generation who were born in the United States with immigrant parents, and third-generation Latinos who were born in America with American parents. The study explores the differences between the generations on their socioeconomic status including education levels and
War-related industry lured farmer, small-town residents and others into developing urban centers. Many workers were women, and many were other than Caucasian. Texas quickly became more urban than rural, with a net population growth of 33%,and the Great Depression became merely a memory.
America has been labeled by outsiders as “The Land of Milk and Honey” for many years. In a cynical twist of irony, Jurgis and his family became indulged in an American lifestyle that was anything but opportunistic. Almost immediately, they were faced with the challenge of finding new jobs and housing. In a city like Chicago, with booming enterprises and large-scale factories, as well as the increased use of assembly lines, finding a job would seem to be effortless. However, location was a key factor in determining the availability of jobs, as well as what type of work needed to be done.
The United States of America experienced a nearly one percent population growth rate in 2014 (Lafayette Parish, Louisiana). This growth rate is higher in comparison to Britain, France, and other first world countries. To many, this statement is not surprising. There is always an exaggerated news story about the increasing number of people immigrating to America and how it affects the country. Each woman in America is replacing herself and her spouse by giving birth to an average of nearly two babies in her lifetime (Louisiana). As America grows, more and more people migrate to cities because, generally, living in a city provides an easier life. Cities have plentiful jobs, more housing, and a multitude of places to shop and to eat. Cities also
When I arrived in Dallas, I was legitimately surprised to see that people in Texas were normal. They were not all wearing cowboy hats and boots with pistols tucked into their belts. I was ten years old, and I had just become accustomed to life in Missouri, right after leaving to Texas. Previously, I had moved from Albuquerque, New Mexico to Missouri when my dad’s job relocated us. Then, my dad quit his job and decided to pursue his dreams of owning a cattle ranch because his job had asked he relocate us to White Plains, New York. While his worst nightmare was being forced to live in a crowded, bustling urban municipality, mine included simply moving again.Visions of tumbleweed and desert haunted me the days following his announcement. This
Growing up in East Austin, one would be accustomed to seeing rundown neighborhoods inhabited mostly by African American and Hispanic working-class families. In the past few years though, the view has drastically changed. Now brightly colored two-story homes housing affluent Caucasian families occupy the once dilapidated areas. The previously desolated lots are now the future sites of lofts and condominiums. The recent changes in East Austin are a clear sign of gentrification. Gentrification is the extremely evident process of displacement. Revitalizing a derelict neighborhood favors the entire community, not just the ones with money. However, revitalization and gentrification
The Metropolitan area of Youngstown- Warren- Boardman has been a declining area over the last few decades, and hope is not near. The situation of this city is unbelievable, with poverty just seeping at the seams. The city is struggling with low education, job scarcity, and crime. People are fleeing in hopes of finding work, leaving the population to decrease. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Youngstown Ohio is the only city to lose more than two percent of its population in two years. People are scared, depressed, and finding dangerous ways to cope with the reality of the city they are living in. The Metropolitan area of Youngstown-Warren-Boardman is on a fast decline due to the impoverished living conditions these people face daily.
Cal says, “My late grandfather worked for the B & O Railroad for 50 years. He retired with a pension, a gold-plated watch and a lifetime train pass. Those days are long gone. People need to be ready to move to places in pursuit of opportunities that can bring economic and career growth. Earning more produces more in taxable income and more income means more tax money for federal and state treasuries. My wife and I have moved eight times (so far) and each move provided new opportunities, more experience and eventually higher incomes.” (Thompson). This anecdote is very important because it shatters the hopeful but unrealistic expectation some people have of the future of America and that it will ever be that way again. This is an effective use of personal experience because it shows what can be done if you simply adapt to
Kansas City, Missouri is located at the intersection of the Kansas and Missouri rivers. It is the biggest city in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area; the most crowded city in Missouri, the seventh biggest city in the Midwest, and the 39th most crowded city in America. Additionally, the location of the city makes it an ideal transportation hub and the most geo-focal market in the country, since three interstate highways serve it. Kansas City has a diverse economy including health care, telecommunications, legal services, manufacturing, governmental services, trade, and financial services. The locale gives access to more than a million employments in more than seven hundred occupations. Key employers in the region include the manufacturing sector taking up 10% of the employment opportunities, the services sector at 48% and the wholesale and retail sector at 14%. In the essay, I will analyze the Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) of Kansas City Missouri for the fiscal year ended April 30, 2015.
Michigan is the only state in the U.S. to experience an outflow of its population between 2000 and 2010, effectively reducing its labor force. Some might say that this is mostly due to the precarious economic and infrastructure conditions of the state, with cases such as the Flint water crisis. Others, however, point out the fact that most of Michigan’s labor force and recent graduates tend to move to warmer places to avoid the winter and the snow.
Living in the inner-city and suburban neighborhood can be challenging and beneficial for some individuals, especially for career opportunity. Many people who live in the urban communities have a better advantage in finding a job of their choice. Most corporations are located in the inner-city which makes it easier for people to find a job. Despite the job opportunities in the inner-city, many of these corporations do not provide parking for their employee which makes it difficult for many individuals. On the other hand, employment in the suburb is very limited and many of the professional jobs are
Imagine driving through a town where there is no car dealership, no furniture store, no grocery store, and nowhere to buy clothing, shoes, toys, or electronics. What seems so bleak and empty could be the future of many ordinary American towns. Online
Corporations are taking over the urban landscape. In previous years, many upper and middle class families fled to the suburbs to escape the everyday hustle of city life. However, in recent years, city living has become glamorized and thus the movement back into the city has increased. Once blighted inner-city neighborhoods are being taken over and revitalized by corporate leaders in hopes to redesign and yuppify these areas. As more money is put into the area, the higher the market value goes up and as a result, many local residents can no longer afford to live there. While these residents are pushed out, a more ‘desirable’ group of residents move in and thus, take over. This process, known as gentrification, is occurring in many cities all across the nation. In the past, displaced residents could possibly move to another area that was not undergoing this process. However, as we are seeing in Chicago, it is nearing impossibility to move to an area within the city that will not
